Dell today has unveiled its next generation of Inspiron laptops. The Inspiron 1420, Inspiron 1520 and Inspiron 1720 are all powered by Intel's new Santa Rosa platform while the Inspiron 1521 and Inspiron 1721 have AMD processors under the hood.

Dell Inspiron 1520 and 1521

The Dell Inspiron 1520 is a 15.4" widescreen notebook powered by the Intel Santa Rosa platform. The Inspiron 1520 replaces the popular Inspiron e1505 notebook. Gone from the 1520 are the white bumpers that the Inspiron e1505 had though. Dell is sprucing things up by giving buyers the choice between 8-different colors for the lid. Ruby Red, Midnight Blue and Jet Black are just a few examples of choices you'll get.

Dell Inspiron 1520 Specifications

Dell has all the drivers for the new line for XP64 Xp and Vista!

The only thing is that they are not selling XP64 or no os version

But they have the drivers.... so you can downgrade! NICE! Thanks Dell!

Are you serious?!?!?!?!

First off, price.
Second off, bad latencies
Third off, the mainboard is a 965... only P35 and X38 can support DDR3.

Notebook DDR3 isn't even being manufactured...

As for WUXGA, it is a really LARGE resolution for a 15.4" screen...and videos will just scale back to 1680x1050 and still look just about as good.

These laptops are nice. Dell even made the new little icon things when you customize your system... Now all they need to do is to release more coupons.

The only thing left is to wait for the coupon codes for the Inspiron Notebooks to be out.
The current $500 off coupons aren't applicable for the new Inspirons.

Some people have spoken with Dell over the phone and they say its actually GDDR3. Hopefully this will be cleared up in the next few days.

...because Dell's sales reps know what they're selling. *laugh* Anywho, I wish they'd bring 1920x1200 back to the 15.4" screens. I don't see why I would downgrade to anything less if I'm going to be carrying around something quite so heavy.

Haha, when I asked why it wasn't DDR3, I was referring to the 8600GT. Why is it only that the MBP and G1S use GDDR3? Everyone else with the 8600GT uses DDR2.

Sorry to say this but after playing abit with specs on the 1720 I don't see anything hot about the new Inspiron line .

For about 1500$ you'd get a Santa Rosa machine that is not much better then the one ( 9400 ) you could get for the same price a month ago .

In fact all the major improved features are very expensive and will bump the price well over 2000$ ( just add B-ray +700$ , Dual drives +300$ ).

A Dell at 2000$ ? I don't think so . Dell has fumbled again as it no longer offers better value for money , let alone any sense of style .

I dont know what you guys are talking about I just configured a Inspiron 1520

PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7100 (2MB cache/1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium Edition
SYSTEM COLOUR Spring Green Color with Microsatin Finish
LCD DISPLAY 15.4 inch UltraSharp ™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife™
INTEGRATED WEBCAM Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
MEMORY 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm
HARD DRIVE 120G 5400RPM SATA HDD
GRAPHICS CARD 256MB NVIDIA ®GeForce™8600M GT
OPTICAL DRIVE 8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability

With stock battery and wireless and 1 year warrenty for $1,439 Canadian.Thats a sick price for a 15.4" santa rose notebook with a 8600 GT, I have been looking at the ASUS F3SV-B1, that only has a 8600 GS and still costs $1779 Canadian. I refuse to buy HP due to past experiances so I dont know what they cost, but the only comparable notebooks (value wise) to this dell I have found are barbones systes like the asus C90s and the compal IF90.

Waaa, hurry up and release the 1420 over here!

EDIT: Just released in Australia! (Well, might just had had to wait for the cache to expire.)

Priced very reasonably. On par with the models its replacing.

Yea but that price is with the worst resolution, no 2ghz processor, and only 1 year warranty. That is a horrible deal

Yes, but the G1s was around 2K when people were preordering it if I remember correctly. I am sure you could find it for less calling around, but I know when I looked around at pre-release prices the cheapest advertised price I saw for the G1s was $1929 from Excalibur PC.

This is one of the things I like about Dell. Say what you want, but I am glad I don't have to count on ATI to produce drivers for my ATI X1400 when using Vista. Dell has plenty of faults. But having easy access to updated drivers isn't one of them. Type in service tag ID and all your drivers appear and ready to download.

I think this may be it for Dell for me.

I *really* do *not* like how the keyboard is off-center.

A laptop on your lap like this really sucks, because the laptop will be sticking off to the right, while risking falling off your left leg. No good for on the train or airplane.

I really don't like my hands being off to the left like that. My god, what a mess up.

Actually, that has the best screen possible. WXGA would be the worst at 1200x800, whereas WSXGA+ is 1680x1050, which is as good as many 17" laptops (and better than my WXGA+ 1440x900). Also keep in mind that this is Canadian money, not US.

well according to Dell chart nothing is obvious there.. and according to Wikipedia even the failure card called 8400G would use GDDR3 which is extremely false!

According to the Dell chart, the max memory bandwidth is equal to a reference memory clocked GDDR3 version of the 8600M GT. If it was DDR2, there is no way it can provide the same bandwidth as higher clocked GDDR3 memory.
