According to reports from Taiwan news website DigiTimes.com, Dell notebooks with AMD processors will start selling in the next couple of weeks. The price ranges for these notebooks are reported to be in the $449 - $499 range, meaning they will be low end machines and likely Dell will feature them in the budget Inspiron B130.

Initially Dell will target the low-end notebook market because that's where a lot of the potential holiday sales will be to borderline notebook buyers. However, by the end of December it is reported that Dell will start selling a 17-inch model notebook with an AMD processor. The 15.4-inch notebook is being manufactured by Quanta Computer while the 17-inch model will be made by Compal Electronics.

At the moment AMD makes up only 15% of the global market in terms of notebook CPUs, but with Dell now using AMD processors in notebooks it is expected to jump. Dell will use 20 million AMD processors during the first year of their partnership that stretches from the 4th quarter of 2006 to the 4th quarter of 2007. The initial shipment of AMD machines this November will be 500,000.

Since Dell is going to be selling these AMD notebooks in the $500 range and we know they're 15.4" type machines, it is highly likely the current Inspiron B130 will be used with the AMD processors.

But I thought Dell was going to release a mid-end AMD laptop (complete with ATI graphics) this month? Maybe they changed their plans?

I actually think this is a good strategy for Dell because the one area where AMD still outshines Intel is in comparing Sempron to Celeron. Most anybody would prefer a Sempron to a Celeron and would rather get a budget laptop with a Sempron than with a Celeron.

    hi all, new here.

the new AMD based notebook from dell will look like the E1505. they are calling it the E1501 and will have intergrated ATi based graphics, Xpress 1100/1150. i'm sales rep for dell and since it has already been announced/mentioned by other sites, i thought it'd be safe to say it. just to like you guys know.

processors dell will be using are the sempron, turion 64 and turion 64 X2.

the chassis will not have the media direct and the media keys in the front like the E1505. the chassis itself looks like a smokey gray color instead of silver.

no s-video or firewire and the built-in mediacard reader only reads SD/miniSD/MMC.

there will not be a ultrasharp option for the screen only truelife, so res will be stuck at 1200x800.

thats pretty much it for the differences from the E1505. i really want dell to make a AMD based E1405, like the compactness of it. or at least have 2 line ups for their notebooks, one AMD and the other Intel.

I want a cheap small, almost disposable laptop.

Someone step up and make a 12" and watch it fly off the shelves.

I just got a new E1505, but want something small to drag around town, and serve as as .mp3, DVD, streaming web media viewer...

E1205 FTW! Oh wait... there is no such thing... :(

i'm pretty sure dell will make a E1401 and E1701. but who knows, they might even make a E1201. all AMD based and with ATi Xpress 1150 intergrated graphics.

i'm sure most of us on here would like a sub-15" notebook with decent graphics and if dell makes a E1401 or E1201, a lot of us would buy one.

also, the E1501 should be on sale tomorrow or the day after.
