Not all affected owners -- only if you bought the defective notebook from Dell, HP or Apple. There were a whole lot more of them than that.
-
So are the GPU's they will be replacing these with be any less faulty than the original ones? Or does it just buy you maybe an extra 6 months?

To be honest I never expected a settlement to be reached and when I heard they were close I just dismissed it. Now it seems like they aren't offering anything anyway
-
It wasn't just 2008 Chaz. My Inspiron E1705 (geforce go 7900gs) from 2007 was also affected.
-
How come??!?
-- -
Is this a freaking joke?
They are offering:
a) refund what you paid for the repairs.... are you kidding me?! I knew this crap was defective and wasn't going to invest in actually repairing that junk (Dell XPS m1330).
b) Chip replacement???
Also, they expect the computer I bought in 2008 to be otherwise free of other damages.
I paid over $1000 for that laptop. And I get middle finger in return. Yay. -
Stupid. My 8600m GS just failed on me a week ago and it's a custom made Asus laptop (from Powernotebook). My three year warranty has passed so I'm screwed -_-
-
-
Yeah this settlement is sort of a jack really. I sent an email to Compal asking if they are going to find a way to jump on this settlement bandwagon since I have experienced the EXACT same problem with my NVIDIA card right after my 3 year warranty.
-
I opted out since the PC thats effected is now a CLI only server and having to send my server in for an undisclosed time is not acceptable to me.
-
This is one reason i opted not to buy NVIDIA products.. not untill they can make something that works and runs cool. Their screwing of customers outside of US makes me even more determined not to buy from them untill they make proper products.

Class action lawsuits are a joke when it comes to providing reparations to the effected class. The lawyers for the class make out like bandits as most legitimate class members realize their settlement is worth less money than it's worth to jump through all of the hoops to get it.
-
Just to add my own story --- I got an HP nw9440 mobile workstation in Dec 2006 that arrived with random black screens that I finally traced to an overheating nvidia Quadro FX 1500 gpu (as a number of others owners also experienced). I insisted on an RMA and got a replacement a month or so later which worked fine for a few years, and I didn't think much of it till I read about the nvidia problems. The notebook (which is otherwise great and which I was still using) now has a scrambled screen, I'm guessing due to a defective gpu again, but it's out of warranty...
Anyway, the bottom line is I strongly suspect there were also quadros that were affected, and I doubt the class action list is close to covering the real problems. Personally, I've used ATI/AMD gpu's since then. -
-
I'd only go with Intel or AMD graphics as well.
-
I should be the one who's angry. -
So, what exactly am I getting? A remnant of >$1k laptop that barely works? I already had that even before this.
-
The best part of this, is the approved settlement was 16 milion dollars from Nvidia, and the lawyers took 14 million of that for "fees". So 2 million to fix or replace all the bad Nvidia gpu's.

My old quadro fx 2500m in my old Precision m90 died the same death but was not covered by nvidias "waranty extension" or whatsoever.
This whole thing is a farce. There were much more GPUs in much more notebooks involved than they are saying... -
-
I went thru this a couple months ago with my G1S(8600M). WAY out of warranty. ASUS repaired it for free with another 8600m chip. It died within a week. Two months later i had a NIB g73 over-nighted at no cost to me. If you are affected and have a Asus computer there is a way to get a non-defective laptop. Consumer Affairs, Certified letter to Asus HQ, Many calls to support etc.

The settlement states 312+ million for repair and replacement
the 2 million set aside is for reimbursement for those who paid for repairs -
I submitted a claim for a Dell XPS M1330 last week. I bought it in January 2008 and, it died sometime in end of October or beginning of November last year. Ironically, I received a postcard about the litigation a week later.
I was wondering if anyone has submitted their claim and has heard anything back yet? I wonder how long it's going to take just for the notification process, because I know in my situation I'm going to have to send it in for repair. -
I've been wondering the same thing. I submitted my claim on January 14th for a Dell XPS M1530. Still haven't heard anything back.

niffcreature ex computer dyke
....so what exactly does chip replacement mean?
Are they reballing with better solder?
Thats, I mean, fine... they will be just as reliable as the newer series... -
Had a three year warranty and they changed the card once due to it fritzing. My warranty ran out in April last year and then the 'replacement' card wigged out a few months ago, I can still use the laptop but only using a stock MS driver in 1600x1200 16-bit colour and with hardware acceleration disabled.
Really stinks, especially as I paid 1900 pounds for it originally!
I have seen a few articles about temporarily fixing the cards by baking them in an oven, but I really don't feel confident about that.
Does anyone know if there's any class action equivalent that has been attempted against NVidia in other territories like the UK or EU as a whole?
Just to add insult to injury as a replacement two weeks ago I put in an order for a new Clevo based laptop which features, you guessed it, a second generation 'Sandy Bridge' i7 CPU and motherboard :-( -
My 9800M GT was one of those chips, its starting to fail on me and i have to underclock it in order for it to work properly in some games. My laptop is barely 2.5 years old.
Definitely ATi for me next time -
I was so happy to find out about the settlement and the prospect of finally having a working tablet PC. I thought, as was stated in the settlement, that they would either repair my computer, or replace it with another version of itself, in effect, a functional tablet/notebook hybrid.
My computer, the HPtx1000, was a $1300 top of the line model with all of the bells and whistles. Read the reviews, I did when I researched it for months before it was released and I bought it. HP Pavilion tx1000 Review - Tablets - CNET Reviews
At minimum, a similar kind and value would equal this:
TOUCHSCREEN TABLET!
1.8GHz dual processor!
2GB RAM!
150 GB hard drive!
DVD R/RW with live scribe!
Because of its faulty functionality, my computer has barely been used. Honestly this defective Tablet PC SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED! Then I would have at least had a refund of my $1300 or repair, but it was not. I should be getting an equivalent laptop/tablet or, at the very least, fix my computer so I can finally get what I worked so hard to pay for.
Why am I so upset? I am a college student. I saved for 2 years to buy this $1300 computer with the intention that it would be my primary computer. I upgraded options and paid extra for bluetooth, fingerprint reader, webcam, DVD drive/writer with lightscribe, and of course, most importantly the TABLET touch screen function so I could take written notes in class. I picked it out specifically because it was a TABLET AND a great entertainment PC, playing DVDs, online videos and such. And true, it was a tablet, but the entertainment aspect was nonfunctional because, as Ive come to learn, of a defective GPU.
I never suspected that HP or NVIDIA would sell a faulty product with such integral defects. I thought originally that the overheating , choppiness and failed video was because of too little free memory, so I did my laymans best to remove all extraneous programs and processes and free as much memory as possible. I even did 2 complete reinstalls of Windows but the computer still failed to perform. I blamed "bloatware", the poorly reviewed Windows Vista OS, and deteriorating HP quality for the inability to play videos, inability to get an attached an external monitor/projector to function, faulty wireless internet, and very HOT surface. I didnt think I got a defective product, I thought I just picked out a bad model. Disappointed, I limited my use of the expensive laptop now referred to as the hot paperweight-- to simple internet browsing and word processing. I have been using school computer labs, my iphone, and friends computers waiting to be able to afford a replacement. Which gets me to my point... a $300 Netbook is not an appropriate replacement. I could have afforded this ASUS or COMPAQ if that was what I wanted, but I use a TABLET. I need a TABLET/LAPTOP hybrid.
If the settlement is concerned about the cost of depreciation, I would argue that depreciation is only on the terms of advancing technology. $1300 today would buy me something more advanced than $1300 did in 2007. This is true, processors are faster, hard drives are bigger. After 3 years of use , albeit limited, I am not asking for a full refund. However, the replacements they are suggesting are of INFERIOR kind, value and technology. That is not a fair replacement as suggested by the settlement.
FAIR:
= Having my 3 year old tablet REPAIRED and the REFURBISHED with a properly functioning GPU.
= An equivalent replacement with be any of the nondefective HP tablets, refurbished or otherwise.
= Replacement with any brand Tablet/Notebook of equal processor, memory, hard drive and DVD R/RW.
LESS FAIR but ACCEPTABLE suggestions:
= Lenovo Ideapad Netbook tablet. Model: 06517HU $530 PROs: Tablet, similar processor (1.66Ghz) and storage (250 GB). CONs: Still not equivalent. No DVD R/RW and Less Memory (1GB RAM, but at least it's expandable to 2GB).
= Or HEY! Give us an iPAD for $400. It's a Tablet, and though clearly not equivalent to the fully functional laptop/tablet hybrid that I paid for, I doubt so many of us would be complaining about an iPAD. It doesnt have much storage, nor a DVD R/RW drive. But it can stream movies better than my defective HP tx1000 ever did, and I can still use the tablet to take notes in class.
UNFAIR, UNACCEPTABLE (the current offered replacements):
= Compaq Presario CQ56-115DX. $400 bottom of the line laptop. It has a comparable processor, memory, storage, and DVD R/RW, however it still is NOT a TABLET! Though I paid 3X more for my LEMON, I would be more than satisfied with this notebook technology replacement if it was also a TABLET PC.
= Asus EEE T101MT-EU37-BK. The ASUS is a $300 (bottom of the line) NETBOOK with a slower processor (1.6GHz), Less memory (1GB)! and NO DVD drive! This is portable yes, but it is NOT A TABLET! If I wanted just portability I would have saved $1000 and bought one in 2007. -
theres a UK forum on this with alot of posts..
i have a DELL Vostro 1400 and got my "claim accepted for repair" letter.
Now that i have researched the issue realize that there is no good way to make repair and Dell is BAMBOOZLING claimants with more defective parts as replacement.
Has anyone got the repair and what did they give you ? is it the same part number board?
People that dont know manufacturing dont realize that thos computers were 2 years old before came to USA and all that were MADE were made FOUR YEARS AGO and there will be NO NEW PARTS MADE to fix those units.
there were no alternates then and none exist now. ONE -OF-A-KIND all were purchased together years ago there will be no re-printing yesterdays news
therefore non-defective parts=NO SUCH ANIMAL.
If anyone knows of similar shaped perhaps INTEL boards or ones with ATI garphics that fit those chassis, please let me know ASAP.
IMHO ATI would not make fair replacement but might take it over another
NVIDIA gpu TOASTER.
We should be entitled to UPGRADE anyway...from LOSS OF USE and DAMAGES
in my case unit was boxed and stored for past 2 years UN-USEABLE. cheated of the CURRENT hardware its like we paid NEW price for 2 year OLD stuff. -
I a received a letter a couple days ago stating my claim was accepted and to be expecting a box to use to return my laptop to dell for repair. I got the box yesterday and it will be going out today. The repair center should be 1 business day trip since it's only 4hrs away, so I imagine the rest of the wait is the "repair process".

I bought my Vostro 1400 with 128MB nVidia GeForce 8400M GS Graphics Card in August 2007, and bought an extended warranty (expired in August 2010). Since Dell was extending warranties for affected machines for one year past the warranty expiration date, I dealt directly with them instead of filing a claim.
I received my Vostro back from Dell on Monday (March 7th) with the new motherboard/nvidia card, but didn't use it until Wednesday because the optical drive had been damaged during transit. So I waited for them to overnight a new optical drive to me.
Today is Saturday (March 12th), and I just experienced the graphics going crazy on this NEW motherboard/graphics card (strange patterns and missing pieces of the screen and web pages - not sure how to describe it). This seemed even worse than the intermittent strange graphics of the old card. This is the first occurence like this in these three days of use, and after a reboot, it hasn't happened again (yet).
I am not sure how to proceed - maybe I should file a regular claim at the NVidia settlement site, in addition to letting Dell know about this?
I'm interested in learning about how any of you might deal with this. Thanks. -

In November of 2010 I filled out the forms for the NVIDIA Settlement lawsuit. I have heard nothing since?
Shortly after buying my:
Compaq Presario F558US,
S/N: CN7204QKR
P/N : RZ340UA#ABA
The Wireless went out, I contact Compaq and they sent me a box to send the computer in for repair. I called them when I received the box they sent me and they said they no longer had the part so I had no remedy on having the product fixed. I since come across the website and filled all the forms out and waited, I still have not heard anything about this computer? I checked the site since and it said the claims period was over? What happened to my claim? I never received any further correspondence or information regarding the claim? Ive since come across many others who have heard nothing? What happened to our claims? Do we need to follow suit to have our claims heard? -

oh i remember this thread , yea my gpu died since my last post
-
I had an HP TX1000 that cost north of $1000 plus a service $350.00 contract. I used this unit for business. I sent it out 5 times for repair which each took two to three weeks for reapirs and transit to Chicago. This caused me to have to borrow a PC to stay in business while I travel and duplicate my back ups etc. OK so now finally there's a replacement on the horizon....a $400 laptop? Are you kidding? No card slot, don't think it has blue tooth
HP I hate you......which is unlucky for you since I happen to be the director of procurement of a fortune 500 company. Guess who's products will never enter any of our 5 million square feet of space in North America and I'm working on the international business.
HP abadoned their customers with a promise of a laptop of equal value. If that's the case they owe me four compaq PC replacements.
I can't wait to get together with my other procurement colleagues from other big companies. No slander just a simple truthful story how HP screwed their customers.
Shame on you HP. I think there should be a another class action for your breach of contract in saying we'd get a laptop of equal value.
Hey there's a thought...time call some lawyer friends. -

My Dell XPS 1530 has just died, during the warranty period it had the mother bd replaced and the RAM and now after about 3 years it has died again only this time the warranty is out. Sent to the Dell agent here in Sydney and they want $3,084 to replace the video card which probably means they replaced it last time with the faulty NVidia chip and now the claim period is out of time.
