Other day I was browsing the isles of local COMPUSA store for any interesting products and came accross this item. This is slim PCMCIA slot remote, like those famous DV1000 series remotes and sites in PCMCIA slot like that one. This one comes with a small( pretty small) wide angle receiver with very good range over 20' and works with any computer, laptop or desktop.

Somehow I did not find it online, so I included the image with SKU. Not bad at $34.99

It is really a interesting remote, very handy including mouse functions and configurable interface for several typical apps( can map keys to each application hot keys). This is not typical Ir-DA interface rather a HID USB device. So I am not sure how Girder or other remote control software works with this.

As picture shows on top it has 3 application buttons, 1 exit button and typical, player function buttons with mouse pad and two dedicated mouse buttons in the bottom. It works like presenter remote with good range and software can control typical power point functions.

One surprising thing is receivers wide angle, it was working even at 90 degrees, and ofcourse it would have been nice with angled usb plug(like those 270 degree twist USB sockets).

Usability is pretty good including mouse functions.
Now, there is no reason for other notebook owners( other than HP DV1000/DV4000) to feel left out. Remote fits nicely in PCMCIA slot and receiver is really tiny. Application is very basic, but it has very small foot print. But I think we should be able to configure applications as it is typical HID USB device.

I did not experiment much at this time, but will update if I find some thing interesting.

Pcitures explain pretty much everything, but ask me if you have any questions, I will try to answer if I know.

That's pretty neat! Too bad you can't stash the receiver somewhere in the computer, too. I know I'd lose it. Eh, I've got my HP remote in the dv4000 slot right now.

Yaa, it would have nice to stash it, but I do not see any more holes in my laptop to store it ! :)

Not bad when compared to those ugly big receivers dangling and remotes with the size more than your Power brick.

May be they could have made receiver to actually fit into remote it self.

That looks pretty cool, but I think the most appealing part of the DV1000/4000 remotes is that you can store them in the slot without carrying anything else. But still.. a useful little toy.
