Wouldn't backing up on your own external HD be easier faster and FREE?

    That's not the point.

This is online backup software -- it backs data up to "the cloud", away from your computer. Some people might reason it's safer to not keep all your data in one place (I am not arguing for or against that).

All drives are subject to failure, including external drives. That is where SOS's feature LiveProtectTM comes into play, which enables small businesses to back up data across multiple destinations at multiple times. By backing up data to six global data centers, there is no way that our customers will lose their data. Yeah, backing up your data to your external drive is faster and cheaper, but it is not reliable in case of crashed disks, accidental deletion, data corruption or viruses. It is just too risky.
