Clevo is up to their usual CeBit approach of quietly slipping out new notebooks. This year they have the Clevo 860TU 15.4" notebook on display that's capable of packing an Nvidia 8800 GTX graphics card and ready to support Intel's Montevina. One of our forum members, kaltmond, is at CeBIT and reported on the new notebooks announced by Clevo.

This is a possible Alienware Area-51 m15x killer - a 15.4-inch notebook with an Nvidia GeForce 8800M-GTX. It has a full HD 1080p widescreen display and a variety of ports, including HDMI and eSATA. It is most likely based on the Intel Montevina platform.

The Clevo M570TU is an update of the current M570RU (seen at CeBit 2007), adding HDMI and eSATA ports. It is a high-performance 17-inch gaming notebook. In North America, the Clevo M570RU is commonly known as the Sager NP5793; our review for the NP5793 can be found here.

The M570TU's most interesting feature is the new motherboard with support for the upcoming Nvidia GeForce 9800M-GTX.

The clevo 15incher looks to me to be a lot more sleeker than the m15x.

Very nice. Any chance of having this thread linked to in the Sager/Clevo forum; I would have missed it but for noticing the latest postings column on the left side of the page.

Well actually this isn't too much of a surprise to hear that the 9800gtx could be out soon for notebooks, especially for a company like Clevo. But think about it, the 9xxx series is nothing but a die shrink and engineering improvements over the 8xxx series which ushered in dx10. The die shrinking makes it much easier to fit powerful cards inside notebooks. The 9800gtx might not even be a whole lot faster over the 8800gtx but it will probably run cooler and maybe have gddr4 memory like ati has been using. The die shrink will allow for the added heat gddr4 memory provides.

Or as an alternative, maybe they will try making the 9800gtx 2 gpus on one card for notebooks. With notebooks selling more and more each year, it would make sense for nvidia to try to appease the hardcore gaming notebook buyers with a super 2 gpu card. But I think this is unlikely this time around. Maybe next generation we will see something like that but I doubt we will see it in the 9 series.

Mmmm Sweetness! Nice to see where the future of notebooks is headed. With the introduction of the 8800M GPUs and the future of the 9800Ms I can see the desktop market soon going the way of the dodo bird.

A couple of clarifications and confirmations:

    Clevo M570TU:
    - essentially same chassis as M570RU... but with HDMI and e-SATA
    - refreshed motherboard with new Montevina platform

    Clevo M860TU:
    - also using Montevina platform
    - like other Clevo gaming notebooks, its using MXM Type IV

    For both:
    - e-SATA and HDMI
    - still using MXM Type IV
    - 9800M GTX is still not fully confirmed (like last year when 8800M GTX was rumored to work in these units, now it came out), but MXM-IV will stay as Nvidia's forefront mobile platform for high-end videocards.
    - both will be announced and up for ordering as soon as Intel announces their new CPUs and chipset.

    New D901C:
    - will support desktop Penryn CPUs (including new quad-cores)... with BIOS update.

I think the AW and Sager will compete pretty evenly, because although at the moment AW and Sager notebooks are the same thing in different chassis and the sager is cheaper. Their 15.4" will likely not have Smartbay options, or things like stealthmode or BinaryGFX (it may have, but i doubt it). Meaning the sager could be very limited in battery life, and options for prolonging it, since we've seen people get 4 hours + on an m15x, and those few hours when you're on a prolonged flight or whatever, may just be a dealbreaker and make people pay the extra $100-200 for the AW.

Plus smartbay adds the option of having 400GB of HD (at 7200rpm, 640GB at 5400rpm) space at once, and even more if you buy the smartbay HD's. Which again the Clevo will lack, making the AW more desirable to people who travel often, and don't want to carry around some external hard drives (though smart bay ones are probably the same size, getting a 200gb 7200rpm or 320gb 5400rpm external hd is hard to get without having a power lead or having them eat atleast 2 usb ports)

yeah. I mean everyone has to applaude Alienware for such a great idea with the smartbay and the battery life. Too bad it costs an arm and a leg. I wonder what kind of firewire port the clevo has. Atleast the clevo has eSATA now, which means external hard drives are faster (for those who have it). The alienware still does have great stuff though so your right. Alienware is not out of the market unless Clevo copies every idea and puts it into a cheaper machine.

Pretty sure it won't be just $100-200 difference we're talking about between AW and the Clevo.

There is evidence to suggest the 9800m and 8800m are essentially the same chip. The 9800 might not be that big a bump up. I guess we shall soon see.

I'm waiting for the 25% decrease in size that Montevina is said to bring. I think that will be amazing for those seeking mobility solutions.

Now that these systems have come to light, how long do you think it will be unill Montevina and 9800M are released? I am looking to buy a new notebook now. If the technology is really going to be that much better, then I will wait. But I really need a new notebook soon, so I cant wait that long, certainly not November or December; 1 - 1.5 months, 2 months absolute max. So how big do you think the performance increase will be, and when will it be out?

Also, are there any current notebooks that will be upgradeable to Montevina or 9800M.

    AAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    *STARTS RIPPING OUT HIS HAIR*

    AAAAAGHHHHHH

I just bought my lapopt, gateway P-6831FX totally satisfied... after finally saying farewell to m15x... I get to see news on a new 15.4 8800M GTX laptop... which WAS PREDICTED TO NOT HAPPEN!!!!!!!!

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Anyways... if the price is under $2500 with 8800M GTX then I will be dissapointed in myself... for not waiting a tad longer... but I will just stick up with this laptop until we get over this evolution and balancing between laptop/desktop power... as in... laptops become more and more popular so the power will be increasing WAY faster... ill just wait and see... and strike another day :)

I think it will be pretty easy to sell a 6831. I too think the 15" is sweet.

But if the 9800m is a big step up from the 8800m I'll probably get that.

Don't bother waiting. Montevina's scheduled for release in or around June. It will take at least a month or two after that to start entering notebooks. As for the 9800M, it will probably take even longer.

That M860TU's pretty sweet looking. I wonder if it comes with that finish. Would be nice if it came with a numpad too, but I guess we'll just have to settle for the 9800M and Montevina in a 15.4.

Clevo uses their own proprietary adaptation of the MXM standard, which is why you usually have to buy a new motherboard in addition to the GPU if you want to upgrade. The only way to be sure that you will be able to put a different GPU into the notebook is to wait until it's advertised for the particular model, as appears to be the case with the M570TU. However, given that Clevo resellers in the past have advertised their notebooks as having "upgradeable graphics" when in fact a motherboard swap was also required, unfortunately it seems the safest way to go is to wait until the option can actually be ordered on a new system.

so im looking to get the np5793 with the 8700 and just upgrade to 8800 when its cheaper (or 9800 if it supports it)

from what i just read its not a good idea to wait for Clevo M570TU?
