As the name implies, Future System Solution's Casper 5.0 is a direct competitor to Norton Ghost, but is this data backup application a friendlier version of its rival, or just a pale imitation? We hunt for the truth in this review.

I bought Casper a couple of years ago when Acronis couldn't clone a dual boot Vista XP. FSS had already modified Casper to handle the different boot files that Vista uses. I still use it for disc cloning. The relatively limited functionality means there is less to go wrong.

Casper works fine with a HDD connected to my Dell E6400's eSATA port. This somewhat accelerates the cloning process. (The E6400 can also boot from an eSATA HDD which simplifies checking that the cloned HDD is OK).
