Samsung announced the company's new Samsung Series 9 and the Samsung Series 5 Ultra notebooks this week at CES. The Series 9 boasts a super-slim form factor and are available at half an inch thin and a lightweight, 2.5 pound design. The Series 5 Ultra are just that, Ultrabooks, with Intel Core i5 dual-core processors.

Wow. The new series 9 sounds fantastic. Not in the price range I'm willing to spend, but it sounds great on paper. I wonder how they tested battery life for the Series 9; either too good to be true or just a pre release marketing tactic. The Series 5 ultrabook also sounds promising. I'm looking forward to an ultrabook with an optical drive that is thinner than the diameter of a US nickel, which is 21.21mm/0.835in.

Now I wonder who's going to make the first ultrabook with a small footprint, ie 14" screen in 13" chassis.

If the 15ins display is nice with accurate colors and a color gamut 70% or higher, I think I found my next laptop.

Before the gamut comes into play, let's hope the contrast is decent.

That too, I can't go back to a display that has poor contrast/viewing angles. Heck, I don't think I can do glossy displays anymore either.

I took some time looking at the new screens in these Samsung notebooks at CES and then immediately went over to speak to some other notebook manufacturers and said, "You guys need to check out those screens in the new Samsung notebooks; THAT is what you need to be putting in your notebooks."

Why has it taken so long for laptop makers to figure out you CAN have a great-looking matte screen in a consumer notebook?

Is it better than the Samsung Series 7? The only thing that really stopped me from buying that was the screen.

Two thumbs up for the original designs. Nice to see "true" luxury notebooks making a comeback to the PC. As long as the 13.3" Ivy Bridge Series 9 is cheaper than the upcoming MBA, it's a must buy for me.

What about the battery in these Series 9 laptops? Can you replace them? The old series 9 you could not. I don't understand this. In my Dell, I 've had to replace the battery 2 times.
If the battery dies in the Series 9, what do you do? Loose the use of a $1500 laptop?

That would be terrible...I really do hope that you can replace the battery without having to ship it in.

I'm sure that the base is removable with a little care. I don't recall seeing any battery problems reported in the current Series 9 thread.

I'm a little confused by the naming, as the Series 5 moniker was associated with Chromebooks, but also with TVs. Samsung has the most confusing naming system in the business. The confusion will only get worse when Samsung brings the Series 4 and 6 business notebook to North America. Think Thinkpad. Then there's the huge and confusing series 3, the not quite upmarket series 7 and the not-quite in any series QX-something or other notebooks. Whew!

I get the fact that Samsung wants to get into the retail business rather than just being a component supplier to other OEMs, but the marketing side of the business has to catch up with engineering. Samsung is just throwing too many poorly defined products at consumers, too quickly, without any obvious or apparent planning.

The best example of poor planning I can think of is the 11.6" Samsung Series 3 that was offered through Staples for the initial asking price $700, but was finally sold out in a $250 clearance after trade-in. By all accounts, it was a very adequate notebook, if you upgraded the battery, upgraded the wireless card, upgraded to a SSD......you get my point.
