Announced at CES 2007 today, the Toshiba Portege R400 is a light-weight convertible notebook Tablet PC that offers two very innovative features. The R400 has a wireless docking solution and also includes the Windows Vista SideShow technology to give a heads up display of things like battery power, email inbox status and time and date. The R400 has a distinct white shiny finish as well, deviating from the usual black Toshiba uses. The R400 is powered by a low voltage Core Duo processor, runs Windows Vista and offers a case material made of magnesium and polycarbonate.

The wireless docking solution uses Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology that allows for wireless digital capabilities. Whenever the R400 comes in range of the dock (about 3-feet) the notebook and dock will connect and devices attached to the dock will be accessible to the R400.

The included SideShow display works even when the notebook is in standby mode to keep you up to date on the status of emails received, battery charge, time and available wireless networks.

For the full specs of the R400 follow this link. Pricing will be steep for the R400, it will start at about $2,600.

I like it! I like the location of the sideshow LCD, the wireless dock, the tablet convertible aspect.

It's got LED back lighting instead of the regular cathode tube so the screen is very evenly lit, kind of rare to find. There's a bunch of suttle nice features about the R400 that's causing it to be so expensive and it's really more targeted towards business folks.

Looks nice, but it seems a little chunky for a Portege, no? Esp. at this price range.
