I really wished that ASUS could do a little bit better on the pricing. At $3199 CDN + tax for the W2V, it's a bit too expensive... that's $1000 more than the Z83v

    Excellent comparison by the way!

Also, a WUXGA (1920x1200) option would have been nice. Currently only dell and sony do wuxga.

Nevertheless w2v is a beautiful machine indeed with awesome built quality it appears. Really tempting.

    Thanks for the review.

Nice review dude, pretty good shots.

    s1mon:
Well, the new notebooks by sager, falcon, area 51, voodoo pc, amost many others all have Wuxga's(optional). The ODM for these guys is Clevo. They have Geforce 7800go GTX in them. Look for my review of the sager 5720 soon. There are even a few 15.4" widescreens with WUXGA resolution. There are a lot more notebooks out there with WUXGA screens than dell and sony, which are ODM'ed I think by quanta, so look for those base models.

Nicely done, Coriolis! Since portability and heat are always on my mind in thinking about laptops, how does the W2v compare in those areas with the Z70va? Always best to learn from someone who has direct experience with both, to my way of thinking. ;) Have you ever tried the Sager NP-5320? That one is very intriquing, too, but I'm a big fan of carbon-fiber casings for the lighter weight and the Sager doesn't seem to have one yet.

Sager laptops are very rare here, I haven't seen one at all...

The heat wasn't bad, but I noticed that the fans were NEVER on, and the top left and right got warm.

Doesn't the W2V look like a Black Powerbook to you guy?
Coriolis, how were you able to compare and review both of these laptops? Do you work for Asus or something?

I must say that I am very impressed with Asus, their machines are so **** sexy!!!! ;)

He spends a lot of time at the CanadaSys store ;)

Anyways Coriolis dude, if you had to compare the z70va and the z83v, which one would you go for? Keep in mind they both got the same specs. I found out that it is possible for me to go for a 17" model, and the price difference between the two aren't that big.

    Hey.

I got to know Danny and Joseph at the location, and talking to people who know what I'm talking about and sometimes more then me is fun :D

Honestly speaking Sunny123, the 15.4" is too big for me, the V6v/W3v would of been my choices except they run way off my budget.

^ the 15" is different from the 15.4"? Is there a major difference in the screen size from V6V and z70va? I know one is wide screen but just wondering.
Is the V6V screen too tall? I mean if i took it to class for notetaking I hope i can see over it.. :)

The V6v doesn't have widescreen and has the same hinge as the W2v, so the screen lies further down. It's only 5~lbs, and very slim. The slow Optical drive doesn't bother me, neither does the heat. The price did though, $2800 after taxes..yeeouch!

Isn't the V6V MSRP $2199? Either the tax is crazy in Ontario...or you were stating a hyperbole :D

That was a few(3?) months ago, it was $2499+ taxes. The price drop was in mid-late Sept I believe...

While these notebooks are sweet, for a multimedia centre I would rather have one of those shuttle cube computers driving my stereo and LCD TV. For 3Gs I think that would be a better value although less portable!

    Sonething like this:

The fans were either not on, or that it was on at a low setting. Note that BF2 was on, and the sound as on as well. I was also listening to some RHCP :p

The Z83v got warm only at the bottom, the front(keyboard/touchpad) area was amazingly cool, even if it ran benchmarks and BF2 for a few hours.

What's the battery life like on the two models?

And with the W2v weighing in at 7.4lbs, dyou reckon it would be viable to carry around? (I'm currently split between getting a z70va and a W2v), I guess it's just the portability issue holding me back from a W2v

    Thanks

The W2V is a 17" screen, so portability won't be as good and battery life will suffer somewhat. The Z70Va will have a better battery life and be more portable (15.4").

You can get, based on prices at http://www.canadasys.com/laptopasus.htm , an equally speced Z70Va for a substantially better price. The only two reasons I can think of for getting the W2V over the Z70Va would be the larger screen (if you really want the 17") and (probably) a better warranty.

The W2v is very light, because the weight is evenly distrobuted.

The battery life isn't as good, as Devari mentioned, because larger LCDS = more power, etc.
