Even though it has a 15.1" screen, close to the standard 15.4" notebook screen, the Asus V6000V series is marketed as being thin-and-light. At 5.49 lbs the V6V fits the weight category of a thin-and-light. At 1.18-inches thick, it's certainly respectably thin too. So this notebook is mobile, but also powerful enough to run 3D games such as Half-Life 2 on a good sized screen. Read on to learn more about who Asus is and why the V6V is worth your consideration.

first thing that i thought would be a problem with this notebook when i saw the first pic and the specs was heat, and you confirmed that.
Although I have to say it looks sleek and thin

hey qwester. yes, it is certainly a sleek looking machine...the pictures probably don't do it justice. it is thin for all that you get inside too.

Wow....nice....now you're making me hesitate between this and a LM70. Is the screen comparable to your T43 (britness wise)...and nice accessories that comes with it....
as for warranty ...do you have to deal directly with retailler...I would hate to do that! -
amazing... full size notebooks about to break the 5lb. barrier.

Great review. It's always nice to read some unbiased, honest reviews [ ]
That V6V is undoubtedly a sexy machine...

The screen is not the glossy glare type that so many love, but it is still nice and bright and very easy for viewing.

hmm, i thought the crystal shine was the asus equivalent of Crystal View, XBrite etc. so does this mean the visibility outdoors is greatly reduced ala matte screen?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

That's right. "ColorShine" is ASUS's term for improved colour contrast and brightness... but is still matte. They don't have a term for their glossy screens.. they just call them "glare type". E.g. the ASUS W5a has a ColorShine glare type display...

Yeah, I wish these guys would come up with a universal term, like enhanced display or something so we all know what they're talking about. Everyone has their own term for crying out loud.

Hi there,
I just read the review for this....I'm a desktop user and am contemplating getting my first notebook. I'm torn between the Asus V6 and the Samsung X25.
Samsung do make great notebooks (and the screen is world class) plus it has bluetooth just like the Asus.
Needless to say, I'm veering towards the Samsung.
What would you recommend?
Thanks much. -
sorry sir, I have never seen or used the Samsung X25 so I can't offer any type of opinion between the two there.

I've actually never seen "Crystal Shine"... if you look on the ASUS website, you only see "Color Shine" [?]
EDIT: Oh nevermind... I see "Crystal Shine" now... the W5/W3 have Crystal Shine and Color Shine. The V6v only has Color Shine...

Hi,
I am considering this notebook. But the battery concerns me. In Australia, they use 4-cell battery (2400mAH). Is that the same as the one they use in V6800V? Ours are called V6000V by the way.

I've been trying to find out this as well and it looks like on 8 cell Tom's Hardware gave it only 2.40 min
http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20050119/sonoma_alviso-24.html
Same Andrew Baxter, (http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2311) gave it only approximately 3hrs on 8 cells.
Under 3hrs seems a little bit disappointing on 8 cell battery and I can't image what it would do on 4 cell - 1:30 min ?? For this price of the notebook and with this sort of battery life seems quite overpriced to me. Vaio FS has a similarly disappointing battery life, but it's way cheaper. I was really excited at first when I saw it, but now I'm giving it a serious thought.
I'd really like to see if somebody could post some more accurate times on these batteries. -
ASUS website here actually shows information that the v6000v battery life is up to 4.5 hours (can you believe it?)
I would assume that 4.5 hours is with 8 cell. Therefore with 4 cell, it would be around 2.25 hours. Not to mention they could be thinking of 8 cell + 4 cell = 4.5 hours. Meaning 8 cell by itself is 3 hours and 4 cell by itself is 1.5 hours.
Can anyone who possibly own this notebook, confirm which one?
Thank you in advance. -
Laptologic did a similar review and came out same: 2:40 min (8 cell)

ASUS L3800C, about to get V6800V -
Sadly, I can only agree with your cosmetic points regarding the V6V. Performance-wise, mine is a doorstop. It has been RMA'd twince sinece being purchased in April '05. It would crash/lock/freeze randomly, sometimes with Java apps, sometimes with Media Player, sometimes with Word, sometimes Acrobat. There does not seem to be any trigger I can identify. The motherboard and harddrive have both been replaced. After the replacement, I had to send the laptop back so they could reinstalled the WiFi card, which the tech missed. I also sent them a list of all the testing activities I did to identify the problem...still, after I got it back for the second time...it still freezes or crashes.
I have updated all drivers, BIOS, chipsets, etc. from both ASUS and the other makers (ATI, Intel)..no luck. I have installed a utility to montitor and adjust the graphics settings...no luck. The failures seem random. There are few options to adjust the BIOS in the menu (accessed via function key during the boot up).
ASUS Level 1 support needs work - the tech, when I could understand him, blamed me or my software, saying I had too much installed. In 20+ years working with computers, I have never been told that before....I do not have anything bizarre on the machine: Office, Acrobat, AdAware, SpyBot, Norton AV,...no games, etc. Level 2 was much better and took the machine back both times. Still, little comfort as I was without my laptop.
I cannot get a refund, as the vendor (GenTech in California) does not offer them. Yes, that was probably not the most intelligent choice, but I have never had a machine fail like this one...the only problem I have ever had in the past was a failed modem card in a Compaq (pre-HP).
I would like for ASUS to replace the entire machine with a new one, as I think this is a lemon. I cannot find too many other users to inquire aobut their experiences.
If that can't be done, I will persue a refund....but who knows. I would hope ASUS would want to have satisfied customers, but when you read the horror stories in their site's support forums from other ASUS product owners, it makes me wonder.
If anyone has any ideas of other fixes or contacts at ASUS outside support, email me. -
Bump/Question...???
Saw this model for sale BNIB/Sealed...so I searched...is this worth $1,300 Canadian
Thanks...!!!
