im sorry but bones information is not completely accurate. yes the opengl cards are much more effective for their class when it comes to yoru programs. be it firegl compaired to radeon, or quadro vs. geforce. however you will see a big difference between a 7950 and a 7700. the thing is the quadro and geforce cards are variations of the same basic card. for instance the dell precision m90 has the opengl version of 7900gtx in the xps. the precision is the work model at the same level as the xps 1710. however if u like the sagers, look around, often u can get the high end sager models with an upgrade to the quadro card. it will cost more, but thats because the business/opengl cards are more expensive in general. in general however with the power of the 7950 i doubt youll have any problem with your work, even though it isnt optimized for it. on the other hand if u wanto game, the quadro cards often have compatibility problems with several games.

Anyone know if they are going to release a customizable version of this becuase there are a couple things I would like to change, ie. the os, I want/need professional and I dont want to buy a copy of an os I wont use
-
Do you know anything about free upgrade to window vista?
-
@ Sylvain, that has beent he case usually, ASUS laptops especially have been quite expensive...not outragiously but more expensive...this is the first one i know of that is priced significantly low; at least for all the features this thing has

Asus is more expensive for a reason. Quality doesn't come cheap. There was just a discussion about that in the Asus forum. Too bad more people don't understand why similar notebooks cost more. But, its worth it. I wouldn't trade my V6j for anything (ok, maybe a V1 or V2, but only cause of the dock and modular bay), no other computers come close.

I still drool over the G1 though....at this point, by the time I can afford one, the G3/G4 will probably be released. Asus is hot. -
The fundamental question would be...why is the G1 so cheap compare to its bro and sis?

Here is a link to more info on how the vista upgrade will work. Go here
Skaterpdt if you want to customize the unit you would have to go to participating dealers that do customizations to the machine. To get XP Pro you would have to go with a XP Pro upgrade version. -
slight confusion I have here.
You said in the review that dvd dj is not supported but on your website it says dvd-dj.
can you please clarify? I mean is it not supported or is there and additional software available? -

It is a audio DJ, thank for pointing out this typo.
-
...meaning that it plays audio, but not DVDs...I think it's asus' play without having to turn on, correct me if im wrong.
Justin, does the gfx card have it's own cooler? if so, where is it positioned on the laptop?
Also, does the fan for the CPU take air in from the bottom or the side? likewies for the GPU -
Does ASUS G1 have TPM ?
I searched the Spec sheet for G1 in the ASUS homepage found nothing, this site claims that G1 has TPM... -

We have a G1 in house for demo purposes and i dont show TPM on the machine.
m477hew, with the limited viewing i see when opening up the compartments underneath i cant see the GPU. I am guessing it does not have a dedicated fan. There are a couple small vents on the bottom and the heat exhausts out the rear of the laptop. -
What woud be the difference between having or not express card slot?
can anyone tell me?..
Would be better to get an a8js or something similar for the express card?
By the way what is TPM? -
Agreed, what IS TMP? I remember hearing that it was hardware storage or some sort...what exactly does it do?

StarsBravo my opinion on the Express Card / PCMCIA is it would be better to have a PCMCIA. There are more PCMCIA compatible cards on the market at the present time then there is Express Card options. -
i agree but for now.. what about the next year?? ad further
-
@Justin
Just a quick Question:
Do you guys sell this laptop without an OS b/c I already have windows XP Pro CD so It's more reasonable for me to buy it.
P/s If you can't do so, can I upgrade the Os after ordering the ASUS ( Wipe Out All Information and proceed a new XP installation), does it affect the ASUS at all ?
Thanks for ur response -

StarsBravo sorry i didnt get to your post earlier. Companies are stating to make more of the express card options, i see in the next year there will be more options for the express card slot.
undeadman, We dont sell this system without a OS. Asus provides the system stock from the factory with MCE and that is what we and all other dealers provide it with. To get XP Pro you would need to get a XP Pro upgrade. You can also format your drive and install your own xp pro. The G1 comes with all drivers needed in case you wanted to do this or re-install MCE. -
I just purchased this model, partially based on this review, from NewEgg, $1799. I'm not so much a gamer as an aggressive business user, but who knows, with a rig like this I might have to become addicted to something!
I am going to dual boot Ubuntu on it, so I'll drop by and update folks who might be interested in that adventure. -
I got excited when I saw the title because I thought it would be another review of the G1S! But it turns out to be an ancient topic ..
Still, the older G1 is also an excellent machine, enjoy your purchase! -
false advertising here the hdtune with the hardware ran is 7200 rpm not 5200 so except lower hd tune scores with stock hitachi hdd on asus g1
