Intro
The ASUS G1 is one of two notebooks Asus recently introduced targeted for the
gaming community. Based on the latest Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile Technology the
ASUS G1 provides graphic solutions from nVidia with the 7700 512MB graphics card.
The G1 features a Direct Messenger instant display, side/front speakers, hotkey
highlights as well as sidelights. The LCD cover of the G1 comes equipped with
special in-mold decoration design that gives the notebook an instant game
machine identity that stands out from the generic notebook design The keyboard
of the G1 makes mobile gaming ergonomically comfortable while the W, A, S and D
keys are especially marked with color squares to match the rest of the notebook
color scheme.

Price:
The price for the G1 Gaming Notebook is $1799 USD. I consider the G1 a good buy
based on the features and accessories included with the machine.

Initial Impression
The laptop & accessories were packaged extremely well. The exterior is very
sharp in person. I was surprised by the highly reflective, glossy carbon fiber
like exterior (view LCD reflecting off of the wrist pad below). This carbon
fiber like design covers the back of the LCD and also on the interior around the
touchpad and keyboard. There is black anodized brushed aluminum accents on the
lower part of the wrist pad and around the touch pad that matches well with the
carbon fiber type design. Coming with a matching backpack & Logitech MX518 Mouse
it all looks very well together.
Asus also has miniature display (called Direct Messenger Display) between the
keyboard and LCD. Upon start up "ASUS" prominently shows in this display. This
display in combination with the included Direct Messenger Software provides
status for MS Outlook items, phone calls, clock & battery level. You can also
use this software to create your own personal messages that will show on this
display.

When viewing this laptop you can really appreciate the workmanship & design of
this laptop. The design is very sleek. I also liked the hinge design on this
machine. The LCD is sturdy and shows little flex. Pressing on the lid does not
exhibit any ripple on the screen. The horizontal viewing angles are great. The
vertical viewing angles allow some movement up and down and viewing remains
clear. There are 15 brightness levels, the lowest setting is dark but still
viewable. The screen is bright and I feel comfortable viewing at 8/15
brightness level.
On the G1 there is a green flashing indicator light on each side of the LCD
After reading of the initial specification & pictures from Asus, I was curious
on what the Flash Indicators were going to do. The green flashing indicator
lights blink when Microsoft Direct X 9/10 is running.
Keyboard & Mouse
The surface of the wrist pad feels very smooth and comfortable when typing.
There is very little flex in general with the keyboard. The ergonomic keyboard
makes mobile gaming comfortable while the W, A, S and D keys are especially
marked with green color squares.

Nice review! Superb pictures too. I was looking forward to a review of the G1. Did you get a chance to try out some games?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
The machine just came in on Monday and went straight into the review process
I was going to try to play some Halo and Fear on it tonight or the next. -
That's one pretty machine, I love the look. That Direct Messenger heads up display is quite innovative and I applaud Asus for doing something different. The battery life is surprisingly good too, 3+ hours when I would have guessed 1 - 2 hours to be what you'd get. And thank goodness they integrated DVI.
What's up with the Green colored W A S D keys?
Thanks for the review Justin! -
excellent review...I'm loving those battery life numbers! What were you running during those tests?
-
Needs some in-game performance tests but good machine overall. Hard drive didn't run as fast as I expected though, oh well still the best machine i've seen in awile.
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Thank you both for your kind words Those green keys sure stick out.
During the battery tests i was browsing the internet and doing miscellaneous file searching.
I wanted to upgrade the hard drive to a 7200RPM initially but wanted to run the #'s on a stock machine first. We are upgrading the system to a 100GB 7200RPM and will re-test and post a update in this thread. -
It looks like Asus got wise and ditched ExpressCard for PCMCIA!
-
Very thorough review! I was very happy to read the battery numbers as well. It is also nice that you put in some overclocking results. The G1 definitely seems like a great pacakge for a great price.
-
Question: those two knobs to the side of the hinges next to the LCD screen - are those adjustable so as to tighten/loosen LCD screen movements?
EDIT: The W A S D keys are green because this laptop is a gamer's laptop - so link gaming to those keys. Figure it out.
Additionally I was hoping that the review would be much more thorough but then again, this is a pretty new laptop and this review appears rushed. Things like keyboard feel, any flex at all in the build, heat, noise, resolution quality on the 15.4" screen, etc. would be highly appreciated. -

EDIT: As i continue to use this machine i will add some more details as squawks mentioned in his post -
Thanks for the great review Justin. A couple of questions:
- can you disable the lights that come on when you are playing?
- can you compare the viewing angles (vertical, especially) and brightness to the A8Js?
- The 'Pad Lock Indicator / G1 Trademark' thing serves any purpose? Is it a button, or just an indicator?
- How do you think the 'carbon fiber' imitation on the lid is going to handle aging? Do you think it will scratch easily?
I know the values from the thread on the Asus forum, but might make review more complete to include dimensions, weight with and without AC adaptor/cable.
Thanks. Very tempted to sell my A8Js here in Spain, and order one of these from the US, for the same money (or less) thanks to the exchange rate.
Regards,
Juan Miguel Venturello -
Great to see the first reports
Looking forward to seeing what difference a 7200rpm HDD makes also.
Thanks Justin -

Thanks for all your comments. I will be adding some more info to the review later on in the week.
As far as i have seen there is no way to turn off the lights or make any adjustments to them. Comapred the the A8JS the viewing angles are slightly better with the WSXGA display. The padlock indicator is just a indicator, it is not a button or serve as any other purpose. The carbon fiber like material feal like a automotive paint. It feals very smooth. I dont see any problems at this time of it chipping or general aging. -
That is an impressive system. Thanks for rushing the information out to us and giving us the review. It sure looks nice and has a beautiful blend of features. I was especially impressed by the battery life after hearing that it might be poor.
The Padlock indicator is just a badge?
Nice to see your overclocking results. Were you pushing it with 474/458?
Also, did you find the green lights to be distracting at all, say in a dark room?
This system is sure to sell very well. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Beautiful job Justin, it looks like you put a lot of effort into this.
The Asus G1P would have to be my favorite new notebook on the market. The design is quite attractive and I like the green (not usually a color found on a laptop with the exception of the status lights), especially on the WASD keys.
It's a great value too. If I was in the market for a notebook right now, this would be it without a doubt. -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Yes, the padlock is just a badge with a LED. I didnt find the lights to be distracting at all. I didnt seam i was pushing tthe GPU hat much at all. No additional fan noise was detected. According to notebookcheckthe card can go 450/500? I was at 474/458 which may allow more room.
Thanks Chaz , I also really like the machine.
Anyonelse OC a 7700? -
Why does it look so much like the F3J?
-
the battery life is quite nice, although it is an 8 cell. My W7j can't get that even at lowest brightness, wifi/bt off, doing absolutely nothing
-
I like the red light but in 15'4 G1, can that be change?
-
SWEET. Nice review. I was THIS CLOSE to buying an A8Js a month ago, except I saw this thing and got attracted. The A8Js was everything I was looking for, except it had poor viewing angles and weaker build. I wanted something sturdy to go along w/ a 7700go.
This is probably it for me. Newegg has it, but it's an additional $130 CA tax. Milestonepc also charges tax for CA. Waiting for Geared2play to ship that in... Hopefully, it's here soon.
Looking for a price a lil less than $1800 if possible... -
-
Thanks for the review. Im curious about the battery life, iv seen a wide range of values all over the place and im just wondering under what conditions the laptop was tested under.
-
-
-
I'm always surprised at how quickly he responds to emails. You get them back in like less than half an hour. I've never called him though.
-
If you dont think that describes me as well you havent been watching lol
Eddie gave me $100 off and free upgrade to 3 day shipping. Its always worth asking I say. -

I am starting school in january for video game art and 3d design and will be using 3dsmax and maya. I need a laptop for rendering objects in 3d and animating them as well as a laptop that i can use for gaming.
Do you think think the G1 would be okay for my needs at the moment?
I am also looking at the clevo/sager M570U w/7950 GTX, but the G1 seems like a great bang for the buck deal.
any help is greatly appreciated since I need the laptop before january.
-thanks -
if your doing 3d design wouldn't it be best to use a card such as the Nvidia Quadro? though depends how serious you are i guess, since you want to game as well then you might just go for the cards you have been looking at.
With the G1, is there any info on the soundcard/quality? -
Hi !
I´am from Germany!
Sorry for my english first!
On our Market the G1 is proffered with a screen 1280x800.
Why ? Is it right or a Mistake ?
That´s sucks !
I wonder myself about the Battery-Time.
The A8JS reached nearly 2,5 hours with a small Display ! The G1 with a bigger Display reached really over 3 hours ? -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=91655
i am just too confused on what to get right now.
The Asus G1p looks like a great alternative price-wise to the geforce and quadro powered systems that I spec'd out in the linked thread above^.
If the G1p can handle what I need it to(3d animation/game art and design plus the ability to play most new and modern games), then I would probably go with it for my notebook.
I just dont know what to do. -
A 7700 mobile video card just isn't going to give you the GPU power that you will need. Spend a little more if you are gearing to be a graphics professional. -
Now thats the answer I was looking for!!!
thanks hkarthik, looks like I will be going with either a xps 1710 or clevo M570U with 7950 GTX. The G1 sure looks purty tho. I wonder if asus will put out notebooks with higher end graphics cards than whats available in the G1/G2 now?
I love the asus design and build. -
Chrisbu2- About the battery time i bet it gets better the then a8js because the G1 has a 8 cell battery and the a8js only has a 6. 2 more cells = more power.
Oh and Justin a few questions. Is the backpack a pretty nice one? Does it feel cheaply made or is it nice? Would you use it to carry that nice of a notebook around in say if you were a collage student? And also why do you think that the g1 on stock settings preforms worse then the a8js on stock settings? You reported on the g1 in 3d mark 06 that it got 2389 stock and 2612 on your overclock. The a8js on stock settings according to here gets about 2668. Thats stock on the a8js and thats slightly better then your overclock. I would have thought that the g1 would do better then the a8js becuase it comes with a gig more ram and perhaps better cooling and i dont know better quality. But other then that basicly the 2 machines are identical. Any thoughts on why that may be? Or perhaps im just nit picking to much. Anywho great review. Ill probably end up getting the g1 even if it is a slight tad slower just cause its better quality. Thanks! -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Thanks again for all of your comments. I appreciate all of your feedback
Thanks wuzuprad for commenting on the battery. That is correct, the A8JS has a 6 Cell where the G1 comes with a 8 Cell. As far as the bag goes, the bag is pretty well made. I think it needs more padding. I am used to a Targus TSB312 that i have carried before and the Targus is a much better bag. The bag has allot of inside compartments for storing misc. items. Plus it matches the laptop. I think it would be fine for college use. I ran the 3D 06 only once so far, i will run it again to confirm the score. I couldnt say for sure as to why it is a little lower then the A8J.
I will do some more testing and update the thread. -

glasspusher:
a bit off topic here, is the performance difference between gaming video cards really that great when working with 3d applications such as max or maya?
higher end gaming video cards have more pixel/vertex shaders, wich don't really help you out that much in a 3d viewport..or am i wrong here? the real leap forward is provided by the quadro/firexGL series, wich improove performance by alowing the aplication to render more poligons...long story told short: in a vieport you need quantity, not quality. someone please correct me if i'm wrong.
for rendering you need a good CPU since that is the main resource the rendering process uses.
and finaly, tons of RAM for apps like zbrush...
so from my knowledge, the only place your going to see a performance boost when comparing the 7700 to the 7900gt is in games....if you want a real boost in 3d apps, go for a notebook equipped with nVidia quadro
just my 2 cents.
edit :
http://www.cooltechzone.com/Reviews/Video_Reviews/NVIDIA_Quadro_FX3400:_A_Quick_Look_200601302176/1/
take a look at those benchmarks(quadroFX vs 6800gs). they're desktop cards all right, but it should be about the same with notebook cards -
Hi bones...so let me get his straight. you are saying that as far as my 3d aps and animation programs I wont really see a difference between the 7700 and the 7950 GTX but I will see a vast difference in actual gameplay?
And are you also saying that the quadro FX 2500M is better for 3d animlike 3dsMax and maya then the 7950 GTX and that its worth it to pay the extra premium for the quadro because I will be using it for animation and game design school? -sorry to go off topic here, but I am trying to figure out what notebook I should get for the time being.
So basically the Asus G1 w/7700 512mb will do just as good as a Clevo M570U/Sager np5760 with a 7950 GTX as far as rendering and 3d animation programs go(both systems spec's exactly the same besides the video cards)?
If this is true maybe it would be better for me to save some money and get the Asus G1(as long as it can perform the 3D tasks and programs I need it to) now as I am just starting a 3 year animation program. Do you think the G1 would be okay for now? I figure I will probably upgrade again soon to a more capable workstation(w/ quadro) because technology changes and I will get more advanced durring my schooling a year or two down the road when I will need more power most likely.
Should I go for the cheaper G1 with 7700 now? or go for the quadro based system right away? I also take it that if I was going to spend the extra cash for the 7950 GTX over the 7700 that you think at that point I might as well throw down for the quadro?
Thanks for the help, and again sorry for going off topic.

Justin@XoticPC :
At what resolution did you perform those tests? Native?
I'm asking because The G1 has a better display than the A8js. If they both ran the tests at native screen resolutions it would be normal for you to obtain a weaker result...
A8Js has 1440 * 900 and the G1 has 1650 * 1050 (i think).
Just a thought... -
btotech has a list for 20 at 100 off at their forum.
Only discount I know of.
thats how I got my a8js the preorder list. -
Yep, btotech has a good offer. I'm thinking about ordering a G1 as well.
I wasn't sure what to get, A8Js or G1....after reading the reviews i think i'm gonna go for the G1. It's a bit heavier but it comes packed with a lot more accessories and from what i heard it has a better build quality. -
If you can deal with the larger size it seems to be a better deal.
Youre going to buy 1 gb ram anyway
Id want to play with the little lcd screen too.
they both seem to be primarily plastic but the g1 has a metal lcd lid. I think thats important. Better screen too. Its just a better deal -
It's beautiful, but I don't understand the pricing. Why is the V1j around $200 more when it comes with only 1GB of RAM to the G1's 2GB? The only other difference I can find is the ATI vs. Nvidia gpu and the fingerprint reader... what's the deal?
Edit: Oh, and the hot-swappable bay. -
Wow, I was heavily considering a z96j. The battery life on the G1 is pretty awesome though for such a high end notebook. I might have to reconsider a little bit more.
-
Shame there's no ExpressCard slot though, taht would make it a more beautiful machine.
I'm waiting for Dell to bring out something in a similar vein to this. I've found the Asus' over here seem to be priced even more out of proportion than in the US.
