If you're into traveling or a college student this will probably be something you'll be looking for.

6.5lb laptop vs. 2lb Eee PC

and think about where you'll be sitting. I remember at my campus, there are classrooms that have very small desks which only leaves me enough room for a piece of paper and maybe a book. An Eee PC would be perfect in this scenario. A larger 14.1" or 15.4" notebook.. um...

Yeah. My last class was a few days ago so I'm done with school. However I'm getting into the IT field. I'm going to sell my PDA since I really have no use for it.

But, I just got a brand new laptop around Thanksgiving. So I'm trying to justify whether or not I would need something like an EEE. I mean, it seems nice and everything, but I'm not so sure if a 7 inch screen will do justice. And granted, I can always get like an 8gb SD card for documents and stuff, and get a 2.5" hard drive for my music and pictures. But then it all falls back to what's more functional. If I get an EEE, I'm spending about 500 bucks for the EEE + the SD card and spare hard drive JUST to compete with what I already have in my 550 dollar package of a laptop. And, despite it not being as small as the EEE, it's still a great compromise between screen size/functionality vs ease of travel, too... hence why I'm not sure if it's a wise move to invest in the EEE or not.

One question I do have is about the hinge when it flips open. Does it flip open to a set position or is it adjustable to anywhere you want to put the screen, such as a laptop?

Great review, good forum read. Just spent the last hour pouring over everything. I mentioned this in a post in another thread but I think it bears repeating - part of the appeal in the unit to me is the included software suite - it has everything I ~would~ need but I would work it -

Typically I'd be running Firefox, OpenOffice, Pidgen, and possibly the music player as well. The space was a nonissue (I would have been fine with 2GB, I would WANT the custom Linux OS) because I'd keep everything on SD cards, my medium of choice.

Is this going to be able to handle that kind of multitasking? Or is the processor just not up to task? If its just a matter of sticking in an extra 512 MB of RAM then the 4G might be just what I need. If its an issue of the processor bottlenecking the system then I think I'd have to pass.

I'm a little nervous about jumping in too with all these rumors of higher res displays coming in the next hardware refresh. Still, I really like what I see overall.

The processor can handle that just fine. But OOo might start up a bit slow if you're mutitasking heavily. It's not the fastest program at any time.

That's relieving to know. I can deal with a bit of a sluggish startup as long as I can get my work done. I wouldn't anticipate pushing it to the max on a regular basis but it is something that I would like to be able to do.

I think the only thing it offers is compactness.
Its specification is just too low, celeron cpu, 4gb SDD, etc., which don't seem to worth over a hundred.
This is like a bigger version of a PDA.
    But, it has its market.

Although the EEE PC is obviously much bigger than a PDA, but I think it's worth more. This tiny PC can be connected to the external display, print your documents and joy of typing vs PDA's keyboard. Don't compare the EEE keyboard to the usual notebook one, but of course, EEE is a great machine in such small form factor with wow price tag.

I think the Asus EEE is great. I just ordered my 4G off of newegg and can't wait for it to get here. I think it's features and performance are great for it's price.

As for the haters, you have to have one to feel the magic, =)

    According to this link:
    http://eeepc.asus.com/global/news03042008.htm

Asus is going to launch the Eee 900 with 8.9" screen, resolution 10x7 in the summer.

Can you tell me exactly how much drive space is used upon first boot with the factory install?

EDIT: Also, how is the sound quality through a good pair of headphones? Is it comparable to any other typical PC?
