Asus and Intel has joined the growing list of manufacturers of mini-laptops (including their own ClassmatePC) with their EEE-line of notebooks (stands for easy to learn, easy to play, easy to work) and the first to arrive is the EEE 701. While all the specifications are not yet revealed, it's an attractive 7", 2-pound sub-laptop with a still unspecified intel-chipset.
EeePC 701 Specification:
- Display?7"
- CPU & Chipset: Intel mobile CPU & chipset
- OS: Linux/ Microsoft Windows XP compatible
- Communication: 10/100 Mbps Ethernet; 56K modem
- WLAN: WiFi 802.11b/g
- Graphic: Intel UMA
- Memory: 512MB, DDR2-400
- Storage: 4/ 8/ 16GB Flash
- Webcam: 300K pixel video camera
- Audio: Hi-Definition Audio CODEC; Built-in stereo speaker; Built-in microphone
- Battery Life: 3hrs (4 cells: 5200mAh, 2S2P)
- Dimension & Weight: 22.5 x 16.5 x 2.1~3.5cm, 0.89kg
The thing that really seperates this sub-laptop from the crowd is it's dual mode ability. While it runs a full OS (Like XP or linux) it also offers a stripped down "Easy mode", mainly for surfing and such.
Another extremly good edge is he price: It's said to start from $199, which put's it between the OLPC and the ClassmatePC pricewise, while still being able to run the full version of Windows XP.

Some discussion here (from post 8 onwards)
-
I refrenced them here in post 11
-
whoa if this really turns out to be $199 base then it would make a perfect gift for my little cousin or my dad, assuming it has gps capabilities
-
I wonder is the ram upgradeable.
-
that would be cool.
-
Squeeze a little more than 3 hours of the battery and I'll buy one ASAP.
-
Small article here on the battle for the developing world market

This is actually a little exciting. I would have to reevaluate my use of exclusively a laptop as I would consider an easily upgradeable desktop + one of these for those times I just have to take my computer somewhere. How can the HD be that small if a fresh Vista install fills 10gb? Edit: Didn't realize it said XP - but doesn't XP still take up more than 6 gigs?
~ Brett -
Depends on how much you install. but the official disk space requirements are 1,5GB, and I ran XP on a 6GB drive. You can stream line the OS if you want, in which cas it will take even less space.
-
-
This could also be used as a portable video player. Download them on your desktop, move them to a large flash drive (2+GB; 4 sounds best in terms of storage/price) and you've got yourself a really cheap PVP. It doesn't have enough battery life to replace an iPod, but considering PVPs rarely get more than 4 hours of life, this is awesome. Plus its about half the price!
-
And you get the ability to run a fully-fledged OS (XP or linux).
-
The $200 price is too good to be true, its of course going to be the most scaled down version, the version most want should be much more but I am really excited about this! Comes out in August right? Would be perfect for my younger brother, hell a lot of people! I hear a 10" version's coming out next year.
-
The other version is $300.
-
Cool! I could see myself getting one of these. I'm going to either get a UMPC, the Nokia Internet Tablet or the Palm Foleo. Something light that I can browse the internet, etc without having to take out my laptop (lots of wear and tear).
-
Yes, this seems to have most of the functionality of the UMPCs (only thing its missing is the touchscreen), and its like $500 cheaper than the *cheapest* UMPC on the market, $800 cheaper than the average UMPC price (and Asus' own R2h UMPC )
-
The minimum of 512MB Ram and 4gb SSD (cant really call it SSD it is more like a large compact flash disk I bet) is already very usable. With a large usb stick to keep data on it should run Linux nicely!
Any specilations on the CPU? Maybe a Pentium M. The Apple TV box has a Pentium M and the price is not far off. -
It's a celeron M... i hope it is not soldered..
I hope ppl mod this into 10inch lcd or such.. would be cool.. -
The old Pentium M Celeron M or the new Core 2 Duo Celeron M?
-
-
The AppleTV doesn't have any laptop features, hence its cheaper.
I hope this has a Celeron M instead of a Pentium M. It will keep the prices lower, the battery life higher, and should be just as good for basic tasks. -
Emm.. is the 512mb RAM integrated? Hence meaning no upgrades for us? I hope not... finger crossed... i m gonna get this on august or ASAP, for sure!
-
Are we even sure it will be available in Europe and the USA? Things like this are often not released in the richer countries so not to spoil profit margins that the higher end products produce.

Hmm 7" that keyboard is probably reallly small.
-
The case looks as big as a 11" book, only the screen is small. It has 2 boxes that look like speakers to me on each side of the screen and alot of space around the screen too.

Has a nice flash demo that shows the design but doesnt give any info. -

The McCaslin platform was designed specifically for this sort of use in UMPCs. -
an amazing machine, but..................
it is absolutely screaming out for a $399 version with an 8.9" widescreen capable of 1024x600.
1024 is a useful minimum screen width for browsing, and there is certainly room to fit a standard 8.9" screen in that chassis.
$399 for a version with an 8.9" screen an a 16GB flash drive would sell millions in the developed world, especially looking as good as it does! -
-
I think they can, but to cut the cost, it is sacrificed. I think we could mod it if you want to.
-
At this point, I really don't care what kind of processor it has or if the memory is upgradeable because at that price, I would likely still buy it anyway. A widescreen version would be nice, but as I said, at that price, I would still buy it. Just for the fact that it's so portable.
-
agreed. bump the sticker price and add an 8.9" screen and i'll be a happy bunny.
-
This thing is going to be mod crazy! I can't wait to get one!
-
hallelujah!

"available in 7" and 10" versions"
-
I'm actually willing to bet that the McCasley CPU and motherboard alone will cost about $150 or more, much less the rest of the computer. It just hit me that at $200, I can get a 4GB iPod nano, or I could get one of these, which has the same 4GB flash and a helluva lot more.... -
i'll take one of these.
-
sorry for the late post, but i believe that the cpu is a pentium m, dothan based at 900mhz (at least from what i've read.)
the 3 hour batterylife sounds a little underestemated. you should get more out of that thing (that nanobook ... uhhhhhhhhhh-gly....... gets 5 hours, has the same battery), yet a cpu that runs at 1.2ghz. just speculating
i sure hope that the 4gb flash drive is removable so i can throw in my own, whether it be CF or a 1.8inch drive.
can't wait! every day i search on ebay hoping i can find one that has leaked or something! -
The whole McCaslin platform probably doesn't cost any more than $100. -
A chance to buy Asus eee with a 8"+ screen would be heavenly... I think I'll sell my current one on ebay and get that if they do come out with that (crosses fingers)
