Asus didn't have a huge booth display at CES like some of the other players in the notebook space, but they did have an area to show off their new laptops to the press, following are some pictures and a run down of what Asus had for CES.

Asus also made an announcement with Intel and Sprint about the intention to release a larger screen Eee PC with WiMax, unfortunately there was no product to display for this as the actual release won't be until the end of 2008 or beginning of 2009 -- so plenty of time to wait on that one.

is it me or does the new F8 look a bit like the Sony SZ while the M51 looks like something HP would make (in terms of design). great pics!

How fast is the 9500 nVidia card in the VX2Sn?
Does anyone know if it outperforms the 8800?

It will certainly not outperform the 8800M, but it will probably outperform 8600M GS (at least).

I thought the F8p has been around since the holidays... Must just be a refresh for Penryn.

Hopefully Asus is taking care of the battery life issues that plagued the previous generation of laptops.

Upon first glance, I thought it read ATi 9500 and thought Asus was releasing a notebook with a vid card from 3 years ago :p

The G70 has... dual 8700M?! Come on, gimme the 8800M! GTS or GTX, I don't care..! I'm kinda tired of 8700M in SLi. The number pad is welcome, though.

Also, I'm not a big fan of the F8p... The screen bezel seems a bit too wide to me.

And I'm curious as to what the nVidia 9500's specs are. Is it better than my 8600M GT?

the mini lambo series is interesting...considering the highend cpus. i have never seen such power offered in a 12inch form factor...13inch yes but rarely in 12 inch.

Not that impressed with Asus. R50 looks kind of cool, but I'm sure its expensive. The design of the F8p looks darn similar to some of sonys notebooks. And I assume Asus will show off the new EEE PC prototype at Computex 2008.

Hmmm. Asus Has put the higher performing cards in the VX2 series earlier (go7700, 8600M GT). Maybe 9500 is a dieshrink of a highpowered G84 (like the 8700M GT).

What card is in the VX3? The sign next to the laptop says it has the PM965 chipset and that means dedicated.

I was wondering about the same. It seems this is a new Dell XPS M1210 type notebook. Maybe a GeForce 8400M GT?

In any event, Asus is trying to draw attention away from Acer Ferrari notebooks, so I'm sure they'll deliver some decent hardware.

lol, stuff here does look kinda nice to me :)

The F8p does look nice, and so do the others . . . although I'd also admit they have similar looks to that of other brands . . . -_-a

    The G70 hinges look a bit (?) small .. . Hope I'll hold the screen well . . .

It's not just you. I thought the same thing. :)

The screen looks like an HP, except the bottom isn't hooked and inset. And the rounded smooth silver palmrests look HP-like too. The black around the keyboard almost looks Gateway's variation of the border of HP's.

The F8p is not actually an F8p - its the U6S. You can clearly see this in the larger picture, where the wallpaper has a stylised "U6" logo. Plus, the F8p has a way different hinge design. I think they just put the wrong card next to the notebook.

As for the VX3, I think its based on the U6 platform, so I'd say an overclocked 8400M G or maybe an upgrade to the 8400M GS.

It does say "Blistering performance with more powerful graphics than any other 12.1" notebook" on the sign next to the VX3.

Yeah. The F8 is thicker, have different styling on the keyboard, different hinges, different screen, just plain different design.

Not impressed. Asus has not been producing designs I like at all recently. Thick bezels? Big ugly camera mounts ontop of my monitor? Thick? Blah. Where are the thin designs, better battery life and led backlit screens? How about they try to fix the currently battery issues before they bring out more notebooks...?

That could mean that its getting an 8400M GS or even just an OC'd 8400M G (VX Edition, like on the old VX1...), since as far as I know, the only 12" with dedicated graphics atm are the Asus F9S and U6S, both of which have the 8400G on stock clocks. Most of the 4lb machines with dedicated graphics are 13.3" notebooks, so yea. A pity that they won't be trying to outdo the LG P300, with its 8600M.... :p

But either way, hell yes for supercar laptops :D

Definitely, I'm noticing a lot of the newer Asus models having massively thick bezels as well - or at least ones thicker than they need to be. The G1 - oh god, like 1.5" of wasted space above the screen....and the other G models as well (the G2 and the new concept). The U3 and F9 have particularly way too thick bezels as well, and the U6 bezel isn't all that small either.

Asus needs to go back to the uber thin bezels like on the W3, and even the W7 to some extent.

I think the G1 was orignally a 15" standard aspect P4 laptop. Explains quite a bit, doesn't it? The G2 was just a big 17" wide laptop (i think it's based on the A7).

The only other 12" laptops I know with dedicated GPUs are LG's R200, Z1 and TX (HD2300/2400, X1350 and go7300/7400 respectivly).

No LED backlight coming soon? One of the few feature with all the positives and no negatives. I'm disappointed, it should be the standard by now. And more hybrid graphic solution would be nice too, especially in the G1 or any gaming series.

Em, nope. 15.4in model since it came out. For being a widescreen laptop though, it is overly square. I also think the G1 chassis is rather lacking in terms of cooling efficiency compared to other notebooks I handle, can't see it ever running a P4.

I meant the chassis, not the g1 model specifically. I could be wrong though, which is why I said "I think". It was something I read in a thread, but it was made by someone who's usually right. And I've seen worse laptops used for P4's. I have one at home, in fact.

never mind that though. The G1 is based upon the A6.

I had a theory that the g1 or a6 chassis was designed for 16 inch standard screens which never reached the market.

this is because the space is uneccessary its just a thick band of plastic.

They were designed to accept 15" standard and 15.4" widescreen. This is evidenced by a 15" models a few years ago that used the same chassis.

I really, really want to say that the G70 is the ugliest notebook I've ever seen.

Agreed. Definately a U6S Penryn Refresh rather than the F8P, the hinge design on the F8 is very different.

Nah, it's not that bad in comparison to HP's HDX or Dell's XPS M2010 Behemoths, of course those are larger machines. You probably have to see the G70 in person to give it more justice.

The HDX is pretty hot, in person or in pics. I like it. The M2010 isn't all that great, but it isn't ugly, and anyhow, I'd say its not a notebook. Nothing with an external keyboard should be considered a notebook.

And IMO, the G70 is worse than the G1, which is worse than the G2. I'm still searching for an uglier notebook than this. Even the red Dell XPS M1730 isn't quite this bad, and its HIDEOUS.
