Apple just threw a shot across the bow at Microsoft - while Windows 8.1 was a free upgrade to users who spent a fair amount on Windows 8, OS X Mavericks will be free to just about everyone.

This is a surprising change. I'm used to Apple charging about $30 for its annual OSX update. It was that way for Tiger --> Leopard --> Snow Leopard --> Lion --> Mountain Lion, and I've never found a Mac owner who blanched at $30 for the "latest and greatest" version of OSX. So I don't know why they'd drop the price if people weren't complaining.

Microsoft's pricing scheme has been to charge more every few years for the next version of Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8) but to offer service packs and x.1 verisions for free in the interim.

I wonder when Apple plans on implementing touch-input into OS X. They are an incredible influential company and while watching yesterday's keynote I noticed that they kept stressing "their customers." Our customers say, our customers want, our customers love what we do is the message I got. They seem to care about the customer's wants. Microsoft should take note.

Made me want one their products for sure, but I'm not ready to go out and buy anything. I will be testing out OS X Mavericks on my 13.3" Mid-2010 A1342 in the meantime.

disagrees with you. but the whole thing of it being free was a good move, and its a very good OS, have been testing it since DP2

if you watch the the start of the keynote, you are going to notice that it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

they are focusing on iPad for touch input and their notebooks will remain without it

Not to be a party pooper, but at least now with the free OS X, one criticism is gone which is that Microsoft supports its windows for at least a decade while you had to pay money to upgrade OS's as Apple doesn't support the OS prior to the 2 most current ones. We were at ML and Lion came before that, so it basically meant that Snow Leapord had no updates though I think it did get an update to remove a flash plugin for malware attack.

Did anyone also see that non-retina 15 inch Macs are gone as well? You have to get all the hardware updates right from the get go from Apple now and also probably buy a dvd drive if you ever need it. Contrary to popular belief, DVDs can still be used to install OS's (windows dual boot) and also valuable for watching movies if you don't always have a reliable connection or enough money to pay enough money to get a decent high speed connection.

It's all just rhetoric. There are plenty of Apple customers who love the MBP 17, but they cut the model without a replacement (both my parents have MBP 17s and they don't know what they're going to do when it's time to upgrade; they like big screens). There are plenty of Apple customers who find that the parallax effect of iOS 7 makes them physically nauseous (it prompts motion sickness in some), yet Apple didn't provide an option to disable it.

Saying that Apple is more interested in satisfying their customers than their competitors is just a case of "the grass is greener on the other side." Remember that Apple is also the company of " you're holding it wrong."

This is incorrect; there are a couple of tweaks in the accessibility settings that noticeably reduced the effects in 7.0 - 7.0.2; the recent update to 7.0.3 removes it entirely.

Fair enough, I didn't know about 7.0.3; and I'd heard that it was reduced but not eliminated in the other two updates.

What I want to know is how does one "Print Screen" on a Mac? I got stuck in this dilemma while trying to edit some pictures in Windows 7 on my Mac. The key is literally not present on the keyboard.

I find it far easier to hit prtsc or alt prtsc on a Windows keyboard, search and open paint, and finally paste edit and save my picture. I haven't bothered to look it up, maybe I'll do that later today.

So, command-shift-3 doesn't work? You can use the snipping tool.

I updated my Mom's 2008 aluminum MacBook 13 to 10.9 on launch day. It's definitely much more responsive and fluid compared to 10.7.

Good to know. I was thinking of installing it on my wife's 2008 MBP 15, but didn't know how the aging hardware would handle it.
