Although the announcement came as little surprise to anyone, Apple revealed the new iPad Pro at the Apple Special Event on September 9th. Professed to be "the biggest news in iPad since the iPad", the big news is that Apple made the iPad bigger and more powerful to better compete with the wide range of 13-inch Windows convertible tablet notebooks with detachable keyboards that have been widely available for years.

A 12-inch Surface Pro 3 i5 128GB is $999 and the Type Cover is an additional $129.99, but the stylus/pen is included, so the total is $1128.99.

A 12.9-inch iPad Pro 128GB is $949, the Apple Pencil is $99, and the Keyboard Cover is $169, so the total is $1217.

That gives the Microsoft device an $88.01 advantage. Of course, that assumes everyone will want the Apple Pencil, which is unlikely as it's a tool designed for artists, not people who want an iPad Pro to run Microsoft Office. And the larger screen on Apple's offering also gives some basis for the higher price.

Including the cost of the 128GB LTE iPad Pro in this comparison is immaterial because there is no LTE-enabled version of the Surface Pro 3 at any price.

Warning: NSFW language: A comic predicted Apple's iPad Pro keyboard three years ago

Also, "If you see a stylus, they blew it." -- Steve Jobs, April 8, 2010.

Also, "What's the difference between a Pencil and a stylus?" "$99."

Also, "You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going to be pleasing to the user." -- Tim Cook, April 2012, describing the Microsoft Surface's form factor.

Sorry. I just had to get all that out of my system.

Elation at crow-eating aside, both of the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro 3 seem really, really solid to me from a hardware perspective. It all comes down do whether accessing iOS apps or Windows desktop software is more helpful to the user, and that's going to depend a lot on the usage patterns and industry we're talking about; neither is the better choice for all users.
