Finally apple launches new macbooks!
http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html
What do u guys think abt the pricing and features? Features are great! -
White AND Black huh - pretty fancy.
Price is nice, but when you drill down...
512MB RAM (2x256MB is kind of bogus)
Wish it had a dedicated graphics card. -

Stylish notebook but looks a little 'fat' too me. Or am I wrong? The price isnt that bad I must say...
Charlie-Peru -
Aye, a dedicated graphic card would have rocked but I can understand why they did not include one. One concern has to be batterylife.
The amount of ram included in even the highest models seems a bit on the low side. Good thing you can easily customize them however. -
The black one is the highest option and is not on the cheaper models....
Come on student pricing... -
integrated graphics!

GJ Apple awsome notebook!
I just saw the MBP 15.4" it was amazing!!, awsome design, to me it did not feel cheap or would break in my hands, i felt comfortable with it. The keyboard was nice too, just a small space bar tho.
I also saw the 17" too but it was a heater.. everything on it was litterly hot... so it gots that old heat problem. THe 15.4" is now kool, it runs warm, not hot.
Can't wait to see the 13" one
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
The cheapest one should have come in black too, and of course integrated graphics was a bit of a let-down (though I understand the reasoning), but overall it looks like a great machine. Might just have to get one sometime later, will wait a while first though and we will see
-
Integrated graphics sucks.... I was thinking of getting one of these, but now I can only think about another 13.3... Vaio SZ.

I would hope you didn't take Apple's 2GB RAM, because that is WAY overpriced.
As for integrated graphics, the reasoning is obvious. This is the "consumer" notebook at a lower price, and most consumers don't need discreet graphics. That would push price & heat & weight up, and battery life down. If you need discreet graphics, the obvious answer is the Macbook Pro. -
Intergrated graphics is fine. who games on a 13.3 in i think its a good price. i might just pick one up.
-
This one is good. I'd rather have lower heat, lower weight, and a longer battery life than *attempt* to game on a 13-incher. Looking for a small workhorse that's stylish and doesn't break the bank. And since it's manufactured by Asustek, maybe the quality will be slightly better than the problem-prone MBPs...
cheers,
yass -
Right. Nice n' cool running, long battery life, glossy screen, fast ram. Nice little wireless cruiser if you ask me...in slick black too. Only gamers balk about graphics. No ill effects here.
-
I´m wondering now if MBP is worth 2K when major difference is dedicated GPU. Theres also a size issue, but generally why not pick a half priced model with the same processor, HD and memory?
(after all, I must come to US to buy it for normal price. In Central Europe, MBP is for 2,8K, would You believe it.) -
Dont upgrade the ram if you buy it or the HD you can buy the lower model and get ram and big hard drive off newegg for cheaper. One thing though this thing Weighs 5.2lbs on a 13.3 in notebook thats alot. thats alomost a lbs more than most laptops that size.
-
I disagree about there needing to be intel gfx for sixe.
it's true, they couldn't have ded. gfx. but what about an nvidia or ati onboard??
this would have been perfect.
i would have bought one with that.
it doesn't have to be GOOD nvidia/ati...but ANYTHING buy intel!!! -
Is 512mb of ram enough for multitaslking and whatnot given its a core duo
-
If you upgrade the white $1299 model to a 80Gb for $50 you have the same computer as the $1499 model, except for the color. Why the hell would anyone pay $150 for black paint?
-
no expresscard....
-
Is anybody selling compatible memory modules? I would love to get it with 2Gb, but Apple's price is a bit steep.
-
I thought this looked good but on second take. 2 usb ports, no express card. and 5.2 lbs. seems lacking rather have an asus w7
-
-
Still at over 5 pounds? And the case is made out of plastic? That's shameful.
The specs doesn't "wow" me really... -
I like the look of the MacBook. Black is a cool color.
Tim -
I think apple got it right on this one.. the price points are perfect:
Try customise MSI 1013 for same price (1000 euro at student discount) - you'll be hard pressed.
The MBP is now 1.8k euro at student discount with the choice of glossy or matte..
Integrated graphics and No express card may put some people off tho..however there must be some sort of differentiation between MBP and MB! -
Heck, a loaded D620 from Dell weighs the same -
Even though a lot of you are turned off by many of the things that you think should be included in this new Macbook, I think most people would find this to be a very attractive computer at a very attractive price. I think Apple is gonna sell a lot of these.
-
I must say I'm surprised. I had suspected Apple to try and rip people off again as they usually do. But prices for the two white models are pretty good.
The extra $150 for black paint is ridiculous though. I guess it helps me remember how much I hate Apple, in these times of doubt...
With these prices however, I may just get one (a white one obviously), get rid of that abomination called OS X and install ubuntu or smt. You can't expect dedicated graphics for that price, and the integrated graphics will improve battery life and reduce heat problems.
There's just one... well two things that really bother me:
1) Does using a Mac still make you look like a dumbass when you're running Linux on it, and
2) That keyboard looks... wrong
This or a Sony SZ1... hmm... -
I dont think its overpriced at all. The price point is very decent. I do think it is rather heavy and it actually surprises me. I mean apple always does their machines light. So im wondering if maybe the specs on the apple site are wrong or maybe with adapter. If its 4.5 lbs i might think about getting one. But at 5.2 you might as well get a 14.1 machine.
-
I agree, extra $$$ for the black model? That's just silly. If heat and batt life are not serious issues, I will get one of these. Screw the MBP.
Though the new HP nc6400 and IBM Z61t are also nice. Decisions -
could you please recommend on the heat issue? especially for the palm rest area?
thank you, -
I hope this fatboy is not going to whine like it's skinny brother(s).
-
http://www.apple.com/macbook/design.html
They used some weird type of keyboard to make it thinner. That's what I don't like about it.
I think heat will be less of an issue considering the absence of a dedicated GPU. Of course, we won't know until someone has actually worked on one. The SZ1 looks better, has a normal keyboard and dedicated graphics... But it's a bit pricier as well. -
I think some of you who are thinking about buying a Macbook might also find this laptop that was reviewed here yesterday, quite interesting:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2937&Review=LG+T1+Core+Duo+Notebook
Of course, it's a normal PC, not a Mac, but..
It's white AND black at the same time, it's packing more RAM, (although slower CPU), 14.1" (1440x900), comes with an integrated dvd burner, and still weighs a whole pound less than the Macbook, and is notably thinner.
Personally I'm torn between the two, but I'll probably go for the T1. At least it has two mouse buttons, eh. -
Aw man, why can't they release a black Macbook Pro?
Getting back on topic, I'm highly dissapointed by the specs of the Macbook. No dedicated graphics and 512 megs of RAM on the base model? Maybe I shouldn't expect too much because of its low pricetag, but still. There's no chance I'd get a Macbook now. -
and $500 more expensive.
You can price any kind of books that will be thinner, lighter, with better specs, but you always trade off on price. The question is, can you get a book with these specs for the same price. -

Nice new notebooks by Apple, but as much as they like to say you're getting the most bang for your bucks, you're really not. I've looked at the specs (integrated graphics? - hell no! ) and as much as I like Apple with their designs and all, they're overpriced and overhyped. Even with student discounts here in Canada in the university bookstore, it's still cost a lot.
Just look at the premium you have to pay for the black. I mean when you buy an iPod nano, you don't pay extra for the black version. My only guess on this move is to limit the demand. Apple probably thinks many people will buy more black than white models and they don't have enough black MacBooks to go around. Even still, any die hards who wants the MacBook will not wait until Apple brings down the price on the black version. I'd rather get the HP dv2000t, which comes in black standard, doesn't cost as much as the MacBook, and the specs are substantially superior.
This brings me to the issues of RAM and HD. Who the hell does 512MB RAM with 2x256MB? That's just annoying. The HD is also skimmed upon. They start with 60GB and the price for upgrades is a lot. Now I know you can upgrade it yourself, but if you're paying this much for a notebook, you'd expect it to be complete. While the black MacBook comes standard with 80GB, I expect it to be 100GB. But doing so, I guess, would cannibalize sales of the MacBook Pros.
Anyway, I just had to get that off my head. Sucks to be the guy who waited painfully long for the MacBook to come out, only to be disappointed by the actual product. -

It just depends on what you do. Which games do u run on your laptop? I found most people to don't run any games because it's so much trouble installing them and keeping up with the updates... My advice, buy a X360!
My other advice would be to buy Apple before Sony. Sony are over-priced, gives poor support and their build quality is so-so. This 13.3 Apple Core Duo rocks!! And Apple surprised me again with and agressive price.

I don't think the integrated graphics are an issue; look at what kind of computer this is - a Macintosh. Nobody buys them for gaming. On top of that, it's a 13.3" screen; much to small for any sort of graphical 3D games in my opinion.
The MB seems like a solid machine from the pictures, but I hope that gloss finish holds up for mobile use. Looks nice in the store, but after a few months . . . only time will tell. Hopefully it is more scratch-resistant than the nano. Mine is a disaster.

here's my question: what about vista?
wouldnt that be a reason to have dedicated graphics? i realize that it is a mac, but im assuming that alot of people would at least dual boot osx and xp. correct me if i'm wrong, and i might be, but directx 9 is needed for vista's aqua to run, and dedicated graphics dont cut it, right? -
The intel 915 and 950 chipset support vista and both support direct x9. you might not be able to use certain features but it will run fine.

comparing this to PC notebooks is a trifle irrelevant since this is a MAC and runs OSX. The only competition it has for OSX users is Macbook Pro. As someone else pointed out, if it were to have a bigger hard drive and discreet graphics, who would buy a MBP?
-
If I had to choose between apple and sony, I will definitely get apple.
Apple customer support is all over the country, all over the world.
I don't know a single country that actually have a customer support for sony. -
@SRD: thank you for correcting me.
@lukealexander: so maybe rather than a macbook, we all want a 13" black macbook pro. ok, maybe thats just me.
but actually this is actually all i want for a school laptop. i have my main computer for games, etc. i want something portable that is good at the basics. it has some style points which give it points for me. only bad thing is the weight. i would have liked to see it at around 4.5
