I would guess given the life cycle of products in the respective fields, is one factor as to why the iPhone was given priority? On top of Apple's very good reason :p Also Mac users will wait whereas with your mobile phone (cellphone yanks!), people are more fickle and are not waiting 4 months? Contract with iPhone network provider coming into play?

All conjecture and not-much-of-a-basis musings on my part :p

It is pretty sad. Leopard looks to hold a lot of promise for OS X users, and any delay is not welcomed, but often they are needed. See here for more discussion.

On another aspect of this story, Boot Camp on the current OS X expires September 30th. So if you are using Boot Camp on your Intel Mac, be prepared for it to stop working before the next OS X release.

Leopard delay jeopardizes Apple Boot Camp users

I'm sure that Apple will release a new version of Boot Camp for Tiger by that date. They certainly don't expect every Mac user using Boot Camp to upgrade to Leopard immediately just to get the next version of Boot Camp.
