The M17X is actually offering hardware superior to most other laptops right now. On the other hand, the MBP's hardware alone is rather run-of-the-mill. It's the other parts of the Mac pacakge that increases its value.

Plus very different target audiences. ;)

Hey guys quick questions for yall. Firstly, im looking to buy the M17x before university, which will start in September. In your oppinion when is the best time to buy? (Deals, cheaper, ect..). Also, I cna't decide between going 1Tb or SSD, Aswell as Dual Cards in SLI or Not, i dont think i can afford the best processor so if i went Dual cards and maybe not the best processor but the 2.0 Quad or 2.8 duo would i be at risk of bottlenecking?? Thanks so much!

For some reason, this made me think of the scene in Transformers when they find the location of the cube. ;)

    So......

    APM17x = Allspark?

    Heh

Seriously, from the looks now, it is a sexy beast. I know some frown upon the WXGA+ as an option, but many do not want 1920x1200 on a 17" screen.

State of the art cooling, CPU options, screen options, MXM 3.0b slots, 280M in SLI, hopefully Overclocking with Extreme chips, ports out the wazzo and all in a 17" form factor?

Toss in Dell's much farther reach industry wide and perhaps a REAL transferable warranty with not so out of this world pricing?

Common, I've chopped AW down where needed, but you can't hate on the APM17x.

Your rig, the Asus W90, is another one that deserves props for being first in class with the 4870's and all the while being one of the best values in gaming notebook history.

I haven't heard the official release date but you can pretty much plan on these being difficult to get a hold of for quite a while. If you want one by September you may want to start your hunt now.

As far as being upgradable, you can definitely hold off on the CPU because those will definitely drop in price, and I would assume you can also purchase a 2nd GPU as your budget allowed.

Thank god someone besides Apple figured out that people like all-aluminum notebooks! Now I wish Asus or someone would apply this principle to something smaller.

To those wondering how the binary GFX feature (which switches between dedicated and integrated graphics) will work when ATI cards are installed, I have some info for you.

When a user switches to battery power, they will be prompted to restart their machine to switch to integrated graphics. This is the only way to do it since you can't switch between Nvidia and ATI graphics on the fly. However, if the system houses Nvidia cards only, then the switch will be almost instantaneous.

    Cheers.

Pretty much matter of time then when they release the red M17x with 4870x2 DDR5 at news of this, glad I waited =). I WILL be really dissapointed if they only make the red color the only option for the ATI card version of the M17x, I'm really crossing my fingers my fingers they don't do that..

Aluminum should disipitate heat faster than the standard plastics used today in most laptops.
Just another reason to really want this laptop, I wonder what the temps for the SLI setups will actually be?

    Chaz i own a M860tu 9800m GT 2.4gig duel..

Do you think selling and upgrading to the M17x is a smart choice. if i can get the money right.

SC2 Diablo3 and MMOs over the next 2years of my laptops life. +sim3 4 lolz

This brings me to a strange choice.. CPU wize its prob realistic to say that my options in a M860tu and M17x will eventualy be the same over the extended life of both sistems (asuming i upgrade to a quadcore in the clevo)

GPU wize the m17x is clearly ahead but with a focus on Mainstream rather than Enthusist gaming (via Blizzard/valve not Crytek/GSC) I think ill be ok. This leaves one last element that Sets the M17x apart from other note books. This feature i beleave is the main atraction of the M17x even more so than the SLi options.. and that is the 9400m onboard switchable gfx.

Did you have any opotunitie to test or even gage this notebooks battery life. with a 9cell and 9400m onboard how did this 17inch manager unless it can reach upwards of 3hours + battery i will not be willing to look into this upgarde.

Looking forward to continued coverage of this notebook on notebookreview.com Alienwares switching from 8-32 international branches will hopfully fix the horible pricing of alienware products in the Australian Region. Potentialy making This a viable choice for many more gamers.

Looks like the Dell partnership is finaly playing off and im glad that the Build quality has improved. (m15x m17x 2008 models) where engineering catastrophes as soon as i held them in my own hands.

25-35% cheaper can still mean the machine is severely overpriced, even with coupons. I'm fully aware of coupons. ;)

There aren't any M1730s in the outlet right now, but some of those configurations I've seen are amazingly overpriced.

So, the outlet does provide a cheaper option, but definitely not a guarantee.

Edit: Just got an email from Dell advertising the M17X, looks like they're trying to kick this up a notch.

I would say no, unless the programs you run are exceeding the capabilities of your current notebook. I personally don't see the point of upgrading to another system that's based on the same platform (Montevina).
Well, what do you want to know?

You think they'd give you an answer on why the X9100 wasn't offered or at the very least will the 2 unlocked multipliers in the BIOS work for an X9100 or is it just for the Extreme CPU they sell with the machine, the QX9300?

I mean we'll eventually find out for ourselves but it'd be nice to know if it didn't work beforehand.

Agreed, IMO the QX9300 and the X9100 are the two most desireable processors given they are the only ones that can be overclocked via the bios.

@Chaz, just see if you can get them to send me a unit for testing. :D

If AW is finally joining the umbrella of Dell, including its warranties, does that mean that AW warranties will now be transferable? That will be a huge bonus for AW owners, as the current inability to transfer warranties affects the resale value of these machines.

I would have preferred some glamor shots of the laptop in the video; something to illustrate the sexiness of the laptop, not just features.

If Dell can move the build quality over to the latitudes and precisions, they have a killer line.

Oh, and I was suprised by Chaz's voice --- he sounds like a nice kid; I was expecting something like Jeffries on fresh prince of Bel Air :D

No, I mean glamor shots in the video itself. Right now, I find the video to have way too many close ups of the laptop to the exclusion of more longer shots illustrating the sexiness of the beast.

BTW, is that angled lid serving any functional purpose ? On a flat lid, the mi point is the most susceptible to pressure, it seems that by having an angled lid, that midpoint vulnerability is gone.
