    Eh, eh eh? Comments?

Acer mentioned to 'aquire' a company this year, could be them.

So we had the Dell to buy Acer thing and now Acer to buy Gateway...

Personally, the fall of Gateway would make my day. Gateway was always a constant source of trouble when I owned one of their machines.

Acer isn't necessarily the best built machine out there either though. It would be interesting to see what that merge will bring.

Yeah i agree with Blake, I think that Acer makes low quality computers. i personally had a experience with them. I don't know if it was just a faulty one or what but don't go to Acer for anything.

Though I do not have personal experience with Acer (thus I'm not going to comment), just the idea that GW couldn't make it on it's own is what makes me happy.

I don't see either of these as major companies. Is it just me, or does it seem in two years there will be only two companies left making laptops?

Probably not. HP and Dell aren't going anywhere, and GW has been dying a slow death for years...Acer and/or GW won't go much quicker. Sager, Clevo, etc are strong AFAIK. And I cannot wait until Asus notebooks start showing up in stores so I can check them out. Sony, as overpriced as *some* models are, is still a strong player and I like their higher-end notebooks.

Just a note to Night, Best Buy has the G1 in stores now ;).

I'm not surprised but I don't think Acer is that major of a company, and I certainly don't see how acquiring Gateway will help Acer in any way...what's the purpose of Acer acquiring Gateway other than a "Me too!" thing and showing they have financial power?

I wouldn't, for the life of me, try and plan a takeover with GW as my secret weapon. That screams wtf. :p

Night, you must really hate GW, haha.

But AFAIK, the G1 and the UMPC R2H are the only things offered right now. I'd like a little more sampling, and I'm looking forward to BB extending their lineup of Asus notebooks.

Long story short: I purchased a desktop from them, and it froze within 10 minutes of turning it on for the first time. Ended up being a faulty motherboard design (something that affected a lot of people), and it took them over 6 months to acknowledge the problem. They finally exchanged the darn PC after I informed them that my customer/technical case log (a rather long one at that) had an entry for 95% of the days in which I had turned that computer on. Everytime I turned it on there was a problem within the next 24 hours.

The replacement did not have that problem, but their horrible customer service (at the time at least) turned me off to them forever. Now, if suddenly GW were to completely change I might change my tune. But they were bad back then and I still hear about a lot of problems with Gateway from a few friends that have purchased their more recent PCs.

I only base my opinion on this from personal experience, and not just the horror stories that you'll find with every manufacturer.

And no, my old Gateway computer did not have Windows ME installed on it. That PC was back in the days of Windows 95 and 98.

Guess I got very lucky. My Gateway desktop is one of the most solid machines I've owned. Have had it for over a year and only one issue - resetting the cable for the DVD drive. And their customer support was great: friendly and responsive.

I'd say it's one of the few dometic computer companies that I'd hate to see disappear. My experience with Gateway has been much better than my Dell and HP experiences.

So let's see. Gateway becomes a subsidary of Acer, and Acer-Gateway becomes a subsidary of Dell. 3 companies merge into one?

Somehow I doubt the FTC would allow the merger(s). But I could be wrong. Acer-GW would probably happen, but Dell's purchasing A-G would probably be scrutinized.

I can see where your distaste comes from then. I've had similar experiences with Compaq. I have since bought from them, and everything was fine. There just happens to be lemons from every company, it just matters how the company deals with it. Luckily, all my customer service experiences have been civil at worst.

Acer has a good reputation in Europe. Most of my friends have Acers here - cheap and tough. The company definitely has expansion potential IMO.

    night, thats horrible...
However, I have had 4 Gateways: the original Gateway 2000 (with a 133MHz Pentium II and Windows 95), a Pentium III desktop with Win98, a cheap desktop with a 2GHz Celeron and XP, and a Circuit City laptop with a PenM and XP. I have since given the laptop away to a friend who needed it more than I did, and I think it still works fine. The G2000 has since been junked because its 12 years old, but the other two desktops work fine. Never had a problem with any of them, except that they get outdated.
I really would hate to see Gateway disappear...Good memories with their computers, using them non-stop for 12 years. Just replaced the newest Gateway with an iMac, but the GW is still here, primarily for sentimental reasons.

Acer would probably want to aquire GW as a quick way to get market share and pass Dell. I doubt they would change the branding or anything, but honestly, its a really easy way to get a big part of the American market.

Gateway doesn't make their laptops anyways they buy them and put their name on them and add memory and HD. But either does Dell or HP. They are OEM's and ODM's such as Compal, Quanta, Clevo & Aopen are ODM's and do make laptops for Dell, Hp, Acer and Gateway.

Acer came out of nowhere to now become the third leading PC manufacturer behind Hp & Dell.
