Acer introduces new TravelMate business notebooks

Acer today introduced two new TraveMate series business class notebooks, the 15.4-inch 6593 and the 14-inch 6493. Both are based on the latest Intel Centrino 2 platform with vPro technology. Other specifications include WXGA (1280x800) screen resolutions, Intel GMA X4500 integrated graphics, up to 4GB of DDR3-1066 RAM, Draft-N wireless, and Windows Vista Business.

A key feature of the new TravelMate notebooks is their Acer ezDock II/II+ commercial docking station compatibility. The ezDock is plug-and-play.

Both TravelMates are available now from Acer's authorized resellers; the 6593 goes for $1,499 with an Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 processor (2.53GHz/6MB L2/1066MHz FSB), and the 6493 $1,099 - $1,299 with a T8400 processor (2.26GHz/3MB L2/1066MHz FSB).

That first one really looks like a Compaq.

These appear to be a bit overpriced to me; $1,499 for the 6593 and its only merit is a faster-than-usual processor (T9500 2.53GHz)? Same for the 6493, $1,099-$1,299 and it doesn't even have that fast of a processor.

I find it odd that these are business class machines yet have only 1280x800 resolution displays. Anyone who has used Microsoft Office '07 on a screen with only 800 pixels of vertical space can vouch for me here . . . it's a terrible experience.
Also, I believe both laptops have glossy screens (CrystalBrite) and that's a no-no in an office environment . . .

They are not necessarily bad products, but if the price of the 6593 was reduced by $500 (making it $999) and the 6493 $300 (making it about $999 as well), then I think they would be better off.

WOW amazing specs and an X4500 how did that happen? They had a powerful processor, good HDD, and DDR3 ram what a way to mess it up

well its for business, you dont need 9800s in SLI to do business =) (although a switchable graphics option would be nice) How they REALLY screwed it up was the bad screen resolutions... the pretty awful prices....and well those things dont exactly look thin but thats just me

The majority of business users want a cool and quiet notebook with good battery life. They don't need 3D graphics acceleration. The X4500 meets those requirements very well and doesn't adversely affect performance in normal (ie no 3D graphics) use. It is unfortunate that almost all overall computer performance benchmarks include a 3D graphics component.

Getting a dedicated GPU is like getting a car with 140mph maximum speed when all you want is to drive around town.

    That view is somewhat disturbed

What if i do CAD and im looking at business notebooks with good 3D performance or a business person who does gaming on the go

where does Acer fit in this view? Most people i have seen on this site with a quadro notebook do gaming so i think acer did mess up this part. The rest of the notebook is fine.

At those prices I'm guessing they aren't targeting the US. A E6400 or T400 could be had much cheaper and are much better known brands in the US.

Exactly. You can build to order a Latitude E with better specs for the price of the Acer, which is still supposed to be a budget brand.
