    Semi random comment:

Acer and ASUS are probably 2 brands I'll never buy from. Not because of quality concerns, but because the model numbers are too much of an alphabet soup. Ever try browsing their website for a laptop that suits you? Good luck with that.

These netbooks look pretty nice imo. But they should really start with putting in 2 gigs of ram. The introduction of dual core cpu's is definitly i've been waiting for in the netbook market. I know one should have low expectations when buying a netbook, but if slow response is something that provokes you into throwing equipment against the wall, this innovation is surely more than welcome :d

I have two questions though. We all know sandy bridge is arround the corner which will give laptops a significant performance boost.
Now I'm wondering, is this shift to dual core cpu's in netbooks a similiar transition? Or is there something waaay bigger awaiting us in 2011? (I'm referring to netbook cpu's, but also to low voltage cpu's, since there hasn't been much improval in performance in the ulv segment, [reffering to the nihil performance difference in the m11x between an su4100 and an ulv i7)

Aside from that general netbook perfomance question, I would like to know if anyone has any experience with those acer keyboards. Not sure if you can even call them 'chicklet', they look very fragile and uncomfortable to me.

    2011 netbooks:
    • 32nm Cedar Trail platform
    • 1080p WIDI
    • Graphics twice as fast, able to play 1080p video
    • Graphics support DirectX 10.1
    • Support for LVDS, eDP, HDMI and DisplayPort
    • Blu-ray support
    • Twin display support
    • Ability to be fanless
    • Support's DDR3-1066 ram
    • Support for Windows, Android, other Linux OS's

ULV Sandy Bridge will of course be a cut down full power Sandy Bridge cpu, and will still be much faster.

Cedar trail does seem promising, especially the support for two ram slots. But do you think it will be a significant upgrade compared to these acer netbooks with the n550? I'm reffering to plain internet surfing, youtube watching and typing in word. Since these dual core atom's are not even in the Belgium market yet (with maybe one or two exceptions), I wouldn't expect cedar trail to be released any soon. Especially if intel decides to postphone the release so the netbook market doesn't slow down (which was the excuse with their previous postphoned release).

The future release of ulv SB makes chosing even more difficult, since current ulv's are still way more powerfull than atom's dual core cpus, and if SB ulv's will indeed be way more powerfull than current ulv cpu's, getting a 4-500€ netbook with an atom dual core gpu will indeed look pretty wastefull compared to getting a 600€ netbook with such a new ulv cpu. (In europe a 300 dollar netbook costs easily 100 euros more, eventhough 1€ = 1.4 dollars).
[edit: nvm about sb ulv, I just read intel won't release those till q2 of 2011]

Soz if this is a bit off topic, I just want to know if its really worth buying one of these acers (they sure look tempting).

If you're looking for something stronger than Atom but don't want to wait for SB ULVs there's also AMD's Bobcat due out in January.

Hm interesting, according to techreport: "We're talking about performance similar to, or better than, Intel's consumer ultra low-voltage processors, which are our current favorites for ultraportable laptops."

source: AMD aims for low-power computing with Bobcat - The Tech Report - Page 1

This seems too good be true, but would be awesome if so. Imagine similar performance like intel's ulv cpu's, in a 3-400€ netbook.

I guess my decision is made, eventhough these acer netbooks look pretty sweet and way more powerfull than current netbooks, it seems like its definitly worth waiting till 2011.

Totally agree. One reason Apple is doing so well which people tends to overlook is that they do NOT confuse their potential customers with silly model numbers that makes no sense whatsoever.

Acer and ASUS are already on tap for releasing Bobcat/Ontario based net/notebooks.

An Acer Ferrari One or a Lenovo Thinkpad x100e would be my choice.

That and they keep the equation balanced. Graphics are important to Apple as well as they should be to every OEM. A LOT of notebooks ship with these really nice and powerful i5's but don't have graphics that can keep up.

The GPU with Cedar Trail is probably a die shrunk, integrated GMA4500 core. That would make me reconsider a netbook, because I thing the GMA4500 is perfect for the Atom. X3150 was horrible just like it's bigger brother, the X3100.

Does anyone have any idea how the heat is on the Athlon Neos?

My last Toshiba with the K325 was HOT. Like Hot. But then that was sometime last year. Maybe the Neo's have slimmed down a bit and are a little cooler?

It depends on what you want to do . . . I find that integrated graphics are more than enough for everyday use. I agree that older integrated GPUs like the GMA 950 and GMA 500 were terrible -- I don't think they were even capable of running Aero (?) -- but the more modern GMA 4500MHD and especially the Intel HD are decent and can do just about everything except play games.

My HP ProBook is the first notebook I bought with integrated graphics and thus far I haven't had a problem. For graphical tasks, well, I have my other laptop for that.

The GMA 950 is capable of running Aero. I do agree that dedicated graphics aren't necessary a mandatory thing for most people.
