Acer today introduced the Aspire one, an entry into the netbook market. According to Acer it is "designed to deliver continuous Internet access no matter where you are", so long as you're in range of a wi-fi network that is.
The device measures 9.8 x 6.7 x 1.14 inches and weighs slightly over two pounds.
The Aspire one comes with the following specifications:
- 802.11b/g WiFi, possible 3G in the future
- Intel Atom Processor
- 8GB flash storage or 80GB HDD
- 8.9-inch 1024x600 LED-backlit CrystalBrite display
- Linpus Linux Lite or Windows XP Home OS
- Acer CrystalEye webcam
- 5-in-1 memory card reader
- 3 hours of battery life with 3-cell battery
- 6 hours of battery with optional 6-cell battery
The Aspire one will have pricing starting at US$379. It will be available in two initial colors, sapphire blue and seashell white. Later this year, Acer will introduce two new colors, golden brown and coral pink.

Deliver continous internet no matter where you are? How do they do this?
-
Looks very nice! Direct competitor to the Dell Mini.
-
-
Aww, not you guys too. Why must you call them netbooks? That name is soo stupid.
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
There are a number of names for devices like this - mini-notebooks, netbooks, MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices).
That said, I like the $379 price point, it is more along the lines of what we should be seeing. The ASUS Eee PC has just been blown out of proportion with the $550+ price points. -
That's true. I still chafe at the stupid name though.
The price is definitly where it should be. But I just realised that it has the same stupid touchpad as the HP 2133. -
This market is getting crowded...and that can only be good for us buyers!
-
And finally there's a sub-12 incher that has a decent right shift key!
-
Seems like a strong entry into the field, but the MSI Wind still gets the nod for integrated design and packaging. This Acer looks like the lid team and the base team were working in separate buildings.
-
-
Thats an awesome pricing, wonder if others will somehow try to match the price
-
And here is the official site:

More about Linux Linpus 9.4 Lite:
http://www.linpus.com/xampp/webmaster/Products/Linux9.4Lite.htm
So, specs I revealed last Friday are confirmed.
Expected prices in Europe:
299 EUR - Linux version
399 EUR - Win XP version with 1 GB memory and 80 GB hard disk
Launch:
In few weeks in Europe - June for sure (that's my info).
It should be the first Intel Atom based netbook. -
It is already listed in many german online shops.
The T-Online Shop lists the price as 399€ for the Linux version (8GB SSD 512MB Ram). All others dont list prices yet. They all list it to arrive in 5-7 weeks. -
at least it looks much nicer than the ASUS,which I disliked very much.
I think I will take the Dell or this one to play aorund with for a month or 2 althought the HP has the best keyboard and better look , its CPU is ?.
The ASUS build quality was unbeleivably bad(or cheap-looking) and I was shocked at that more than I should've been cause many guys here and other computer sites were raving about ASUS laptops such as W something or G something. But honestly, I thought I could not trust ASUS quality after played with it for a few munites at a shop, so it is good Acer and Dell are now entering into this market.
I know I can trust Acer and Dell since I have used both of them for a while.
I can't believe Laptop mags(PC soemthing and Laptopmag) rating ASUS F8SN so high and they sounded like raving or even worshipping for the brand when they reviewed the ASUS U6s. I can not undestand how any one could feel these ASUS as well built as any of Acer Aspires (not even comparing to better built TM series) if you ever see any of ASUS laptops and any of Acer laptops, so I do think I do trust myself not any review or user opinion.
Plus, this site and most of others are not really fans of Acer any way, I never see an Acer review(user review doesn't count) any where in major US site despite of its popularity.
Many sites have prejudice against Acer , like real mass production cheap laptops but in reality, Acers are really well made and very good performers in their respective price range.
I think people are scared of Acer and its business sense and so want to bash it. -

Choices choices! Coral Pink Aspire One or Pink/purple MSI wind... let the price war begin!
-
I dont see the point of the MSI Wind and Eee 1000. They have a bigger screen but the resolution is the same. I am young and have good eyes so the smaller size doesnt matter for me. Same resolution means the screen is the same size. I can fit the same amount of icons/windows on the screen.
The Eee 1000 has more harddisk/ssd space but the Acer One and Eee 901 are much more portable and cheaper.
I need to see the Acer in person. It can fit a harddisk, but I hope it is not a lot bigger then the Eee 901. -

Acer Aspire one officially can be preordered in Germany:
http://www.notebook.de/acer-aspire-one-g-810/
Available in 5-6 weeks.
399 EUR for basic Linux model is too much .
BUT, there are good news from Italy .
Acer Aspire One in Italy to 299 euros
-
It seems that 512mb will be soldered onto the mainboard and there will be one empty ram slot. That means a maximum upgrade to 1.5GB or ram. Not sure if the performance difference will be noticeable compared to a fully upgraded Eee 901 with 2gb.
I guess the speed of the SSD is more important. -
512 mb RAM insteas of 1gb is a bad ideea
-
Wow,if the price tag holds up and the Atom CPU lives up to the expectations, I expect this to be EEE Pcs terminator
-
-
I hope this gets released stateside at the prices and timeline they're predicting. I've been waiting for this laptop since pics and specs first surfaced. A decent keyboard, nice design, good specs, great price.
A lot of people seem to mind the touchpad but I think the small size of the touchpad is conducive to placing the hand in a position where the left click can be done with the thumb. Better to have a wonky touchpad than a wonky keyboard.
I'm curious how the configurations will be done. The 6 cell is a must have option for me... hope it doesn't make the price skyrocket... -

Some sites are predicting £299 for the Aspire One with 80GB/XP. If this is the case I fully intend to buy one I just hope they don't take too long with the Coral Pink version!
-
There are currently 3 models available:
Acer Aspire One A110L, with the 8GB SSD, 512MB Ram and Linux
Acer Aspire One A150L, with the 80GB Harddisk, 1GB Ram and Linux
Acer Aspire One A150X, with the 80GB Harddisk, 1GB Ram and Windows XP
The rest is like Chaz listed in the first post. All models are initially coming with the 3 cell (in Europe at least)
The prices in Germany are: A110L for 329€, A150L for 359€ and the A150X for 399€.
The price is really good. The Eee 900 (not 901) costs 399€ here. -
This actually looks really good, other than the fact that its Acer. That fact is probably the biggest turnoff in all of this.
-
i've read that acer is going to release these netbooks with wimax/3g later on. is it possible to upgrade them with this feature afterwards?
-
Acer ain't all that bad, it's #3 in laptop selling for a reason.
And I really hope this One puts the EEE PC back in it's original 2-300 price tag. -
-
Awesome. I just hope we can get a bigger battery, then it'll be PERFECT.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Why no black version?

hey anyone know where you can buy this in the US when its released? Do you buy it direct from the manufacturer website? Thanks! Look forward to it! one month left.
-
Not sure where its gonna land in the US but prolly in popular US retailers like BB and online @ newegg and tiger given that Acer is releasing through NCIX in Canada.

It seems to be confirmed that the 8GB SSD version has an empty space where the hard disk should be. So you can put in a SATA harddisk yourself.
How much power does the SSD draw? If you have both a 5400rpm HD and the 8GB SSD does it use a lot more then the 5400rpm HD version alone?
I am thinking about using the SSD for the OS and get a cheap 5400rpm or even 4200rpm 60 or 80GB disk for data. That means the HD will be off most of the time. Does anybody have any info which disk uses the least power when idle? The 8GB SSD (linux) costs 30€ less then the 80GB (linux) version. For 30€ I can get a disk. So I think its better value for money to get it yourself. Just worried about the power usage. -
Is the 8GB SSD a single Drive or like EEE,
4GB + Whatever....?
