As the pile-on continues to release sub-notebooks with a $400 price tag Acer and Dell are the latest to join the scrum. The Acer Aspire One will come with an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, the first of the group to get this new chip from Intel.
Acer Aspire One
(view large image)Acer is thenumber oneseller of notebooks in Europe andthird in the world over all, so it was logical for them to jump into this game. The Aspire One mini notebook has been leaked on the web with pictures over the past couple of days but the specs have been short coming. A poster in our forums with inside knowledge has claimed the specs will be the following for the first available Aspire One model:
- Processor: Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz)
- Chipset: Intel 82945GMS + Intel 82801GBM
- OS: Highly modified Acer Linux (Acer smartfile manager, home page navigator)
- Memory: 512 MB
- Mass storage: 8 GB SSD
- Screen size: 8.9" Acer CrystalBrite (1024x600), LED backlight
- Wireless: 802.11b/g, Acer SignalUp technology
- Ports: 5-in-1 cardreader, SD slot, 3xUSB, VGA, RJ-45, headphone/lineout, microphone, Acer CrystalEye webcam
- Keyboard: 95% full size keyboard, touchpad with scroll zone
- Dimensions: 249 (w) x 170 (d) x 29 (h) mm, 2.17 lbs
- Power: 3 cell, 2200 mAh, 30 W AC adapter
The Price is expected to be 299 EUR (taxes included) which would convert to $450 with a simple currency exchange, take out taxes and assume a lower price in the U.S. (hey, it's just cheaper here) and you would guess about $400 state side. After about a month of time afterthe first releasea versionwith MicrosoftXP would be released that containsan 80 GB SATA hard disk and 1 GB memory. The price for that model would be expected as 399 EUR (taxes included) ($620).
The Aspire one would be the first Intel Atom based netbook, unless of course Dell can beat them to market with their offering...
Dell Mini Notebook
(view large image)Michael Dell was caught at a conference yesterday carrying around a prototype Dellmini notebook. Gizmodo was able to get the full scoop and Dell actually posted a follow-up on their blog. The information is scant on actual specs (as in none), but pictures are available and we know the price will be under $500, it will be about as wide as a regular pencil and have a red color option. Hopefully Dell doesn't go the route of the VIA processor but instead leans towards Intel like Acer has, we know from the HP Mini-Note that the VIA just doesn't cut it.

Damn! The Dell looks good!
-
God bless competition. the dell looks pretty decent for $500 notebook.
-
Saw the red Dell pics, this should be a nice EEE killer
-
I like the Acer, if you just can add more memory by yourself it would be great. It got LED screen, Atom and SSD, it can't draw much power!
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
I am getting the Dell, no matter what (in black of course )!
-
These two look really great. The Acer is definitely a better deal than the next EEE PC. I hope the Dell uses the Atom too, but the newest Isaiah VIA chip is no slouch.
-
I hope the picture for the Dell isn't the final design. If you look closely, the keyboard is lacking its Fx keys (F1, F2....F12). I cant decide whether this will affect the machines usability. otherwise a wonderful piece, I wouldn't regret parting my cash on this.

The dell mini book looks nice
-
I was just reading about the Dell mini inspiron at DailyTech, looks promising.

I can't wait for the MSI, Dell and Asus sub-notebooks to come out. I certainly hope Dell isn't going to push their sub-notebook with Vista. On their website they say "June 18 is last day to buy preinstalled Genuine Windows® XP from Dell" when configuring a new computer.

Maybe dell will continue to sell XP on its sub notebook. MS is practicably giving its old OS away, ref http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/145719/microsoft_to_limit_capabilities_of_cheap_laptops.html, which means that the people at dell will probably opt for a 'special' option to allow XP to be configured on its EEE slayer- the June 18th comment probably was referring to dells other laptops.
-
The Dell looks quite stunning. I didn't notice the lack of F-keys until Red_Eye mentioned it though.
-
I knew it, this was the year for ultraportables and subnotebooks, my favorites. We'll see many more come out as the year passes on.
I'm quite sure the Dell will also use Atom processors as the Acer is doing. I wonder if HP right now is really regretting making their deal with Via and will eventually put Atom in their Mini-Note.
The Mini-Note is so nice but its solely the cruddy Via C-7 processor that kills it for me. -
Screw the Atom, Dell, get the Isaiah...
But honestly, I like the Wind's design the most so far, because one thing that bugs me on the EEE is no cap/num lock lights... -
I certainly don't care for it. -
Brilliant. I love competition, especially in such an interesting area. It's the year of the subnotebook, and we're really seeing some excellent work. I think that Dell looks really great.
You know that Michael Dell didn't "accidentally" let people spot that Mini Inspiron (not a fan of the name). -
Look likes it's going to be a good old fashion battle royale in the subnotebook category this summer. I say... FIGHT TO THE DEATH!!!

Wow... I like how this competition is heating up.
-
Yay, I've been waiting on Dell's UMPC for quite some time =)
-
Is it just me or does the Dell look like an Altoid's tin box? I think that front silver lid trim gives it away.

+ rep for that. -
A lot of room between the keyboard and the edge of the notebook, but the giant bezel makes me guess that the notebook is rather wide and thus perhaps the keyboard will be full size.

yup that's my hope too! for now, we only know for sure that MSI Wind and Acer One, have Atom, LED and over 90% keyboards. Dell is yet to confirm all these 3 features... I hope
-

well the HP mini notes uses the C7 ulv but there is a upgraded C7M-ulv now which in benchmarks scores way better then the atom does So would be good to see that processor entered in the market.
-
acer is taking the wrong approach with customized its own linux... they should spend the effort on customize an existing distro...
hopefully dell will comes with a tweaked ubuntu...
for these low power machine, ppl should really take advantage of linux's efficiency... the xp edition is driving up the cost due to the need of the os license and additional memory...
for what u can do with these machines... os choices shouldn't matter... maybe they can customize windows ce or danger os to run on these things... let's get more use outta it instead of bogging it down with bloated os... -
-
The Acer and Dell are hot. Now we are talking.
Competition in this category is going to drive the price where it belongs <300. -
-
Can I preorder a mini-Inspiron now, lol?
-
Love the look of the Mini Inspiron, looks exactly like my Ruby Red 1520 except tiny. If it comes with an Atom, and XP or at least the facility to install it, I'll have one. The lack of the function keys would be annoying at times - I love AltF4, F5 etc - but not a dealbreaker for me.
My guess by pencil sizes is 9" screen - definately the size to go for. 800x480 just isn't enough for a real computer, but 1024x600 is, just, as long as you can go back to a real screen sometime! -

The Dell is absolutely lovely in terms of design, but I can never get on with their keyboards. I don't expect this to change things unfortunately, and the missing F-keys could be a killer for me. But what I really hope, nay pray for, is that this spurs Sony to produce something so incredibly special in the next Montevina TZ revision that it will create what will be my perfect laptop ultraportable. I know they are different price ranges entirely but these little guys from now not so little manufacturers with LED screens, potentially good battery life, light weight and decent warranties has to/soon will be infecting low end discounted TZ sales, especially with students. Hopefully Sony attempt to reassert the super-highend ultraportable market in light of these guys.
Gonna get either the Dell or the HP if they go Atom or VIA'a new chip for risky location travels and the new TZ for when I just wanna be a show-off SOB. -
The Acer model finally has what looks like a proper right shift key! That was my biggest beef with the EEE.

Why are Americans so biased towards Acer?
I don't claim anything. Those are facts...Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -

it looks as though by using the Fn key the number keys could act as F1-F6?
Just a guess on my part but it could be, and remember it's only a prototype!! XD -

i never said Vaio & Mac are "stupid" quality! they're in fact better quality, but don't expect a 499 laptop from them then -
I want them to create something higher end like the HP 2133, like with its 2.5" HDD, higher resolution display (1280x768 vs 1024x600 in EEE 900 and MSI Wind) and Expresscard Slot.
I would like them to create something like the TZ, but smaller, bring back the C1 Picturebook Sony. Their price may be high, but you know they'll give a great design, fantastic screen and long battery life. -

Engadet China seems to confirm all the specs listed:
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&langpair=zh-CN|en&u=http://chinese.engadget.com/2008/06/03/computex-2008-ACER-aspireone-preview/
There is also a harddisk version with 80gb (like the Wind and Eee 1000h) and also a optional 6cell battery.
If you look at the 2 pictures it looks like it has a card reader on both sides. Anybody know what that is? -
Looks to be SD only.
-
That is pretty cool. 8GB internal SSD is not to great compared to the Eee 900/901 but if you can pop in a cheap 8 or 16GB SDHC card and still have the other card reader available to be used as a normal card reader then it would be a great upgrade without any soldering like people did on the Eee 700/701.

Chinese Engadet insiders don't know some things... still...
1. 5-in-1 card reader
2. SD slot
