ASUS Eee is going to have new competition from Acer and Dell, too (HP and MSI already announced new products).

    Acer Aspire One

As some of you already know, Acer announced they’ll enter in so called netbook market, too. After ASUS’s huge success with Eee, competition started to increase. As Acer is the 1st seller of notebooks in Europe and 2nd or 3rd in the world, it was logical they’ll present Eee competitor.

Info you read is exclusive (don’t ask how), and Acer will (probably) reveal it next week in Computex 2008 in Taipei.

Acer’s netbook will have name Aspire One and will (probably) started to sell in mid of June. There will be several models. Colors will be white and Gemstone blue.

Specifications of the 1st available model:

    • Processor: Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz)
    • Chipset: Intel 82945GMS + Intel 82801GBM
    • OS: Highly modified Acer Linux (Acer smartfile manager, home page navigator)
    • Memory: 512 MB
    • Mass storage: 8 GB SSD
    • Screen size: 8.9" Acer CrystalBrite (1024x600), LED backlight
    • Wireless: 802.11b/g, Acer SignalUp technology
    • Ports: 5-in-1 cardreader, SD slot, 3xUSB, VGA, RJ-45, headphone/lineout, microphone, Acer CrystalEye webcam
    • Keyboard: 95% full size keyboard, touchpad with scroll zone
    • Dimensions: 249 (w) x 170 (d) x 29 (h) mm, 2.17 lbs
    • Power: 3 cell, 2200 mAh, 30 W AC adapter

Price is expected to be 299 EUR (VAT included). I don’t know for USA.

That would be the first one Intel Atom based netbook, build quality is expected to be better than from competition (we’ll see that), LED backlight screen, and very easy use of OS.

After month of release of basic model, the new one will come with Microsoft OS. That model will have 80 GB SATA hard disk, 1 GB memory and XP Home as OS. Price is expected to be 399 EUR (VAT included).

Those seem to be the two big minuses for the Acer One. 29mm is about 1.1 inches. That is a lot fatter then the EEE 900 and MSI Wind, they are both under 0.8 inches. The weight and other dimensions are good.

3 cell and 2200mAh are pretty small. Should give a run time of about 1 hour? Ultraportable which is portable but not usable while portable.

Probably because XP version will have hard disk and as I know hard disk need more space than SSD or maybe I'm wrong...

    It's done because:
    - Intel Atom CPU
    - SSD
    - LED backlight display

They use less power than Pentium M, hard disk and non LED display :). And how to make cheap product? ;)

    Peace. ;)

You might be right about all that. The Wind has a normal hard disk too and it looks like it is 19-31.5mm. I guess the size you reported for the Acer was the fattest part so its not that bad. The Wind also has a 3cell but I cant find the capacity for it.
