My wallet just imploded.
Still only WSXGA... What's going on with these huge monitors and ****py resolutions... -
The Acer 9800 is the first 20-inch screen notebook to hit the market, and quickly eclipses the new 19-inch screen notebooks that have just been introduced. The 9800 also features an HD-DVD drive. Availability is expected for May in Europe and is unknown for North America.
Below are the Specs for the Acer Aspire 9800:
- 20.1" CrystalBrite colour TFT LCD display (WSXGA+ resolution of 1680 x 1050)
- Intel Core Duo Processor
- NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 graphics card with up to 256MB dedicated video memory,
- DVI-D connectivity to provide faster and higher-quality images for high-definition entertainment on external monitors
- 3-Watt speakers and a 4-Watt subwoofer and Dolby Digital Live which allows the notebook to be hooked up via a single digital connection to a Dolby Digital-equipped audio/video receiver or digital speaker system,
- Acer Media keys, seven mirror-coated keys with LEDs: Acer Arcade, volume up/down, previous, next, play/pause and stop, offering convenient, one-button control over all your multimedia entertainment.
- Hard Drive storage of up to 240GB (with second HD)
- Choose between theslot-loading DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive or an HD-DVD drive
- 5-in-1 card reader that supports the most common card formats
- Integrated hybrid TV Tuner for both analog and digital broadcasts
- VoIP Bluetooth phone included
- Acer OrbiCam, a 1.3 megapixel camera mounted at the top of the LCD panel.
- WLAN (with Acer InviLink 802.11b/g Wi-Fi CERTIFIED solution, supporting Acer SignalUp wireless technology),
- Built-in Bluetooth 2.0 module
- LAN connection with Gigabit Ethernet cards and standard connectivity through the integrated 56K ITU V.92 modem.
Price isn't known exactly, but Stuff magazine reports that it will be about $2,600.
Obviously this is beyond being a "laptop", it's more like a TV replacement given the 20.1-inch screen size. The built-in TV tuner and HD-DVD drive that will eventually be available also suggests this is more entertainment center than laptop. The exact weight isn't known for the 9800, but you could expect it to weigh around 15-pounds or possibly more. It's a bit of a shame Acer did not include a higher end graphics card to make this a true gaming machine as well, but the nVidia 7600 graphics will be pretty decent nonetheless, and certainly better than integrated graphics, so you could have some fun with games.
No word on when or if this will be available in North America. My question is, if this is to be on display in stores anywhere, are they going to have to reinforce those shelves they usually display laptops on in retail stores?

That's a bargain... considering that a standalone HD-DVD player costs like what? more than $700?
Heck it includes a bluetooth phone! -
Cant wait to buy it.Such a great laptop.I hope its price will be acceptable, and Acer will make a lot of money with it

Nice system, looks good, massively dissapointing graphics card, horrible resolution, and it's overpriced. I wish I could get more excited, but I'm left here asking for more features. HD-DVD just isn't a selling point to me.
-
I can't believe they stuck only a 7600 into that beast, when you can get equivalent performance from an Asus W3j. I think with something that massive they might as well slap on a pair of wheels on one end, a telescoping handle on the other end, and make it a laptop that converts into a rolling suitcase.

And yea, you do get a pair of handles with it.

oh wait, the battery probably will be dead in 1hr anyway, due to that massively large screen... Not to mention the trouble in getting that thing stuffed into a carryon in the first place...

Wow, a 20.1" laptop? Seriously . . I'd like to see the practicality in that. You could easily build a small desktop with a 24" monitor for hundreds less. Also, it only has a Go7600 for starters. I guess it's not for gamers, though. That's what we have the 19" Clevo 590K for.

Oh my Holy God,
Which idiot (excuse me) puts a 7600 Go in a 20" notebook! Such a fools! I dont know which manifacturer it was but he had an SLI 7800 Go (special design) in a 19" notebook! I would also expect the same from this beast!
Also the screen resolution: 1680 * 1050! Man put a 1920*1200 in it! With 20" on that resolution it looks like 1024*768 on a 15"!
I must say I am happy with the HD-DVD...this means that DVD is finally replaced by HD-DVD... The best would be of course HD-DVD and Blueray support

Acer did Hitman. o.o; I think the giant laptop thing is getting a little rediculous. I actually think they are starting to defeat the 'All in one' purpose. I would have trouble fitting a 20.1" laptop on my computer desk. My flatpanels a 19. If I lay it flat, it hangs over the edge.
-
OK HD-DVD, 1080p format?
1680 x 1050?!!!
nice, 30 lines short of true 1080p, they can't put in a few bucks and upgrade it the UWXGA resolution? sheesh
and yea the gpu is positively anemic for this beast... what a disappointment. being a 20" footprint there's gotta be TONS of empty space in that chasis for what it's providing... either that or it's just very poorly designed. probably both.
cheers,
yass -
meh enough support and they wll change it. And it does need the 1920*1200 screen. The HD-DVD is a great selling point, which make Toshiba and Acer the first with their announcement of the HD-DVD laptop's. One thinks it isn't made for collage/university students who need a portable laptop
-
When it gets this big, making it a laptop with a battery is pointless. The dell concept made more sense.

Would be quite interesting to see!

And for HD-DVD and Blue-Ray...I don't want anything to do with that fiasco. By the time they finally settle on which one is better they'll have something new coming out. HD-DVD and Blue-Ray is like the SD memory card vs. the Sony memory sticks. -
All I have to say is it should not be labled a laptop in any way shape or form. Portable desktop I could live with. It is indeed sad to see only a 7600 in this. At least put the new 7900GS in it.
-
1680 * 1050 on a 20.1in monitor looks nothing like 1024x 768 on a 15in. I have a dell 20.1 running at 1680 and while i wouldnt mind it being UGA it def is very sharp not even close to 1024 by 768.

I think aver has just created a new category of PC's. You cant really call this a laptop anymore because it would proably break your legs. Not to mention the entire thing is probably bigger than my torso, it is almsost the size of a yardstick. I think it fills a good gap for a desktop that you can move from room to room. I love the new mac mini's but It takes too much effort to relocate that to another room for some good movie watching.
-
If that is not remade with dual SLI <insert best card at time of making here> and WUXGA resolution by some other company...
I swear I'll pitch a fit... -
that is so wrong
its not a laptop anymore
more like a lapdesktop -
Come on guys , its not a laptop , its a desktop in form of a notebook , get used to it .
Its not intended to be used as a portable but as something for your home/office that takes less space then a regular 20" desktop and is moveable from room to room and to the other places with relative ease .
I mean how many of us carry the inspiron 9300 out much ? we buy 17" laptops as desktop replacement so why not 20" ones ?
The only downside for me is that you cant put this on your lap unless you are schartzenzger and that its not powerfull enough .
Btw the bigger the "notebook" is the cheaper it should be ( except for the lcd part ) because they can use bigger components that are cheaper . -
I can put it in my lap, I'm guessing around 20 lb. My desktop and CRT monitor weigh twice that and end up in my lap quite often...
-
Sony memory stick is a joke of a format, why people accept Sony creating a POS proprietary memory format I have no idea.
and if you aren't gonna haul this beast to LAN parties (which you won't with that video card) then what is the point? -
Bragging rights?
"I got a seventeen incher myself... Beat that!"
*whips out this behemoth* "Twenteh point one, you been pwnt." -
self defense too I suppose, enough weight to be a club
-
*pulls out a knife* "Give me all yoru money!"
"A knife, you call THAT a knife? THIS is a knife" *pulls out a knife the size of a machete*
"Will you two just shut up" *smacks them both over the head with his behemoth of a laptop and they both die* -
well i don't no but 7600 geforce grafics is still fairly good i have a 128 and it will do all but a few really high games also 20 is big and it is supposed to be i think acer wants to make this your media center. also in regards to the lack of HD screen is disaponting but i have a 15 inch screen at standard ressolotion and it is faily good
