The Acer Aspire 5680 is a powerful yet portable notebook. It is equipped with one of the more powerful GPUs available in 15.4" notebook computers today, the NVIDA 7600. Together with a 2GHZ Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB of DDR2 Ram, this machine makes a great desktop replacement that is still easily portable.

Great balanced review! Also, welcome to the forum!

Yes, very nice review! I would just like to correct one thing, the Asus G1 does not have the most powerful notebook GPU, just the most powerful GPU in a midsized notebook. That said, this still has a very powerful GPU.
When I was going to buy a laptop, I looked at the predecessor to this, the 5672 with an X1600, but I heard about quality problems and the laptop getting excessively hot. I guess they improved that with the 5680. -
Excellent review, you touched on all the main issues a reader would want to know about that acer model.
I see you too cannot control your fans, acer come on ! I too have fan cycle issues
I agree with you on the fact that the acer epower nonsense is mainly useless redundant software even in XP it is usually the first application suite that I remove when I reload windows on my acer. I wonder why they continue to release it with their notebooks... -

A good informative review.
I can't avoid making comparisons with my Samsung X60 plus which has a similar general spec (T7200 + ATI X1700, etc). I managed 4,555 in PCMark05, 4,150 in 3DMark05 and 1,831 in 3DMark06. I have to assume that XP runs faster than Vista, otherwise your comment that the nVidia 7600 is bettered only by the 7700 is open to dispute. Full details of my results are via the link in my signature.

Yea dont think that "nvidia 7600 is bettered only by the 7700" is a fair statement. The x1600 does way better than the 7600, you got about ~2800 in 3dmark05 but Ive actually seen it go up to ~3500. While the x1600 should get atleast ~4000, might want to edit that. Good review by the way.

Good review ! By the way, you may want to disable the "Low Light Filter" setting (or something like that) in the webcam software to reduce video choppiness.
Cheers. -
Damn Acer and their underclocking of GPUs.
Nice review!
Why companies put the HDD on the left side of the touchpad is beyond me, probably the main thing I look for in a laptop is one on the right because 90% of the time my left hand is on the left palm rest while my right is on a mouse or using the touchpad. -
Good review!

thanks for the excellent review
acer does it again with the heat problems i still dont get it why tey never come around to fix this problem of theirs as im sure these fan cycles turn many potential customers off -

If your trying to show him the price is not $2200 usapatriot... He was talking Canadian dollars when he said the acer was $1850 and the G1 is $2170CA in Canada.

Great review! I 've had my 5680 for about 2 months now, and I agree with all your points.
The left side does get noticeabley warmer, but not uncomfortable. I got a cooling pad - the Xpad, and it has made a big improvement.
I use the wireless internet and bluetooth (for a mouse) regularly, and they are both easy to use and work great.
The screen is very vibrant so you do have to adjust the angle when watching a DVD or other videos.
The only complaint I have is with the VOIP phone. I can't get that to work, and the Acer website for driver downloads is confusing to navigate. I don't really care about this feature so I didn't bother trying to figure it out.
All in all it's great value for the features you get. ($1,700 at futureshop, and Acer offers an extended warranty of 2 extra years for $99 usd on their website). -
I´ve bought an Acer Aspire 5680 which has a Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00 S-ata 120 gig HD. I also have problems with the HD getting varm. The HD-temperature is about 30 degrees celcius when I start the comptuter but after about 20-30 minutes it has reached 48 degress even if I am only surfing the web. If I transfer files and so on it will sometimes reach 52 degrees. How is it on your 5680? Do you have the same problem? I´ve measured it with Speed Fan. I would really appreciate if you could try it.
Thanks -

BTW, is anyone running Vista on the 5680? What are your experiences with it, I'd be curious to know, especially about the negatives you've experienced.
