The 11.6" Acer AS1410 (sold as 1810T in Europe) launches at $449. The price seems unusual low, as some Atom netbooks are hardly cheaper.

    The Acer 1410 comes with
    - Intel Core 2 Solo Processor ULV SU3500, 1.40 GHz
    - 2048MB DDR2 667MHz RAM (2 DDR slots, 1 available, 4GB max)
    - 250GB (5400 RPM) SATA Hard Drive
    - 11.6" HD WXGA CrystalBrite LED-backlit Display (1366 x 768), 16:9 aspect ratio
    - Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
    - Multi-gesture Touchpad supporting circular-motion scrolling, pinch-action Zoom and page flip
    - Ports: 3 x USB 2.0, Headphone/Speaker/Line-Out, Microphone-in, VGA, HDMI, RJ-45 (LAN)
    - Approximate Unit Dimensions: 11.22" (W) x 8.03" (D) x 0.87-1.18" (H)
    - Approximate Weight: 3.08 Pounds

One of the resellers offering the AS1410 is JR.com product page.

There is a lively discussion thread about this model in the Acer subforum here.

    SWEET!

That is a pretty good deal for the money. Also a 4500HD will smoke that below par 950 any day.

LED screen, 2 ram slors, and ULV make this a winning combo

I'm in, so, so in. Hardware that much better than a netbook for $50 more? Hell yes. And I get my HD screen.

For some people it might be worth while waiting for the Dual core version with SU4100.

While the SU3500 performs snappy it lacks a little bit of power for some HD flash movies.

Yeah this is a pretty sweet deal, I have been considering the DV2z lately because its seemed to be a fairly powerful and fairly cheap netbook alternative, but I had also heard that the "Timeline" series was going to add an 11.6" model, is this it? becuase the specs look right but its tagged "Aspire" at the JR website. If so they dropped the "Timeline" part of the name for this one and released it much cheaper than I originally thought.

There are to versions. One is the "Aspire" 1410 and the other is the "Timeline" 1810. The Aspires gets 6 hours of battery life while the Timeline gets 8 hours. The Timeline versions should launch soon in the US.

I think that the 1410 might only be available with the SU3500 while the 1810T will be with the 3500 and the 1810TZ will have the Pentium dual core SU4100. None will have the ATI 4330. Also the 1810 models should have bluetooth (maybe), larger hard drives (maybe) and more ram.

No I mean come with more ram (for example the 1410 comes with 2GB, while some preorders for the 1810 abroad come with 3GB of ram. Both can use up to 4GB total). And yes they will both look exactly the same and very similar dimensions and weight.

Huh....This sounds like a plausible theory. But, they look absolutely identical, which makes no sense. Why would they bother with the Aspire series at all then, if they are releasing the exact same notebook with slightly better specs in a different model line? The Timeline model is going to cost more as well...hmm.

The Timelines are real. They are out in parts of the world and on the Energy Star website they list the 1410T, the 1810T, and the 1810TZ.

    1410T-SU3500, 2GB Ram, 250GB HDD, 6 hours battery life
    1810T-SU3500, 3GB Ram, ?? HDD, 8 hours battery life
    1810TZ-SU4100, ?? ram, ?? HDD, 8 hour battery life

I hope when Arrandale is launched in January that these all get dual core only (Core i7 620UM or 640UM)

I know that the that the 1810T is real, I just don't understand why they would release both the 1410T and the 1810T in the US. Why not just the 1410T and the 1810TZ?

Also, I just placed my preorder for a black 1410, so if these go Core i7 for $449 in January, I'm going to throw something at you. (it isn't gonna happen, the Core i7 UM's are gonna replace the SU9400/9500, which aren't in the budget machines anyways, so pipe dream away my friend. By that time, for $450, you'll probably get dual cores standard, with the SU4100 replacing the SU2700 and the SU9400 replacing the SU3500, but not Nehalem architecture, there's no way. If they do, I'll still throw something at you, and then buy one. :p)

My 1810T does not have Bluetooth.

To make things more confusing, Europe also gets a 1410 with Celeron 723.

Do you have a citation for this information?

It seems to make very little sense to release a 1410 and a 1810, where the biggest difference is just 2 hours battery life.
Wasn't there an old 1410 model with the Celeron 723? Maybe the new 1410 is just a refresh of that, with a new processor and such.

Ugh, all the sites saying that the 1410 was just a rename of the 1810. I don't know what to believe anymore!

I/we need to get a laptop for my nephews birthday. This seems like a good deal as we only have £300 to spend. I have been told to look around. They wanted a netbook with an atom processor but this is better. This res is better as well. It can also handle a bit of flash gaming, i.e runescape.

The prices are cheap in the UK but still to expensive so i am going to import it from the US. I wonder this will be released in the US?

It seems like the SU3500 (AS1410) version will come out in the US in two weeks.

If I would import it from the US I would get 19% VAT + shipping making it almost as expensive as here i think.

    Thanks Phil
I have friends who will ship it over to me.
The warranty is international so well so that is a plus.
I guess i better pre-order one soon then. I couldn't wait until the end of October anyway for them to start shipping in the UK.

This is what I was talking about. link

I was linked that by an Acer rep when I asked about release dates for the 1410. It looks like an old old model that went by the same model number. And the processor was a Celeron. Not sure if that's what you were thinking of but...

Really wish Acer would just announce a solid date for the SU3500 and SU4100 models as well as clearing up this battery issue. Why does the European model claim, and according to Phil's review, get, 8+ hours, while the US model gets a claimed 6. That makes me super sad.

@ Rachel, the US 1410 wil probably have a 4400 mAh battery, instead of the 5600 mAh in Europe.

I was talking about the new Acer 1410 11.6" with Celeron 723.

You do know my 3810T has an SU9400? The SU9300/9400/9600 used to only in high end ultraportables like the Vaio TT, but now Intel dropped their price to get culv ultraportables to sell. I really think these Timelines will get them. Get the shoe ready, cause my money is saved up. ;)

Meh, even so, I think I'll wait for the 32nm shrink before upgrading. Its only $400 (with cashback). I'll live. I need a new laptop for now, not January. (Okay, that's a blatant lie, but I want one now, so whatever.)

I've got some old tennis shoes for you, but the 1810TZ only has an SU4100 processor....so I dunno. I'll decide whether or not to throw in January.

It still sounds a bit too good to be true, to get these far better specs than netbooks and either pay the same as some netbooks like some Samsung models or not much more ($50-100) to get a much better processor, more memory, HDMI out, better graphics, higher resolution screen and still 'netbook' battery life.

Why would you buy a netbook?

I am not complaining, I am very excited to get an ultraportable with nearly the same specifications as the high-end models like the Vaio TT at a fraction of the cost. I may purchase this to replace my Vaio TZ to my trip in India in December.

Aside from the lack of Bluetooth which some netbooks have, I see no other cons so far. It sounds like Acer could make almost a big a splash as Asus did with their EEE two years ago.

Acer messed up putting the anemic Z series Atom processor in their recent 11.6" Aspire One netbooks but this looks to correct that, go Acer!

    Not going to happen.

The Acer 1410 is using a ULV processor. Mobile Core i7's are reserved for top performing laptops.

But a Core 2 solo in a 11.6 ultra portable is an achievement in itself.

Thats because Intel didn't want to manuf's combining HD screens and the standard N270/280 netbook platform, potentially to keep from cannibalizing sales of higher priced, higher margin ultraportables.

Speaking of margins, how much of a profit do you think Acer is getting with this one? It can't be much, for sure...

Why I've always said that the CULV will kill the Atom in netbooks.

As far as I'm concerned the Atom is only a nettop CPU.

The only factor that was of concern to me and others was price, where I was expecting this to retail for at least $800. But now that has been eliminated with the low price of these new ultraportables. Atom, your days are numbered!

Well, Pine Trail, with its two chip platform (CPU and GPU on one chip, then the chipset controller), is going to be pretty sweet, but until that hits, netbooks are dead to me.

Um, you do know the Core i7 620UM and 640UM are ULV prcoessors? These are the lowest end of the Arrandales and direct replacements for the SU9300/9400/9600.

    Intel Core i7 32nm (4mb l2 cache):
    620M (2.66GHz, 15W CPU/10WGPU). Uses DDR3 1066+ ram.
    640LM (2.13GHz, 15W CPU/10WGPU). Uses DDR3 1066+ ram.
    620LM (2GHz, 15W CPU/10WGPU). Uses DDR3 1066+ ram.
    640UM (1.2GHz, 8W CPU/10WGPU) Uses DDR3 800 ram.
    620UM (1.06GHz, 8W CPU/10WGPU). Uses DDR3 800 Ram.

    Intel Core i5 32nm (3mb l2 cache):
    540M (2.53GHz, 25W CPU/10WGPU). Uses DDR3 1066+ ram.
    520M (2.4GHz, 25W CPU/10WGPU). Uses DDR3 1066+ ram.

This list is correct, I've gotten the info from across the web.

Wait, wait, i5M and i7m are releasing at 32nm? Daaaamn, that's pretty sweet. Kinda wish I'd waited....but, well, whatevs, I'll wait for Sandy Bridge and build a desktop that will finally streamline my main computing resources (uber-desktop, low-powered, inexpensive ultraportable, with two decently powerful notebooks and an iMac in the background). I'm liking this idea, and any way you slice it, the 1410T rapes any netbook on the market performance-wise, and I paid the standard "premium" netbook price for it.

Speaking of which, does anyone think Asus want's to reprice the 11.6" Seashell (EEE 1101)? $429 makes it just $20 less than retail of the Timeline, with far, far, far worse specs - you're looking at a Z520 processor and GMA 500 vs the CULV platform. Yeah, no.

It's an Acer, a compromise in build quality is practically company policy. I'd be thrilled if the build was solid, but in all honesty, I'm not expecting the build quality of my 1410 to be particularly great.

However, I will say that Dell wouldn't get into this game unless they foresaw either a decent profit or a ton of sales, and their CULV ultraportable is hitting the same price. So, take it how you will.

Is the $449 price tag just a pre-order promotion or is the 1410 supposed to keep selling for that much after it's in stores?

I don't know, but since I saw nothing about a pre-order promotion, I'd guess that it'll be the MSRP.

Did you watch this clip? Not that it says everything but build quality seemed pretty solid to me. I doubt a Dell Inspiron is any better.

    <object width='425' height='344'><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/J7o0su-06fM&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/J7o0su-06fM&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='425' height='344'></embed></object>

The only 'weak' point seems to be the screen that bends quite easily. So using a keyboard protector would be a good idea.

Edit: And I'm not sure how the keyboard will hold over time.

The screen bending easily is a fault of pretty much any consumer netbook/notebook with an LED backlit screen these days. Pity. That's good though, as long as the build quality is better than the Aspire One, I'll be okay.

I wouldn't do that with the Acer :)
