Back in the middle of June AVADirect started taking preorders on the Clevo M980NU, and now they are finally starting to ship. The Clevo M980NU offers a huge 18.4" Full HD display, two NVIDIA GTX 280M graphics cards in SLI, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, three hard drives, and even a built-in TV tuner. Between now and the time of the preorder it looks like the starting price dropped from $2,590 down to $2,513, which makes the deal even sweeter.

The starting configuration includes an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, a single NVIDIA GTX 280M GPU, 2GB of memory, and a single 7200RPM hard drive. Upgrading to dual graphics cards adds on $588, which if you are buying this notebook for its graphics potential, is basically a must have item.

Stay tuned for more information on the Clevo M980NU from AVADirect. We hope to have one of these gaming monsters in our hands very soon.

    What a beast indeed.

I'm willing to carry around a 17-inch laptop but not an 18.4" . . . they are simply too large. They would be nice for home use and taking to LAN parties though - much smaller footprint than a full-blown desktop and they use less power too.

Agreed. I'm wondering at what point customers/manufacturers will draw the line? This might be an ideal desktop replacement (esp. when fully decked out), but any notion of this being portable is almost a joke....

Well, not true. It is portable in the sense that it can be carried in a backpack with you to LAN parties, not in the sense that it can be used on an airplane to watch a movie before the 12-cell battery gets drained.

Yes, this is one beast of a notebook. Pretty soon the term "notebook" will be changed to "phonebook" at the rate the sizes are increasing. :)

I agree with the fact that this notebook is a great desktop replacement, but expecting to watch movies and play games extensively on the battery is unreal. We do our best to make sure that everyone has the right expectations when purchasing this type of notebook (Clevo D900F is similar).

As long as you are fully aware of what it is capable of, and what it's good for, then this could be your best friend...or if it's consuming your life, your worst enemy. :p
