ASUS and Disney have teamed up to bring us the Netpal Netbook for children. The Netpal will go on sale at the end of July in the US at Amazon.com and Toys 'R US stores. Features include an 8.9-inch screen, Intel Atom processor, and Windows XP operating system with a custom Disney skin and Disney widgets, including one that streams Radio Disney. Aimed at children ages 6-12, it will retail for $350 and come in either "Magic Blue" with Mickey Mouse icons or "Princess Pink" with floral icons.

I got my Dell when I was 11-12.
Though, for me, I was coding and stuff by the time I was 12.

I don't see how a 6 yearold is going to use it though.

Interesting how the idea of netbooks stemmed from the One Laptop Per Child program aimed at giving children in developing nations a chance to learn and morphed into luxury items for developed nations to give to little kids who will probably trash them the second they get a better toy. Especially considering how fast the netbooks have been developed compared to the actual OLPC program

My son is 7 and I bought him an Asus eee.

I first bought it for him so we can use video chat when I am away, but in addition to that he now....

looks up instructions for making Bionicles (lego robots).
He listens to music, plays games, watches movies.
He takes pictures with his digital camera and puts them on it.
He writes emails to his Grandmom and Pop Pop

He does I guess what most casual users do I guess. I have limited his access time to the internet through my modem. In addition, I must type in a password in order for him to visit sites through content advisor.

I believe it shows how capitalism works, i.e. if there is more revenue to generate from making and selling netbooks rather than giving them away at a significant discount or expect people make the donations from their purchase (how many people actually bother?), companies would tend to invest more in the areas which makes the most money, at the expense of improving the lives of those in impoverished nations. $$$ is everything, everything!
