While Optimus is great technology, ASUS obviously missed the mark with its utilization. Who needs a good battery life with 16-17inch laptops anyway? If it was for something like a 14-inch or below laptop it would've made more sense.

My question as well. I think they're introducing 13"-14" notebooks with Optimus as well. I'm guessing they may or may not see strong sales this quarter with this one! The exception I'd make is if incorporating Optimus was as cheap as or cheaper than simply equipping this one with a regular non-switchable GPU.

EDIT: The way I see it, regardless pending anti-trust lawsuits against Intel, switchable graphics are the future. It's no surprise considering the trends we're seeing toward the GPU taking up more of the CPU's tasks than usual.

A 17" Laptop having switchable graphics makes none either. Now in a 13.3 or a 14" I could understand but this big beast?

Although weight isn't too bad, this doesn't need switchable graphics.

I do. I do image processing often on-site at remote locations. I often need a powerful CPU, lots of storage, a large high-quality screen, decent battery lift, and only 2D graphics (no games). For those times at home when I might use 3D graphics, it would be nice to have a more powerful GPU available.

This one disappoints me because of it's low-res monitor. I just can't believe how hard it's becoming to replace my 6-year-old laptop which was easy to configure even then with a 1920x1200 monitor. I'll tolerate losing 120 pixels vertically to 1920x1080 (grudgingly) but not more. 1600x900 just doesn't cut it.

What a weird thing to say. Only if someone is full of preconceptions about 17" laptops and its users.

I have a DV7 and i would welcome more battery life and less heat if the expense wouldn't be too much.

I do as well ... I have the HP 8710 with a slice battery and can get a little over 9 hours of word processing time ... plus all I have to do is put the creature to sleep when the slice runs out and attach a fully charged one. Effectively I am able to get about 19-20 hours on the machine with 3 slices with a 1920x1080 screen res, which I find very convenient.
