The dv5t has better quality speakers. I did not find the G73's subwoofer made a huge difference while playing games or music. Like I said though, the G73 still has a very decent sound system for a notebook; it is significantly better than the Clevos in that regard.
I unfortunately do not have the unit in my possession anymore so I can't run any more tests on it.

As mentioned in my last post would it be possible for you to disclose where you optained the technicolor parachute wallpaper you used in the review? I like it very much!
Thanks! -

Good review! Oh, how i can't wait for this baby to be in my hands
-
does it have an expresscard slot for me to be able to use a firewire express card? because one of my functions for a laptop is video broadcasting...and firewire is what makes that easy.
edit: just looked at the review again: I'm a sad panda. I might have to scratch this superb laptop off of my list because of a single port. -
-
no idea. can I?
-
I doubt you can get a hub with firewire if the laptop doesn't come with any port faster than USB 2.0, even if you could get one, it will be connected with USB 2.0 port, which means the data still have to go through that slow USB 2.0 port, making it meaningless.
-
yea, that's what I figured.
I'm back to being a sad panda. it's perfect except for that. -
I'd get one of these is a heartbeat if it had one esata and/or expresscard, but absolutely not without. -
probably because it would reduce quite a lot of their motherboard production cost if they do without any high speed connections.
-
i doubt adding a single firewire or expresscard slot would have greatly increased their manufacturing costs.
however, they're going to be a guaranteed $1700 lighter in the pockets after missing my sale on this one. -
It's not just the slot, I'm speculating that it could save quite a lot without having any high speed connection bandwidth designed in the motherboard, I think that's how a motherboard design without those ports allowed for 4 ram slots as well, since Asus produce their own motherboards. Together with their self-manufactured graphics card, is the reason for the competitive pricing.

How does one calculate the number of pixels per inch?? I have the Best Buy model with a 1600x900 screen.

Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
You can calculate PPI using this tool:
Display Dimensions Calculator -
Thanks a lot, Charles.
For those with the Best Buy version at 1600x900:
PPI = 106.11
Pitch = .2394

I am looking at buying a Asus G73 but don't know which model to buy as there are many. I was wondering if I was to buy the model with only 1X 500GB hard drive will I be able to upgrade it with another and what other parts of the laptop can I upgrade. Like can I put in USB 3.0 ports? or put in a Blu Ray Disk Drive? Thanks
-
Yes, you'd be able to add another hard drive at a later time. However, the G73 doesn't come with a spare hard drive mounting cage, so you'd have to buy one.
You would not be able to upgrade to USB 3.0 ports as there are no USB 3.0 headers on the motherboard that you could plug an external USB 3.0 reader into.
If you wanted to spend the money you could buy an external blu ray reader and plug it into a USB 2.0 port. You could even buy an internal one if you wanted to do a little surgery on your laptop.
Other than than, about the only thing you'd change no the G73 is to add more ram. However, as even the cheapest version out there, the one from Best Buy, has 6 GB, which is more than enough for almost anybody.

Oh ok thanks, another question I had was is there a big difference with a HD screen and a Full HD screen on the G73?
-
The resolution, normal HD is 720p, 1600x900 (also known as HD+) in this case.
Full HD is 1920x1080 -

You wouldn't be able to see the picture quality difference unless you had a 1920x1080 screen. Displaying a full HD picture on a less than full HD screen means you have to scroll around to see the entire picture, which defeats the purpose. What you could see is a scaled down image of two pictures showing how many icons or rows and columns (like in an Excel document) can be drawn on the screen at once for the two different resolutions. If you are going to be doing a lot of spreadsheets or want to work in two documents side by side, then 1920x1080 would be a big help. If you mainly want to game, then I'd stick with the 1600x900 screen as the HD5870 can handle that resolution much more easily leading to increased frame rates in demanding games like Crysis.

No, I was referring to physical dimension side by side.
-
how much would the battery life increase if the screen was HD and not Full HD?

Go for the full HD. -
I was thinking about getting the Asus G73JH-A3 which has a 1 TB memory but I really need to know if there are any issues with this model and syncing to an iphone or ipad. I have a Sony Vaio that I got from bestbuy that can't sync with my iphone. I have found out that there are issues with windows 7 64 bit OS and certain intel chipsets (esp p55, but not only) that prevent syncing wiht an iphone/itouch/ipad. So does anyone have a Asus G73JH-A3 and can sync it with those devices? Thanks so much!!
PS: this is a known issue at apple but they do not seem to be doing anything about it -
I have recently bought an Asus G73Jh, and it suits my type of work perfect. However there is a small minor issue which I don't know is normal.
Under any power scheme with or without "Turbo mode" some component seems to make a high pitched noise* when the computer is working/ using minimum amount of available resources** - but it disappears when I run a a program that draws approx. 5% CPU usage or more.
It is "almost" (but it is not annoying then) not present when the laptop is plugged in though, I believe it is a power supply problem.
However is this behaviour normal for the G73Jh?
(I have read about similar problems with other cheaper laptops, but haven't found a such complaint about it with the G73Jh yet)
It is pretty annoying after 5mins or so, it feels like my head is going to explode due to "overload" failure.
I just need a confirmation if it is normal/ unormal - I'm going to send it back for service if it's not.
Thanks in advance.
*Some sounds are no audible by elder people, Im eighteen years old and can hear it clearly.
**It is present when web browsing and similar, but not when I eg. play a video with adobe flash player in the web browser. -
Hey, thanx for an excellent review. I created an account here to ask you this quick question:
How does this Asus compare with the Sony Vaio VPCF136FM/B (I hope that's an understandable title for the model. It's a i7/6GB ram/640HD/1gb video (NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M )
In short, I wonder which of these two laptops to get for gaming and home office.HTML:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat13504&type=page&pageIdentity=searchDriven&useProductString=true&productString=1218243761956*1218240958342&unProductString=1218231024657*1218247186371&catId=
Thank you for any input you might have! -

In the review:
Under "cons", it does not mention "glossy screen".
If reviewers dont make this an issue, who will?????????

Had nothing but trouble from mine since buying it february 2010. All the stuff listed above, been through it for a year now. Its now on its way back to supplier with
1. AGAIN intermittently freezing up for no reason(this is after the sound driver update)
2. Losing the one harrddrive intermittently. Disappears from BIOS.
The support sucks, they claimed to have fixed it last time with a BIOS update. Same stuff all over again.
Very very disappointed - its such a nice machine, but not worth all the inconvenience. Rarely use it for games, but rather for its awesome processing power and RAM - DB, AppServer, portal development.
Meantime bought a <insert well-supported vendor here> laptop at 60% the price, 24hr on-site repair waaranty for 3 years, faster processor, better screen, awesome graphics.......
What the other guys cant compare with to G73JH though is:
2 Harddrive bays - THAT ROCKS!
mother of all laptop cooling systems....
....but i dont think I'll ever buy an ASUS ever again....
