Absolutely. HD playback stutters now and then, but non-HD is extremely smooth.

Yes, I've done a lot of searching for Asus rebates and Live Search Cashback deals...nothing for that model. Best price thus far is on eBay for $417 (no shipping or other fee). And those sites that claim to find "best deals" often steer you to high-end prices for the same product! Pricewatch seems to be the best. Certainly MySimon is a loser.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 2, 2015 -
Go to www.live.com and search "cheap ps3" or "cheap wii". At the top one of the ads will be for eBay; click that and your cashback will activate for all eBay purchases.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 2, 2015 -
I'm on my 2nd 1000H 160GB. The first one's HD got noisy after 5 days, it sounded like the cooling fan running at very high speed but I determined that it was the label-side of the Seagate HD vibrating. If you gently put your finger on the middle-left of the label the noise level went down.
The 2nd one's keyboard has lots of flex in the corners unlike the first one and the keys in the upper right and lower right will sometimes make an additional click on the upstroke that sounds like they are sticking when you first type on them. -

I joined Live Cashback today, they did not list that model, the 1000H, but had a lot of other Asus netbooks. Couldn't find any Asus rebate for that model, either...and I went to various coupon sites in hopes I would. Maybe I just missed out on a recent offer. TIA.
Anywayz, now that I've joined this forum, I was able to PM Jaydizz, who offered to help anyone get it for $250...though I doubt the deal exists now. Hopefully, he'll get back to me. Who knows? Maybe I'll get lucky.
Thanks for your non-help BTW. -

Okay, I'm learning about cashback, and here's a useful tidbit I'd like to share, though most regulars on this forum probably know already:
There is a web page that describes very well, how to use Cashback on eBay to save 30% on a purchase. Since I'm new here I'm not allowed to include URLs until I've posted 15 times, I'll have to find a way around this. Using alltheweb search engine, I searched for:
eBay cashback rules
The link I refer to is titled:
*EDITED again* 30% off at eBay through MSFT cashback program
from the fatwallet message board. Here are some excerpts:
--begin quotes:
just noticed this while doing a search on live.com for the wii... basically eBay is giving 35% off pretty much anything on their site (only Buy It Now w/ PayPal items) through a Microsoft CashBack program. this is huge... you can get up to $250 back. i just bought a roomba and got $100 off...
# Go to eBay.com and find an item you want to buy (it MUST have a Buy it now option with paypal)
# You can get up to $200 per completed item/auction. Pick something $800 to get maximum CashBack
# Add that item to your watch list.
# go to live search, type in gold coin or try the following links until you see a CashBack link in the gray 'Sponsored Sites' section (refresh a few times if you don't see it):
gold coin
ps3
# click on the 20% banner (Live Search CashBack)
# Now you are in eBay go to my eBay and look at items on your watchlist
# Click on that item
# Click on 'Buy it now'.
# Before 'Committing to Buy', be sure the CashBack details are shown on the screen with the proper 20% of the item(s) value
# check out and pay with Paypal and the CashBack will be yours!...
eBay may permit you to combine CashBack Rewards with other eBay promotions, coupons, or gift certificates (each, an eBay Promotion)and may permit you to receive CashBack Rewards on purchases of gift cards or gift certificates. If eBay elects to do so, you will be provided with an opportunity to combine Cash Back Rewards with the eBay Promotion during the checkout flow on eBay. With the exception of eBay Promotions as described herein, CashBack Rewards cannot be combined with any other offer on purchases on eBay.
--end quotes
Anywayz, there's more info on that page, including useful links such as one to eBay's cashback rules. Well, now I understand what Jaydizz was talking about: between cashback and coupons, his netbook cost only $250. To quickly find the product you desire, and if there's a cashback with it, do an advanced search for the product and include "cashback" as in my example here:
ASUS eee PC 1000H cashback
Make sure you select "Include title and description", as many sellers (that provide cashback) do not include "cashback" in their titles. Lo and behold I found two 1000H's with cashback. Walla!
BUT BEWARE:
Apparently, some sellers are quite devious w/cashback, as the second netbook listed was priced way high ($529.99), so as to make even a 20% reduction pointless. AND seller did not state what the actual percentage would be, quote: "You are eligible to get this item for 8% - 35% cheaper by using live.com!"
Now the FIRST seller was a good guy, he honestly stated 30% cashback, and the full price was much more reasonable: $469.99. PLUS, seller #1's netbook had a larger HD (160GB) than #2's (80GB), with all other features identical. So with cashback, seller 1's price comes to $328.99, while seller 2's price at the MAXIMUM 35% (which I sincerely question) would still come to $344.49. Remember, no promise for that high percentage...and if it turns out to be only 8%, final price would be a hoggy $487.59. (At 35% cashback you wind up paying the reasonable bargain of $373.77...but I'd count on the moon turning purple before I'd count on that 35%!)
Ooops, I just discovered BOTH sellers charge 8.5% CA sales tax! This gives us a grand total of seller 1's $373.77 and seller 2's $405.54 (for the highest cashback percentage), $529.04 (for the lowest cashback percentage).
Another caveat: don't assume that every item listed in your search provides cashback, 'cause they won't. Search for "cashback" on each page you load.
Perhaps my experience with this cashback learning curve will benefit other viewers of my message. Permission given to share this message to anyone else, anywhere else, that it may benefit as many as possible. Happy hacking! -
What are the benefits of choosing the SSD version of this laptop if you aren't concerned about which operating system comes pre-installed (couldn't you install WIN XP later on if you wanted)?
Also, I've seen a lot of eBay listings with the 1000HA model number, but I do not see that model number on ASUS's website. What are the specifications of the 1000HA model?
Thanks in advance! And oh yeah...I've used Live.com's cashback and it works. About 60 days ago I purchased a Nintendo Wii with 30% cashback and I've just now gotten paid through Paypal.com. I am able to see eBay listings that qualify. Just be careful that you do not purchase the 1000HD when you search for 1000H. -
Free wi-fi...fantastic! Cheap laptops a la netbooks! Linux free OS! Yaaay! So I'm VERY excited about getting my Asus 1000H, which is more highly rated than any other notebook in the sub-$600 netbook range.
The reason why I'd prefer to get my netbook w/WinXP already installed, is the cost. Much more expensive to purchase the OS out of the box, than with your system. And since Linux can easily be installed (or booted up) via a USB memory stick, hey, I got the best of both worlds.
In my latest online research, I've learned that Linux still has issues with various codecs for viewing multimedia...whereas WinXP is hassle-free. So, as a Linux advocate (also, founder of Berkeley Unix User Group--BUUG dot ORG--since Jan. 2001 BTW) I will attempt to perform all my Internet and offline usage w/Linux. But should I run into a problem, such as failure to play this or that video, then I'll reboot into WinXP.
I've also discovered newer online services that REQUIRE Windows, such as remote storage. There is this new Adobe AIR that provides a smooth interface between PC and cybersapce, that works with online storage and other services I've yet to discover. Adobe's specs also require a minimum 1GB CPU, so that eliminates my going for the Celeron.
There is also the matter of peripherals, some may not be Linux compatible. I'll do my best to find devices that work w/both OS's, so long as those that are Linux ready do not come at a higher price.
Now, regarding solid state drives (SSD): I think they're HOT, and I'd love to own one! But I want enough HD space to download several movies or a bunch of videos that I can watch later on when I'm home, where I have no high-speed access. I realize I can buy SSD cards that will expand my HD size, but they're rather expensive.
Otherwise, I can copy everything from the SSD to an external drive when I get home, and have a clean slate for my next day's browsing and downloading. As for my own data, it's still barely 2GB total, thus easy to backup to a USB stick.
Now, my research has shown me that these standard hard drives in netbooks are quite durable...so I decided to forego SSD for the nonce. Two years down the line though, I'll celebrate my 60th (ugh) birthday with the purchase of a new netbook w/120 SSD!
Google the phrase:
ASUS 1000H 1000HD 1000HA difference
and you'll find third from the top, or close to it, the link entitled "ASUS to release Eee PC 1000HA | Eee PC - Blog".
In brief, here are a couple quotes from that forum:
The 1000HA is exactly like the 1000H, the A is added only to signify it’s the 1000 with the atom processor, rather than the 1000HD which which has the D for the Dothan core Celeron....
1000HA have bigger HDD (160GB) and no 11n and no bluetooth (but this I am not sure about, some sites says it have BT and some says it doesnt)
And the 1000H I know, has an 80GB HD (way plenty for me), plus bluetooth and 11n. (And that's the model I desire / My anticipation is afire / For bluetooth, "n" I do aspire / and the CPU I do admire!)
Here is my list of similarities between rebate and Cashback:
- You have to wait a long time before your refund comes in, if at all.
- If it doesn't show up as promised, you need to make your appeal. No guarantee of a refund.
- If you don't follow the rather complicated and tricky steps to a T, you lose!
- Additonal tax and/or shipping fee could wipe out most, or even all, of the refund value.
The tricky steps for Cashback, are that you must make sure you purchase a "Buyitnow" item, not the auction. AND, you must complete the cashback process within one hour, and in the same browser session.
But what if your browser crashes or freezes up in the middle of this process? You'll have to reload the browser and try again, of course...but then this will register as a NEW session, thus your cashback option is eliminated. You are therefore STUCK with the higher price.
I also notice that the Asus netbook w/cashback offer, is priced considerably higher than those without. Granted, after cashback you make a hefty savings. But if your browser freezes or crashes, then I guess you're screwed...having to pay a higher price than those sold w/o Cashback. And since the seller isn't the one required to pay that refund, he gets the full amount whether or not your Cashback gets through. So, disreputable sellers can sell their cashback items for the maximum prices...they make more, and you still get a pretty good bargain...IF you are not thwarted in any of your Cashback steps. Example:
The 1000H listed as a Cashback item, is going for $503.49! (80GB HD, no extra RAM or other added features.) When the standard retail price is $429 these days. Now, I presume you must pay tax on the full price, which did not occur to me in a previous comment, therefore my calculations were lower than they were supposed to be. Let's calculate the 8.25% tax into that cashback Asus. We get a grand total of $545.75 before cashback. Also, the seller's site says you MAY get 10% - 35% off with PayPal if eligible. So what exactly is the cashback amount?
I go to search.live.com to find that product's actual cashback deal. But no, they only say "You may get 30% off with PayPal if eligible." So I click on that link, to see if I can finally discover the real amount deducted. No luck, I'm just taken back to that page on eBay, which says I MAY get 10% - 35% off! Am I supposed to TRUST that I'll get at least 20% off? Who knows, but I really doubt it!
For the sake of argument, let's say I get the full 35% refund. The state tax I presume is calculated w/o the cashback reduction. The tax comes to $42.80. The cashback amount is $176.22, which reduces the pre-tax amount to $327.27. With tax, the grand total comes to $370.10.
However, I conjecture you will NOT get that large a cashback...and neither the seller nor cashback will inform you of the actual refund amount...untile AFTER you make the purchase!
Now, what does this mean if I go ahead and make the purchase, then click on the cashback button, and once more, an error page pops up? Seems to me I lose, and must pay the FULL amount, a lot higher than what I can get through other sellers who don't use cashback. In fact, there's one for sale at $417, free shipping.
It has been my strict policy to not purchase anything w/mail-in rebate...because of my unhappy experiences w/rebate, like many others. The potential for the exact same sort of nuisance via Cashback rears its ugly head! And obviously, my suspicions have proven true, as I look deeper into this matter. BTW, I just posted the following to the seller in question:
You don't give the actual cashback percentage, only this: "you MAY get 10% - 35% off with PayPal if eligible." Huh? I went to cashback and signed in...and they won't tell me what the actual cashback will be. I REFUSE to pay for any item before knowing exactly what the cashback is! Other sellers have no problem quoting the exact percentage. You also charge considerably higher for this item, compared to the average price for this same model, which is $427. I'm very confused here, and would like a sensible answer. You have a 99.7% positive rating, but your cashback deal seems highly suspect.
I don't know about you, but if Cashback can't give me an instant deduction upon purchase, they're just another form of rebate: hokey and deceptive. And I'm exhausted playing games with these sites, wasting so much time juggling one page from another, to find out the best deals. (After all, I'm doing this at those turtle-slow dialup speeds!)
Thanks for your questions just the same. I hope I answered them to your satisfaction. Enjoy the day. Or night. :b
PS: Wikipedia has an excellent rundown on the whole line of Asus netbooks. Title: "ASUS Eee PC". But here's the lowdown:
The 1000HD released in September of 2008 is slightly cheaper version of the 1000 series. It features the same specifications as the 1000H except it uses a 900Mhz Celeron CPU chip.
The 1000HA released in October of 2008 also costs less then the 1000H but has the same Intel Atom 1.6Ghz CPU, 160GB HDD, and 1GB of RAM. It does not however have Bluetooth or wireless N. -
MY PLANS FOR MY 1000H NETBOOK
It will serve as my main system at home too, considering my low income and my sense of adventure. I'll connect it to my larger LCD screen (after tossing out my ancient Win98se box), plug in a full size keyboard and mouse (maybe get a bluetooth mouse), and use an external HD and DVD-RW drive.
I'll get a coupla USB sticks: one for data backup, another for loading Linux!
I'll also take advantage of those free online storage services, to backup my data redundantly. AND use Google and other free services to write documents and perform other tasks that I used to do exclusively on my HD, now that I'll soon have high-speed access. The Internet IS my HD! Yay.
Using the built-in webcam and mic, I plan to videoconference w/other activists around the world, while enjoying a cuppa java; and interview folks. (I'm an activist for both gays and homeless people, and like to give them a voice on the web.)
I'd like to turn this into my own Internet radio show, if at all feasible, money-wise. Otherwise, the show won't be live, but provide a new show at least once per week, that anyone can load and play. No streaming video, as it will probably be cost prohibitive. Download mp3's is the way I'd go...and since the 'net is so fast these days for most, what's to complain about?
I have no high-speed access at home. So while at wi-fi coffeehouses or libraries, I'll download whatever videos I'd like to view once back home. Including news stations and favorite TV shows.
So if all goes according to plan, I'll then ditch my old analog TV and VHS box. Screw digital and HD! I'll get it all through the Internet.
I'm still thinking through whether or not to get a new desktop system...emachines makes it so affordable! Just in case my netbook breaks, gets stolen, or suffers some other unhappy incident. At least, I'll have some sort of Internet access until it's repaired or replaced. MAYBE I'll just get a second netbook? Hmmm.
I'm havin' FUN just contemplatin' my new netbook...and SOON I'll have one. And thanks, webmaster (or sysop or whatever), for notebookreview.com...it's been a great help to me already, in just a very short time! -

Very happy with my purchase. After cashback, the total cost (free shipping/insurance, no tax) comes to $315. For this:
Asus Eee PC 1000H
1GB RAM, 1.6GB atom, 80GB HD, 802.11N, 1.3mp webcam, bluetooth, WinXP (and so on).
Seller has a positive score of 10 since 1999.
And I made sure to complete the entire cashback process, read their msg. posted in my eBay mail, then went to my live.com mail box, and activated the cashback order to M$.
Wait'll my friends back on Hive9 hear about this! They'll be yellow with envy.

In terms of the SSD, they used 2 for the 1000H. I'm pretty sure it is an 8GB and a 32GB. The 8GB is decent, the 32GB is not so much. Right now, the SSD's used are just not great. you're better off going with the HDD version and buying a 2.5" SSD to replace with instead. -
FedEx delivered my lovely little Asus PC four days ago, and I'm having a ball. It's actually the 1000HA model, includes integrated webcam/mic and 160gb HD. Pearly white. I invite everyone to visit my blog entry:
