I think it has more to do with the fact that they are trying to get away from the old image and create a new one for themselves. AMD has been known for their power hungry, hot running chips. With brazos and llano they have a chance to make up for the past mistakes and start fresh, and I think that's exactly what's going on here.

Yes, AMD and Intel are known to come up with new names for their processors from time to time.

    Wasn't expecting that comment.

Anyhoo, I agree with Roger ... I think it is bound up with working towards a change of "image" on AMD's part....

It's a change of technology, why should it keep the same name?

Did Intel decide to stick with "Core 2" when it made the switch to the "Core i"?

Or am I confused and they're just dropping the naming scheme for the same processors already out?

Actually I still remember the Intel rep saying they chose the name Core i7 cause "it sounded cool" lol :p

I miss AMD's Duron processors. The first processor I ever bought was a Duron. :(

Funny, because the first processor I ever owned was an AMD K6-2 400! It was a hand me down from when my step dad bought a then new Athlon. I could get it to 500Mhz no problem with the jumpers on the motherboard. I actually still had it up until 2 months ago when I sold my collection of old processors on Ebay.

It was eventually bound to happen. Like how many of us here are fond of our memories with the Durons and Bartons, the next generation will be fond of their Athlons and Semprons.

The Athlon name died for me when it was retired from front-line status. It lasted a while though. The first Athlons came out I think late '99, early 2000, followed by Athlon XP in late 2001, and then Athlon 64 in late '03. Barton was never a product brand name, but the code name for the 512KB L2 cache 120nm Athlon XP core. Duron died a lot earlier, only being based off of the Athlon and Athlon XP. I did buy an original Sempron as soon as socket 754 was released, though I have no nostalgia for it.

Prior to that though there was a Motorola 6809, and then a MOS Technology 6510. :)
