According to a report from a German website, the upcoming AMD Turion 64 X2 -- dual core 64-bit mobile processor, is slated for aMay 9th release, well ahead of the Intel dual core 64-bit Merom release set for the end of the year.
German website PCWelt.de reports that the release date for the Turion 64 X2 is May 9th, and lists 7 different versions of the processor that will be available initially. Interestingly, the maximum power dissipation for these new dual core 64-bit processors are in line with the current Turion 64 processors.
Here's a table of the processors that AMD will be releasing on May 9th:

Very good information. May 9th is early indeed, I'm surprised. I know what's going in my next machine.

I wonder how long it will be this time before notebooks appear. And hopefully some decent manufacturer with good configurations.... Lenovo sounds good
-
Did you guys noticed, that in the second page it says each core will be able to run in different speeds?
I think this is awesome (for amd) as many rumors were that amd would not release a dual core with this feature.
There were quite a few posts about that. -
Sounds like it'll be a wonderful processor, wonder how it'll compare to the Meroms?
-
I expect the Merom to be better since it will make use of faster RAM especially with DDR2's amazingly high latencies! -

IMO, AMD is on track to accelerate their gain on the the laptop market share by actually getting ahead of Intel with the 64-bit dual-core processors.

The HORROR!!!! The HORROR!!!!
Dying Sony (stuck in tongure depressor-land -- see my other posts), waiting....waiting....waiting...for the Core Duo Sager 5720 (which I thought would be the best machine for a 9-month period for me) and now an aroma of nirvana (SW I am developing is targeted at AMD-64 Dual++ Core Opterons) just outside the envelope of how long I think I can keep my current machine alive -- just venting, don't pay much attention to this...... -

Just a thought. Does anyone read german.

Hey qwester,
I guess you don't realize that Turion X2 will support DDR 2 800MHz.
Charlie da Silva from Peru -
does anyone know if you can replace existing turion processors for the turion X2? like, in the same mobo?
-
Zedman: No, you cannot replace a current Turion with a Dual Core Turion, as AMD is introducing a new socket to go along with it.
This is great news, as it is better than people had been speculating. Two independently controlled cores and 2x 1meg L2 cache in the higher models as opposed to the x2 512k that some were speculating. Bring them on!!

thanks for the info
-
i wonder what socket they will be using
-
The socket that will be used the AM2 new type but of course a mobile variant.
And I really doubt we will have DDR2 800MHz SODIMMs by release time, except of course if products don't show up for 2 months at least. 667MHz is barely available now. But later on of course they will ... that's the whole point of moving to DDR2 -
*drool* wow, if this has the pacific virtualization it will be a developers dream.
-
Wow! Good news! Esp Turion 64 X2 MT-42 looks good with 25W rating and 2MB cache. It will be cool X2 MT-42 with DDR2 800. I guess this will not get outdated for a while with 64Bit and Dual core.( I mean not speed wise, but compatibilitywise).
I hope pricing will competetive to Core-Duo atleast to start with. Intel is going to drop Core-Duo prices, so AMD should match those I guess. -
i just hope that when these beautiful chips come out that:
1) They are competitively priced with the intel duo core procs
2) Laptops offer the chip with Nvidia graphics instead of the ****ty xpress200m for us linux users!
3) battery life is close to or better than duo core intel procs
-dj -
if battery life was better than just dothan, i'd be happy
-
Does anyone have a qualified guess on when we will be seeing notebooks with the Turion 64 X2 pocessor, since I am looking for a new notebook and will consider waiting a few months to buy one if I can get a Turion 64 X2!!
