I actually think it was a good move for AMD; the ATI co-branding was confusing. It might help unify their brand name in the long term.
And with the AMD Fusion CPU+GPU chip coming out (which won't even be called Fusion when launched -- see the link at the bottom of the news story), it makes a lot of sense . . . general consumers may not be aware that AMD bought ATI and thus have trouble making sense of what the device is. -

It seems that AMD will retain the ATi name for atleast the HD 6000 series.

This is a very bad mistake. Everyone is familiar with the ATI logo branding and it's an excellent one at that. Personally I think they should separate the brands into their own companies like they used to be before the buyout. You shouldn't see ATI on AMD's website and vise versa, they both stand on their own very well.
