Over the past few weeks, we have reviewed six backup and recovery utilities each with their own capabilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Some programs worked perfectly while others fell flat on their digital faces. We have a new appreciation for how difficult it is to get backup and recovery software right. Read on to see our recommendations!

can we add more to the list?

i suggest windows home server, obviously :)

    * Ease of use -> even my mom gets it. i can point with the finger on the box and say, now, there's the copy of your data :)
    * Partition/hard drive backup and restoration -> works perfect and fast (depending on the network)
    * File/folder backup and restoration -> works fast and quite nice (as it maps a virtual drive onto your system, and you can copy back like if it's a simple file copy)
    * Security and notifications -> reports if some systems antivir isn't up to date, backup is old, etc.. reporting is optional
    * Scheduling backups -> normally daily, and configurable how much backups are held how long. configurable anyways.
    * Extra features
media center integration, full NAS features, addons possible, webserver, remote access to help your mom while not being around, etc..

it would deserve a real article, though.. :)

Windows Home Server requires an entirely new server computer, something that was out of the scope of these articles. That being said, I'm looking into getting that kind of roundup done.

Anyway, discovered a small typo courtesy of our editors. NTI BackupNow 5 should have been cited for a bad user interface in the 'Ease of Use' section...not the category leader ATI.

    C'mon guys... :p

Since Shadow Protect for some reason won't work on my Thinkpad T400, I use Image For Windows and Image For Linux for restoring. Small program, fast and works flawlessly. Shadow Protect as you said is also top notch.

I would have been very interested in reading your evaluation of Paragon Drive Backup. Isn't it directly comparable to these products?

I have used Acronis True Image Home 10 (now two or three versions old) for some time and been happy with the product. However, support is extremely slow. For years, both peer and user support was offered on Wilder's Security Forums, which ran well. Acronis has just moved their forum support to their own servers in Russia, and you can now fall asleep just waiting for the server to respond to reading the next message. Now, even peer support is unbearably slow.

When and if I have to replace TIH 10, I'll be looking at other vendors.

well, it does fit the starting description (except for the "we have reviewed", of course):

but it's obviously in another league. but for any home/workplace with >1 and <10 pc's in use, it's way to go.. can't wait for your review.

Acronis Version 2010 has been released. Do you know if the 2009 issues have been resolved in 2010?
