Notebook PCs and netbooks coming to market early in 2011 are expected to be outfitted with camera sensors from Omnivision as well as other gear supporting the same 1080p high definition (HD) video resolution already commonplace in HDTVs.

I'm actually curious how many video conferencing/chat applications will support 1080p video once these webcams start to show up in laptops.

1080p sounds cool, but it you've got 1080p video streaming both ways for a a two-way video chat then I can see that murdering your internet connection. I'd suspect that the video coming from these webcams will be heavily compressed or down-scaled (or both) unless you have the right software and an extremely fast connection to your ISP.

I was thinking the same thing, first we need proper internet.

We have .3mp webcams still but 12.2mp camera phones...

Then again I have never used my web cam.

Yep, 1080p webcams don't make much sense until internet is fast enough to support them. I can hardly watch a Youtube video much have a video conference in 1080p! I suppose many people would likely use these to make video podcast and stuff Youtube though. Maybe not completely pointless, but close.
