if its as easy as xbox360 modification then i guess i can do it.

what is the lowest prices for the things i need, i atleast want a amd processor, and which motherboard should i buy? i basically need a list of materials/parts ill need, ill be able to handle the rest, looking for cheap display (reasonable resolution)

if anyone can message or reply thanks alot.

Some notebook resellers sell "barebone" laptops, which you add your own processor, hdds, memory, etc.

    some barebones: XoticPC - Newegg

Other than that, many laptop parts are not upgradable, and most of the custom laptops/hybrids i've seen are too hot & huge, or never work right. Good luck

Although, one user on here, K-Tron is building a custom laptop, i'm sure he will post in this thread.

what are you talking about exactly? you can't build a notebook. you would have to get a barebone and install the hd, processor, ram, ect....

If you're going to attempt a DIY notebook, the first thing you're going to need is very good skills at fabricating parts out of plastic and metal, and fabricating electronic components, and it's going to cost you quite a lot more than a DIY desktop would, because there are very few off-the-shelf components for such a project, unlike in the case of a DIY desktop.

For example, take a gander at this project, computer in a briefcase:

    thats a cool project.
I hope the guy didnt use it long cause it would blow up.
    Why?
Look at the top right corner of the briefcase. That is the power supply.
Do you see how open it is?
    That is a big no-no.
A power supply needs to be self contained in a steel shell no matter what. Its not just for grounding, but for containing short wave electromagnetic fields from interrupting with the rest of the components.

I am working on a similar project where I am using a server grade motherboard and two quad core processors for a laptop. Its not made of junk, but rather expensive toys. I will have a guide for it in the next few months.

If I remember the article, I don't believe it lasted that long - probably died from precisely the points you make.

You can go with a so-called whitebook, or barebones, which will allow you to customize some of the components, such as the processor (you can choose from a limited number of processors that are supported by the BIOS and motherboard already installed in the barebones), the hard drives, and a few other options; however, if your context is DIY desktops, you will not find that sort of flexibility in notebooks.

I'd check the Ben Heck Forums, he's the guy that built the xbox360 and ps3 laptops, lots of stuff on there from folks about how to form/mold/cast the laptop's case, hinges, etc. It will give you an idea of what kinds of work is involved if you are looking to scratch-build a laptop or re-case an existing one. It is certainly do-able it will however not be something you do in one weekend so I hope you have lots of time and patience. :D
