Has anybody spray painted a vinyl laptop skin before? I was originally going to make a custom skin out of leather contact paper, but my dad couldn't find any in India, where stuff is very cheap.

However, he did find some cheap standard laptop skins (about $4 for a 17" skin.) My dad bought 2. One for the lid, and one for the palmrests.

Now the problem is that they look very garish. They are pictures of a red corvette. I'm not too big on cars, so I'd like to just paint it solid black and put it on my laptop. Would it work? my dad was saying that the paint wouldn't stick to the vinyl.

Vinyl is a very smooth surface, so you may need to sand the surface in order to increase the surface area, and the chances that the paint will stick.

Ahh ok. Would the paint peel or flake if I didn't put a clearcoat on it?

Home Depot sells PVC paint to refurb lawn furniture. If that won't spray over and stick to vinyl, nothing will. good luck... :)

Have you even read any of the threads in this forum?

Also, why not just paint the laptop itself?

Paranoia. If some hardware goes bad, and I have to send it in, they might reject it saying that it died when I modified the computer.

quick note, the PVC paint works well on vinyl if you sand it lightly, tried it last night

If your going to paint vinyl, then use vinyl paint. I recently painted my lap-desk, which has vinyl on top, wood trim around the edges, and vinyl covered bean-bag filled bottom.

Went to the local "Automotive" paint store and bought one can of satin black vinyl paint for about $7.00. Looks great .

BTW, "DO NOT" sand vinyl ! I did scuff up the wood trim with a scotch brite. Just make sure its clean ! I cleaned mine with rubbing alcohol before painting !
