hey guys .. im new here so excuse me if i posted this in the wrong place ...

i have a dell xps m-1710 and i currently have a 7900 GS in it .. the best g card dell lets you get is a 7950 GTX .. which is just pointless to get at this time since its so old .. i wanted to know if i can change the graphics card in my lap top to something like a 8800 or something like the newer lap tops have ..

i understand my battery wasnt made for this extra power consumption but my power cord can handle it ..

i figured that if maybe i transfer my current GPU heat sink on to the new GPU it might work .. can any 1 confirm this ??? ....

and if there might be moding involved in this please tell =] .. i would really rather save money on a new gaming lap top and just upgrade this 1 =]

EDIT : ok so i just opened up my lap top and took some pics .. there kinda blurry but taking the lap top apart again is a pain in the if you et me =] ...

here are the pics i got ... from what i seen on other threads it dont look like MXM but at the same time its removable .. so im verry confused about this

Is your laptop MXM compatible? If not, it is very unlikely that you can upgrade its GPU.

no that is not mxm and you can only get a replacement from dell for that system. so if dell offered a higher card for that model then you may be able to order that but you can not get a normal mxm card i will not fit

    You're just out of luck.
Pretty positive the 7950GTX is the best card for that series of laptop.

you could also experiment with the Quadro FX3600M from a Precision M6300, which is basically somewhere between an 8800M GTS and a GTX. I've heard someone got it to work in their M1710, but they had no backlighting on their screen. I think an inverter swap may solve this.

Hmmm i been looking at that Quadro card you mentioned .. i like it verry much .. dirext x 10 .. shader model 4.0 instead of my 2.0 .. open GL 2.1 .. verry nice .. i can play games and photo shop and generate 3D .. verry nice .. are you sure this will work on my m 1710 .. because the pics i saw of it made it look like MXM campatible

do you know where i can find this person that put this card in his lap top ??? and hoe much does that card go for ?

The 7950GTX is the most powerful card sold for your system.
Your laptop does not have MXM, it has a proprietary DELL connection between the graphics card and the motherboard.

The XPS1710 power adaptor is 150 watts. The 7950GTx taking 90 watts from that. CPU takes 34 watts, and add up everything else, your power budget cannot support a graphics card more than 90 watts.

well then cant i buy the m 1730 power adapter since its got a much higher power bandwidth ?? and lets say i do go for the 7950 GTX .. its an old card .. but does it still have the power to play the newer games ?? i have a 1920 x 1200 ress on this lap top but im planing on switching it to a 1440 x 900 ress if i can

Yeah it will play all the recent games but its shader performance won't be stellar so you will have to turn those settings down. Should certainly pull the frames at 1440x900 reso. Or you can take a risk an try to upgrade :p

The 7950 GTX should still outperform any of Nvidia's 128-bit cards.

    greetings to all!

just like stuna, i am a newbie here and im having a hard time to look where should i post my question. i just hope you could accommodate me here since my concern is somehow about my gpu.

    i have an alienware m5550i r3, specs: intel core2duo 2.33ghz, nvidia geforce go 7600 256mb video card[/B], 2gb ddr2 memory, 100gb hdd, 15.4" lcd.
i recently fried my video card and since i am from the philippines, having it serviced by alienware is far fetched. i tried looking at nvidia site for where i can buy a replacement, i ended up being referred to laptop brands that use the same video card. from that referral i ended up with an idea that dell, hp, acer, toshiba and my laptop has the same video card.

now, my question is that can i install an nvidia geforce go 7600 video card from another laptop brand (e.g. hp dv9000t) to my m5550? they have the same specs and i also checked the images, they are exactly the same. im just worried that they might have different pre settings which i cannot resolve when i use it to my unit.

hoping that anyone can enlighten and advice me with my concern.

much appreciation to all! mabuhay from the phiippines. :)

Whats the possibility of an adapter to allow MXMs to it in proprietary slots?

It would have to be really discrete to fit, but surely its possible.

Which part is the same? Do you mean the nvidia geforce go 7600 part is the same?

The GPU core is the same model, however the GPU board (if there is one; often it is integrated into the motherboard and non-removable) which contains the GPU core is likely not the same. Also, the GPU core itself is not really serviceable unless you perhaps have machine precision with soldering.

Nah, it's not quite that simple. I don't think any adapter could make the change, you'd have to see the wide difference between the cards to understand.

Additionally, the BIOS wouldn't support the card you put in anyway, so it would be pointless.

proprietary means that DELL doesn't want to adopt MXM on propose to make the consumer pay more money and buy everything from them.
If there was any possibility of making it work you would see many topics in here about it.
They want you to buy a new notebook. They will make much more profit then just selling mxm cards.
