(Edit, NEW PICTURES BELOW)
ok i created a thread before saying that i bought cf vinyl, but it turns out it was the wrong kind. it was the vinyl for vehicle upholstery![]()
but this time i got the right one! i spoke to the rep!!
i got it at DecalFX.com, i got the flexible carbon fiber vinyl.
ill post a vid when i apply it to my notebook
just hope it gets here soon!
they only use usps, and they are extremely slow![]()
-
goodluck on your nb mod project!
has anyone used the vinyls sold in eBay? are they of good quality? -
i have never really bought anything off ebay before, so i would not really know.
but damn USPS ships so slow. they don't even update their tracking system. its been "Acceptance" for the past three days!" i would have been done wrapping my carbon fiber by now! -
okay, i messed up so ****ing bad this time!!11 so pissed
the palm rest and the touch pad were easy, but when i tried to apply the carbon fiber vinyl to the lid, i would get air bubbles, and i cant get them out even with a squeegee, and when i tried to reapply it the color would fade because of the squeegee. crap, now i gotta buy more vinyl for the lid. damn. well anyone got any ideas on how to get it just perfect without ****ing air bubbles. the carbon fiber i got was a sticker, it wasnt the one with paper on both sides, only backing paper so it was very difficult. i was applying it to the lid which was 15in X 7.5in
so how do you do it? -
Treat it like any large backed adhesive, if it has a backing then leave the it on.
Cut off a tiny piece on 1 corner and stick that. Then peel back about 1/2" down the adjacent edge and get it placed and stick the next corner. From there very slowly peel and stick, stopping bubbles as they appear. It is vital that the placement is dead on from the first stick or the whole thing will be off. -
but im just going to get black for the lid because i messed up on the carbon fiber lid vinyl. but the palm rest look cool and the mouse, also i even did the touchpad. but i was watching an installation video and they just took the whole thing off the backing and stuck it on, thats what i did and i messed up. i will post pics in a second
-
ok heres the good pics of the mod the non-messed up part!
then heres the bad side, the ****ed-up part!
im going to redo this ^ part -
I use to lay vinyl for a living, peel back about 1 inch and stick it on, and make absolutely sure it's on square. If your worried start with a piece of vinyl larger than the cover and trim it down afterwards. next you want a mixture of Distilled water and window tint application fluid. You can find the application fluid anywhere that sells window tint. While your there also pick up a cheap squeegee. Ok back to the vinyl, now that you have it tacked on to the lid flip it so the tacky side is up and remove the paper, now you can chose to spray the lid or vinyl or both. I suggest both if you have little or no experience it's the most forgiving way of doing it. Now starting from the tacked down area gently lay it down on the lid, not all at once, but work your way from where it's tacked to the opposite side. Once you do that quickly squeegee out any bubbles, the application fluid will keep the vinyl from sticking so the bubbles will come right out, squeegee hard enough to pull out the fluid as well then all you need to do is let it set and dry. If the squeegee is damaging the design of the vinyl use some low tack masking tape to cover the whole design before you start the masking tape will act as a protector for a printed design, and it peels off easily and if it gives you any trouble just wet it with a few squirts of the same solution you used on the vinyl it will release the tape because it can soak through the paper side of the tape and it will be safe on the vinyl. I hope this made sense, it's a lot easier than it sounds but it's hard to describe and easy to show. If I planned on putting vinyl on my pc I'd show you but I don't plan on it any time soon. If your confused email me at [email protected]
P.S. this is best done with the lid removed from the computer -
well currently my notebook is still under warranty, which is why i chose vinyl over paint, and i dont feel like opening up my lcd. but on the other hand, how would you stop the liquid from seeping through the "joints" and getting in the computer?
-
and here is what i did with the small amount of carbon fiber left
-
LOL, love the camera and mike
Almost there so I say go ahead and go for more CF instead of black.
Sorry about the lid but the rest looks great. I would highly recommend against the water tho, if you go slow and easy you should be OK without the water. Liquid and notebooks don't mix, and yes I know from experience (long island iced tea into my averatec$70 later for a new keyb
)

what if i use a damp cloth and wipe across the area im applying at a time? or what if i cut the vinyl in strips or 3 sections, so there would be a two sides and a middle, would it be noticeable if i did that?
for those who had tried it?
oh yeah, and i was going pretty slow with it, pealing it along the screen slowly but the bubbles still show up. the only thing i hate about getting more is that i have to wait a while to get it, because decalfx.com only uses usps as shipping, and they are really really slow!!! -
something i've done with decals and window clings is to get a pin and make a tiny hole in the bubble, then push the air out and seal it flat. i don't know if this hole would show for same reason with vinyl, since i've never worked with it.
just my 2 cents -
well i just reordered some carbon fiber, it should be here in a week. damn u usps!
-
but for the lid i prolly wont use carbon fiber, because im already getting this free vinyl from a friend. heres the design
-
how does your touchpad work with the vinyl on it?
-
it works great! i mean it doeent lag or anything. it controls it the same way before the vinyl.
-
Dynomite!!
-
Did you disassemble your laptop to hide the edges?
ok, this time i got the right carbon fiber vinyl!!!!!!! :)
