i was thinking people do this to cars and car sound systems and its not that hard. My boy made a custom box for a sound system and sold it for 300$ it was his 1st time ever messin with carbon fiber. All you would have to do is make a mold of your case and then follow directions on how to apply it.It would reduce the weight of you laptop and could lead to some ideas.i think i going to try this on an old laptop then get back to you.Tell me what you think...Also it will increase your wifi signal

That's definitely an interesting idea. If you manage to get it working with an old laptop chassis, post it here, I'd like to see that.

Sounds fun, about a year ago my wife made a maple ( wood ) case for her now dead thinkpad, it certantly sounds interesting and mold making isnt that hard anymore

A box with two holes is much easier than a intricate laptop body. I can see a mold made to put a carbon fiber shell on there but it seems like it would be incredibly hard to make the entire body out of it. Lots of small specific things on the inside of the body in most cases.
Not saying it cant be done, but that I think there is more too it than meets the eye. -
Yes it would not be a project for the faint of heart or the extremly busy, but for mold making you can use a home built CNC and have it carve your mold pieces for you .... kind of a 2 in one project, prototyping AND case building

Carbon fiber is very hard to lay and achieve any strength and not have bubbles. Strong carbon fiber molds require commercial presses. Vacuum bagging is much cheaper, but its difficult to get a good result. A lot of "carbon fiber" mods are just for show and use some kind of applique. But if you are set on a composite, you don't have to use carbon fiber. Fiber glass is very inexpensive. Kevlar epoxy is very strong.

if it were that easy and cost effective a LOT more companies would be doing it.

the lambo and ferrari laptops are both made with carbon fibre. you can buy carbon fibre in sheets, then stick them to the laptop like a vinyl (it is actual carbon fibre though, so it doesnt look crap). if i could cut neatly enough, id do that to the back of my laptop, its just i have a history of doing hash jobs.

I have no need for carbon fibre, I prefer Stainless steel with lots of EBM Papst's
Interesting idea, You can probably make a good model if you coat your laptop shell with oil or something, and than cover it in plaster of paris to make a mold, and than when it is dry cut your laptop out and you can try making it as a mold from their.
