hello everyone ,
so im working on my final year school project about planned obsolescence, my idea for the practical part of my project , is to mod the cooling system of an old hp dv7-4182, , the dv7 series is known to overheat , and i need some advices.
so this laptop idles at 70 & about 90 in load after repaste ( used ekwb ectotherm performance similar to noctua paste) , i've fixed tons of laptop, the issues is not bad repaste , so the idea is to make it more durable , and easily cleanable, i had some different ideas:
-add little heatsinks on vrms or other chips like wifi one
-replace battery by double capacity battery ( double the size & elevate the laptop also)
-replace wifi card by AC wifi compatible ( and to make it compatible with windows 10 , cause the drivers installed from windows 10 with the original card doesnt work properly )
-demciflex magnetic filter on all the intakes to clean it easily
-rubber feet to elevate it
-take out dvd drive & extend the cooling heatpipe assembly ( flat copper heatpipe from ebay )+ cut copper fins (taken out from used laptop heatpipe heatsink assembly) with a pwm fan & control via knob through cheap chinese pwm controller & power it from s-ata dvd drive port
-add copper shims under gpu & cpu to see if any better temps ( ( what do u guys recommend to insulate the surroundings of the cpu & gpu chips ? liquid electrical tape like starbrite/plastidip or just regular tape ? i heard about people using nail polish)
-change paste to thermalgrizzly conductonaut

i was thinking about using artic silver thermal adhesive , but i see on various sites and forum that i can do my own , mixing part of epoxy glue & hardener with thermal paste , would it work with conductonaut also since this paste is all metal ? it would be then better than AS thermal adhesive
did anyone ever tried mixing epoxy with mettalic thermal pastes to make thermal glue ? i heard people dabbed epoxy in corners & used paste in the center too instead of mixing them to glue the parts , what would u guyz recommend
my goal is to achieve -30% / - 40% temperature in load let me know what you think about my ideas , and give me suggestions![]()

whats the best way to insulate the surroundings of where i apply conductonaut ?
liquid electrical tape ? standard high temp electrical tape ? or simply just smear standard thermal paste where i need to insulate ? -

thanks for your input , it could be another possibility , but why its better than using thermal paste that i already have , liquid electric tape or just super 33 + electrical tape

Some other thoughts.
Coating heat generating chips and other components may interfere with heat dissipation if they are uncooled, e.g. PCH
To "projectify" it a bit perhaps you could measure the gap between CPU/GPU and heatsink and investigate ways to make it level (have the die and heatsink surfaces parallel) and how to modify the mounting pressure if it is uneven.
I have some shims coming to test on my P170EM, it has a terrible visibly concave heatsink, I will see if a thin shim can help. Since I applied Conductonaut it has a constant 10-15C difference between cores 0 and 1 that it didn't have with paste. The temp drop on the other 3 cores is in excess of 25C...
Also you can mention how the i7-3720QM in that 4 CPU generation, near 5 year old P170EM with a custom bios raising power limits and turbo bins and a few bucks of liquid metal can still outperform the equivalent priced chip ($378) of the previous 6700HQ generation and probably match it with the current 7700HQ! -

thank u for ur input , do u know how many degrees lower than stock this kind of mod can achieve ?
i want achieve 30-40pc less deg if possible , dunno if only that option can lower that much ( but its the most effective of all so , im gonna focus on that one more than the others) -

@mayantronixx if CPU idles at 70, there is definitely something wrong with your current setup, no way around it. If contact between CPU and heatsink is good, most likely heatsink pipe went bad - or was right from the start, consider replacing it instead of wasting your time on fiddling with the dinosaur.

the hp guy just answers , there is not danger lelyes if i dont mind frying my cpu from being to close to T junction all the time after 3 years

can i use this kind of controller to adjust pwm fan speed on my 5V 0.5A future additional fan without risking of frying anything ?
im noob with electricity, the controller is 1A , does this mean that i dont have to turn the knob to max ? or it will adjust to my fan's amperage ?

i intent to connect pwm controller & pwm fan to my internal mini sata port
i'm using usb to mini sata to test the PWM fan controlling thing without risking to fry anything on my laptop at first ( test on usb hub not connected to any pc)

did anyone ever try insulating surrounding of die-radiator with non conductive thermal paste when using conductive metallic thermal paste ?
i intend to use high viscosity thermal paste like k5pro ( very good btw to replace thermal pads better quality ratio than fuji poly) / cheap thermal pads to insulate the surrounding of the chips , but i dont know if its safe ? maybe if metal paste bleeds & melts through the highviscosity thermal paste it will f:k up my sh;t
was maybe thinking about recreating my theory of making bleed high temp metal paste & see if it melts through a layer of hard thermal paste -
