So I've been checking out the other thread with increasing horror.
Now, consider me a boring old fart but to me, flashy means something which doesn't advertise the fact that you're mentally 12 and painfully nerd.
I have to cast a vote for the Adamo thirteen - and having come across an Onyx after having owned the Pearl, I'd have to go with the Pearl despite my misgivings about picking it when I owned it.
It's not simply homogenously and inoffensively agreeable like most of Apple's wares, with a more industrial and markedly individual theme - and it is definitely flashy and catches the eye, but not in a comedy manner.
I've been seeing Dell dilute this aesthetic to take it to lower price points which is obviously a smart thing given most of their market, but I really hope they also carry it on further and develop the look more at similar pricepoints. I believe the engineering needs to improve but in terms of the styling, I think they did a fantastic job.
Let's have your submissions. My guess is that, sadly, this will be a shorter thread than the other 'name your biggest carbuncle' thread - but I figured it might lead to some discussion about where design (as opposed to 'let's slap LED's and flames on it') could go in terms of premium notebooks.
Apple have definitely proven that design can sell at a premium (as long as it's not too premium), but most of the other players who're introducing design into the mix seem to be getting something wrong - be it bad/poor marketing, getting the spec wrong for the market, getting the price point wrong, or calling a total mess 'designed', etc. I'd like to see more PC makers getting the formula right and broadening the choice for those who want technological desiderata - indeed, desiderata by any yardstick - which actually runs Windows properly, unlike the aforementioned company's wares.

Uh, HP 8730w?

I agree with you Vogelbung, I dislike the "Look at me" notebooks.
I prefer something more, I won't say industrial, but understated. I tend to prefer small ultra lightweights with high build quality. For me, that category is pretty much ruled by Sony and since the beginning pretty much. People see my SZ and are shocked at what it is capable of for such a small size and weight, and it looks nice too. I can't tell you how many customers see it and are just amazed by it.
The new Sony Z is awesome, and honestly the only thing I could see as a replacement for my SZ. The old Z wasn't a big enough jump.
For me though, the company on the right track is Asus. The UX series is fantastic for the money. So it doesn't have an I series processor, or the premium screen, but, for the money, they made a thin, lightweight notebook with fantastic battery life. It's not perfect, but you get a lot for what you are spending compared to anything in it's price range.
I wonder what Asus could make of this if they did offer a more premium version. Say for $1000 put an SSD, higher quality screen, maybe an I3 or I5, it would be a monster success I think. -
Advent 6555, completely plain design however very sleek looking with the coolest touch pad board over
-
Asus does right--but not with their G series laptops.
I would like Asus to one-up the M11x by taking the U30Jc and modifying it to handle a GT 335M and Optimus... -
What, your telling me a Gold Macbook isn't flashy? Tsk, tsk, tsk.

i like the look of the precision m4400. the lid was just great, and impossible to bend diagonally or otherwise.
the whole design reminds me of a few solid sheets of technology just pressed together to make up that perfect thickness youd expect in a 15", as opposed to some sort of a thin plastic box with rounded corners.
maybe i just liked the feeling that if some tried to steal it from me i could just hit them with it and knock them unconscious. -
What is a carbuncle?

I'm going to throw in my vote for ASUS, as well. Their machines are sleek and just a little flashy, while remaining professional rather than gaudy. I also have to say I'm actually a huge fan of ThinkPad design, as well. They aren't flashy or sleek in the slightest, but nothing says "professional and understated" like a ThinkPad.

Wow! Who knew moderators were so rude?
Maybe if you actually look at those definitions, none of them really fit very well, hence my question, smart guy. Is he looking for a flashy notebook that doesn't look like a cabochon cut gemstone or subcutaneous tissue inflammation? Is that the way people actually speak in "Rule, Britannia!" or what is he talking about? I just wanted a little clarification and maybe translation into real English. -
Actually my logic fits yours. If the OP had used the word Classiest notebook you've seen it would have been less confusing but I expect no less from a cat wearing a bowl on it's head with a sourpuss face LOL.
Flashy= flamboyant in my book. If you want a notebook version of Lady Gaga then that's flashy i.e. Alienware etc. If you want a notebook that's different but classy then buy an Adamo, Vostro V13, L13 or MBP. -
I apologize for being rude, it's just one of those pet peeves of mine, when 2 minutes of Googling can clear things up easier than posting a question. -
Well, if you're looking for something thats not to flashy, and would look at home in a business meeting, check this out.

Carbuncular.

Those ThinkPads had the best keyboards. I miss my ThinkPad 380ED.
-
These are the notebooks that i think look nice
Old gen MBP
Old gen Dell adamo in pearl white
The HP Envy 13" wasn't bad either.
Sony TT in white. I know Vogelbung's not a fan at all of the TT lol but i think the design was more modern. I posted some pictures here. I never owned one but i liked the TZ in white as well but it was slightly spoiled by the black battery.
Sony X series is probably the best looking laptop out now in my opinion.
Asus used to make quite nice looking ultraportables but they've stopped this. -
See, it's cuz you didn't have a TZ that you think the TT is fine
-
May be, but i've seen the black TZ and used it and i wasn't that impressed.
I feel the TT design is more current and the two colour combo gives it a bit of a lift. -
-
I may have mentioned this before but i'm not that keen on all black laptops. After a while i can find them boring.
Still though the X is a great design but if i was to buy one i would get the gold one. -
HP DM3 is pretty minimalistic and nice looking, in my opinion. Especially for a consumer notebook.
The Thinkpad, however, is by far the best looking professional notebook out there. -
Lenovo Ideapad Y650 and Dell's business notebook line. Even the Vostro, though it may not have the greatest build quality, has a nice looking design.
-
I've never 'got' Thinkpads. They're engineered for sure, but designed?
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
"engineered"? how can you possibly say that. thinkpads are obviously "concocted"
whereas macbooks are obviously "contrived", hps schemed, and none of them designed or engineered in the slightest
sorry for the sarcasm. i was just a bit frightened that this thread was going to turn into a paradox of defining the words we are using to define things.
whats the word for that again, platonic? plenoptic? -
-
I still think the Gold MBP I posted in the other version of this thread is teh most flashiest nawtbuk eva.

What could say "understated" any more than this?
