Why is the touchpad placed to the left on some laptops (even when the keyboard is centered)? Has it to do with ergonomics, the angle of your arm as it rests on the table?

The touchpad is usually centered with the spacebar on your keyboard. 17 inches laptop with a numerical pad nest to the keyboard will find their touchpad to the left to keep it centered with the spacebar.

Well it really depends on the manufacturer, actually. For instance, on the HP (HDX for example) the touchpad is centered with the spacebar. But on like a Clevo (my computer) the touchpad is not really centered with the spacebar; nor is it right in the center of the "palmrest". On my computer, it's sorta centered between the spacebar, the right alt, and the right click key (one next to the alt) - it's weird, but you get used to it. Very quickly, at that.

My vostro 1500 is actually centered about 1/2" left of center from the keyboard. I think it makes it easier to type and not hit the touch pad though.
Touchpad to the left.
