few months ago I made a post here about my palmrest discoloring.... well now its beginning to rust as well. I called dell and they are sending a technician on site to replace the palmrest.

What I am curious about is whether or not the onsite guys are actually dell employees with experience on XPS or if its like a 3rd party company who can potential screw things up more from lack of experience.

the other question is does anyone know or recommend skins or something I can put on the palm rest to prevent discoloration again in the future?

Hey there! sorry's about yor palmrest...Well, Dell is sending someone to replace onsite for you! ;) A good thing!

The Onsite Technicians are not direct employees of Dell...They are actually (like you mentioned) 3rd party employees.

I had to have some work done on my 1530 a few months ago...The 3rd party technician who came out to fix my 1530, fixed it just fine. He was nice, courteous and knew what he was doing. He also stated he like working on the XPS line, and that they get continual training from Dell when the newest models are released. He was also very experienced in working on notebooks! :)

So, I don't think you need to worry about it, I'm sure it will all work out fine for you! ;) :)

As for the skins...I am going to let someone else answer that.

Heres to it all working out for yah! ;) :)

    Hope that helps,

    Cin ;) :)

i use bestskinsever to protect the outside of my laptop and wristpad..

though this might not be the best idea, because the wristpad = aluminium = kind of a heatsink....

dont really care... 4 yr warranty, if it dies, too bad

its not rusting, but fading... which is kinda odd for it....

some people say that rubbing it with water/alcohol makes the fading disappear, but it will appear after some time (apple macbook pro, m1330, m1530....)

I actually was looking at doing the same thing on my old compaq. The dang paint wore off after two friggin weeks. I ended up getting rid of it before I could put my plan into action, but heres my idea. Go down to your local graphics/sign shop and have them cut out a piece of vinyl sticker like they use for graphic wraps and truck lettering and such. If you get a matching color, and get it installed correctly, it could end up looking very nice.

I bought these custom cut ones from eBay, it's very good. The seller didn't post any new listing for them, but you can still try to contact him to see if he still has more materials left.

EDIT: The material used by the seller I bought from looks very similar to what Thisisme posted.
