Heh. Be thankful you don't have your GPU under your keyboard, like I do.

Anyway, wouldn't that just cause the heat to stay within the hard drive enclosure, and insulate it, causing it to be hotter and get to a dangerous temperature?

I dont think its a good idea if your laptop is so hot that you feel uncomfortable to keep your hands on it to SEAL that heat into your system.

Just like the keyboard the palm area may be releasing a lot of heat into the outside air, seal it in and let you system cook.

Plus that mod wont be as easy to do on every different kind of laptop out there. In the case given its the hard drive he is sealing up the heat on and thats actually one of the most heat sensitive parts of your system... nice cool hands traded for data corruption or total drive failure? Not a good trade IMO.

Now if your into moding you could do a reverse Vicious mod :D find a few areas on the palm area you never rest your hands and dremel out some air vent holes and then cover them with some mesh.

For the average person though that doesnt like to do hardcore mods I would go spend $5 on one of those mini fans and point it at your palm rest area, this will keep your hands cool and dry and help the system stay cool as well.

You may also just get a normal cooling pad, it may cool down the internal temps enough to take away a lot of the heat from the palm area.

I just grab anything around me that's about an inch thick and stable - usually a paperback I'm reading or a folder newspaper - and stick it under the back end of the laptop so that the whole thing is inclined. Increases airflow dramatically and everything cools ways down. Similar to a cooling pad, only there's actually a bigger gap between the bottom of the laptop and the desk and you don't have to bother with the extra noise the fans make.

    *edit*
this assumes you have vents on the bottom of your laptop. IIRC, the prettier the laptop (I'm looking at your MacBookPro), the less likely you'll have bottom vents.

    nope, its only macbook pros.
    ...and there are prettier laptops.

in the feature, laptops will be made out of a very strange synthetic material that is incredibly lightweight and spreads and dissipates heat as well as copper.

they will be designed with all the heat in mind clustered away from the parts people touch like the back and the entire area will be a three dimensional tessellating fractal organism that grows and latches on to cooler organisms

ok. im not thinking about laptop cooling for another few weeks now.

The ssd in my laptop is a lot hotter than the hard drive i used to have, and it doesn't have a thermal sensor to boot. Samsung really sucks.

Anyone have a GOOD cooling solution?

The palm rest heat is due to the hard drives, not the cpu.
